As a left leaning person myself I was on board with a lot of what he was saying until he brought up the virus. Without the lockdown I would've probably died to it. I'm late 20's so have age on my side but I have health conditions that would make me much more vulnerable. Without lockdown I'd have never convinced my employer to let me work from home because my condition is invisible and I didn't get the letter from the NHS to isolate. I don't want to die thank you very much. We live in a world where my death is seen as an acceptable statistic to a lot of people...
@J1mston4 жыл бұрын
@Ru22eLL I say left leaning mainly because of my views on health care and social programs but it would be more accurate to say I'm a centralist. But yeah, there are literally thousands of people like me who have rare (and common) medical conditions that have been managed quite well personally before the virus swept in. The virus changes the game completely and becomes something that is much harder to personally manage independently whilst also having to go into an office daily. My biggest concern is that the virus causes pneumonia which is a big killer of people with my condition, I nearly lost a close family member to it a long time ago. I remember sitting in a meeting with my boss and his boss about a month before the lockdown, people with conditions named by the NHS and PHE were being sent to work from home but because my rare condition (I think anywhere between 1 in 10000 and 1 in 50000 have it) wasn't named I was told I was not allowed to work from home. I tried bargaining and explaining my point and they were not very receptive to me. Thankfully the national lockdown came into play not long after and I've been working from home ever since. I have not seen another person in the flesh since march (barring delivery drivers who I'm extra careful around). I've took this shit very seriously not because someone sent me a letter telling me to do so but because I know my body and I know that if the virus grabbed hold I'd be fucked. My life is on the line when people say let it run through the communities. It feels like my life is an acceptable loss just because of the way I was born. I work hard, pay taxes and do everything a normal person does and more, how many 28 year olds can claim to have worked their way up from a council estate to having a mortgage in a middle class area? When people say let it run through I get massive eugenics vibes, something I thought we were done with decades ago. Let us born weaker die so the strong can live, fuck that.
@tozmom6154 жыл бұрын
@@J1mston At what cost to other people though? If the lockdown saves your life but results in more suicides is that acceptable? When the country cannot afford to pay for your healthcare in five years because its economy tanked is that acceptable? No one who advocates allowing the disease to run its course wants anyone to die. But it’s a balance of risks. I would argue that the problem is that your condition, whatever it is (a name would be helpful), was not on “the list”. Therefore argue for it to be put on the list. I’d support that. I’m assuming it’s something like cystic fibrosis, in which case I, like the rest of society would be happy to have you shield at home. Even if it isnt CF surely a chat with a GP would have made your case for you. I’m a fat hypertensive in his forties. My risk is a bit higher than most my age but I’d be willing to take the risk personally. Having my civil liberties removed in such a massive way to “protect” others is anathema to me and most of the population. Unfortunately as the Great Thomas sowell points out, life has very few “solutions”, all it has are trade offs. Trading off one thing against another. I do not think I have heard anyone who wants the lockdowns to end say that we want to trade off the lives of the sickly against the lives of the non sickly in some Darwinian survival of the fittest- but the trade off is that by destroying the economy we are making EVERYONE sickly. The measured appropriate trade off is to allow the actually fit and healthy to develop immunity, whilst shielding the sickly who wouldn’t survive. I work in health care- I have already lost two patients BECAUSE of Covid. Not OF Covid, but because I’ve not been allowed by management, despite my strongest objections, to treat sick folk who were unfortunate enough to not have Covid-19. Their conditions were allowed to kill them because the nhs has become a national Covid service only.
@J1mston4 жыл бұрын
@@tozmom615 To my knowledge there was never a full specific list of conditions, it was conditions such as; then a small list of the highest risk such as COPD for example. A full list of each individual condition would've been great but would've been too much to create in a short time span and to much to manage, people would still have been missed from it. My condition is Osteogenesis Imperfecta and some with this condition did get shielding letters but not me because I've been self managing the condition mostly other than brief health check ups every 18 months. My condition is such that on the surface I appear healthy but underneath I can attest that I'm not. My GP is also unfamiliar with the condition so won't even put me forward for flu shots even though it's strongly advised. Believe me I'm happy to