Great video! I’m 70 years old and discovered Jordan about five years ago. “Cleaning up my room’ is an apt metaphor for us at any stage of our lives. When we start with the small things, then we can eventually tackle the big things with a better grasp of how to handle them. Three cheers for Jordan! Also, I just started learning Mandarin and am enjoying your views on China. It took me decades of ‘cleaning my room’ with various European languages. Now, I’m ready for the Middle Kingdom.

Re your comment - "When we start with the small things, then we can eventually tackle the big things with a better grasp of how to handle them@ - Looking @ that from a scientific viewpoint, the universe we live in is a NON linear process i.e. small causes lead to LARGE effects. Furthermore, given that the state of THE HUMAN CONDITION is so TOXIC, far too often, those effects/results can be catastrophic ! So, if we have the good sense to wish to prevent them, then we should pay a LOT more attention to small details ! - Works for me! :)

It took me too long to realize that asking what is the meaning of life was the wrong question. Life _is_ meaning. Life is what gives us meaning. And now the chief problem I see is that there are a great many people out there doing their damnedest to prevent other people from living. They want others to exist, but not to live - not to _enjoy_ life - and they will do everything in their power to prevent it. Ironically, for a certain type of religious zealot preventing others from enjoying life seems to be what gives them meaning and enjoyment.

@@alanlight7740 Life is too hard this days for common men to reflects and examines ones life, most people go through life like preprogrammed robot just trying to survive or be successful. I often think about the Actors, I use to envy them, getting all the love, praise and adoration, getting all those by acting and pretending, some even turn into their character in real life, I would feel hollow inside if that was my profession. It must be extremely hard on their psyche, which is why many of them struggle to have a fulfilling and happy life inspite of all the fame.

When you are Chinese you really don't need J. Peterson really. My father(*) taught me Chinese philosophical life skills which form the basic foundation I need during my younger teenage years and as I grow older I gather/learn the rest of my life skills from the community I live in. * I live with my Chinese father and parents who taught me many things. Most Chinese families that I know operate this way, a tightly coupled system, unlike the western family.

I don’t get what you mean. Being Chinese ( presumably frim our rich history and a lot of potential past mentors) should prevent us from benefiting from tge wisdom of others? I m a full middle aged Chinese mother of 4 young adults and i myself benefited much from the good professor. I hope my children would develop critical thinking and be open to peruse and understand different schools of thought so that they can determine is their personal views holds water. Have a good day ☺️

@@etc6615 Each person experience is different. My guess is that You are more or less very much of a Liberal in upbringing you will get many benefits from the prof's teachings or ideas because his teachings strike a chord with what you are brought up with. There are many Liberal ideas I DON'T like too many to elaborate here. For myself my upbringing is very much Confucian in nature, and I pass them on to my children as well. I do very appreciate it cos I believe it still very much applicable today. Having said that I agree with you that young people need more critical thinking to strive in today's world which is constantly changing. Alas, many parents don't teach their children much anymore they leave it to the society and teachers to teach them, to me many of these ideas are wrong and inappropriate.

My ex-partner was Chinese. She was highly highly dysfunctional and destructive in her inter-personal relations. She had been badly bent out of shape by her family, and I had sympathy for her. She did not have a nourishing and healthy environment as a child, and she was severely damaged psychologically. For example, she would fly into a rage and scream and yell over the most trivial things. I remember having to get the children out of the house and take them away because she was screaming at her mother. This was because there was some detergent bubbles left on some dishes after washing. I could hear her screaming from outside and 80 metres down the street from my house. These types of incidents occurred almost daily! Many Chinese Families are not functional below the surface presentation level! (As are many western families too I might add). There is an urgent need for mentors like Jordan Peterson!

Love Jordan Peterson, his ideas, lectures, and podcasts have drastically helped my life as well as others around me. I’m only at the start of where this leads. Helped me in my mindset, having more order in my life and house, trying to be consistent and conscious with my words, my spiritual journey was rekindled and I started looking at the Bible in a much more real and genuine way, physical fitness has improved, and the list could really, really, really go on. All of these things have spread to those around me in very clear ways and in a shorter time then I otherwise would have thought. Mr Peterson, my gratitude is ongoing, I don’t think I’ll ever forget you sir.

Very good summarization of the good effect a healthy mindset can have on your life. Glad to hear you turned your life around and are pursuing your passions. The "Clean your own room" advice is more relevant than many people think. To put it simple: If we can't even keep our own room clean and tidy, how on earth are we going to be able to handle bigger things in life? A chaotic room means we lack discipline, without discipline we are not suited to make big changes that affect other people.

Hi Siming, I read JP's book 12 Rules for Life in 2019, it help me in fighting off my depression, and at the time I was a huge fan. The book had a couple of things that I didn't agree with, especially with how he views women and men, the silly idea that men are the agent of order and women are the agent of chaos. but overall I had a positive take on him. I used to think of him as this "great Western intellectual" who is ready to dive deep and question his own beliefs and was ready to renew the own ideas that he inherited from his culture and religion. I am Palestinian, and one of the defining moments with JP with me was when he was asked about the issue of Israel/Palestine. and he gave the most mombo jumbo answer I ever heard in my life. It was the first time I saw him truly speaking out of absolute ignorance in a matter. btw, I am used to seeing Westerns having a pro-Israel position. So it wasn't the end of the world, but it was the moment where I really started to not trust him as a person who does his research. Then came the issue of climate change, an issue that I think has nothing to do with ideology or religious influence, or West vs East. A purely scientific issue, climate change is happening. again, I am from the middle east, and as a society, the last thing we think about is climate change, we have poverty and wars all over, but everyone knows it's happening and it needs to stop. I was shocked that JP's take on climate change was that it's natural. that made me question his scientific integrity. And then with time, It became clear to me that all his takes (Islam, LGBT+, Climate Change, Feminism ... etc) are coming from a right-wing Christian religious place. I was completely fooled by his tactic of never answering a question directly (word salad). And all the self-help stuff that he "helped me with" are in every self-help book out there. Siming, what brought me to your channel is that I am amazed and fascinated by what China has become and I wanted to look for sources to cut through the Western propaganda against it. I am no intellectual giant or anything but doesn't take a genius to know that to start having an opinion about something, one must look for the other side's point of view. JP's take on China is not only ignorant and incorrect, but it is so hateful, where does all this hate come from? have you seen the shit he posted about China lately? Anyways I am sorry for this long answer but I just had to get this off my chest. Love your channel.

For me and I presume for most human beings it will take a lifetime to reach the level you have reached in your youth but remember when increasing your insight you also increse your suffering. Those who avoid thinking are happier than those who look for answers. When I am told that I think too much my natural answer is that this is my "destiny". If I stop thinking I will die.

Excellent video, as always. Enjoyable and, well, relateable. Those who deprecate Dr. Peterson's personal advice (per Olivia Wilde) or his political positions tend to forget that they both come from the same perspective: That through hard work and careful thought, we can achieve great and good things. Everyone at one point or another needs a 'leg up' - some objective and often 'tough love' instruction from someone we trust. That would be Dr. Peterson. As he himself would surely say, however, 'do not put your full faith in anyone. Try it yourself. If it works, fine. If not, examine why not.' For millions of people, it appears to be working!

Comparing yourself to the person you were yesterday is way more better than comparing yourself to another person. Also, living your life according to someone's opinion or idea is so toxic in the long term. Very good video Siming.

I love that you said take the piss. You are very powerful, a real force. To think about where you have come from and where you have landed, it’s remarkable.

I like you! I value people who are honest and tell directly what they feel, and I get such a vibe from you. I also know J. Peterson, the ideas he spreads are very deep and enlightening. He also changed my life. In a way I subconsciously felt similar in many areas of my life when hearing his lectures. He gave me the language to bring those ideas into shape that can be communicated. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Siming for your thoughtful reflection on the usefulness of Jordan Peterson's ideas in your life experience. I'm happy to hear it has helped you. I also find his advice and perspective amazingly well informed, realistic and useful. Not just some academic fluff that doesn't help in real life. Jordan's detractors trivialize much of his advice, but that's just because they have small minds that want to insult more than they want to understand.

Perhaps the biggest challenge after reading 12 Rules is to remember and really embody them. I have made some great strides in my life, but my room continues to be a sty -- for example. I still compare myself to others; perhaps it is human nature and a personal flaw. It is a bad habit that needs to be shaken and perhaps a complex that I have developed over time.

Currently reading 12 rules for life right now. It's a magnificent book! Your note was from chapter 4 right? I just finished it yesterday :P I've been writing every day for some years too. So helpful.

Wow, when I was watching one of your other videos I was just thinking, "I wonder if she knows Peterson" lol so I was happy to see the title on this video, we're like intellectual siblings 😂 Jordan changed my life too. He really help me through a tough period in my life. Towards the end of 2021 I had a traumatic violent break up and that left me lost and directionless in life. I started to listen to Peterson and it really helped me understand myself better and my position as a man in the world, particularly during this period in history. I think Covid did a lot of damage to many people in terms of mental health. Jordan emerged just at the right time for some of us. I just found your channel and it's really refreshing to hear your nuanced views on various issues. You really are a grounded person, I relate to your content.
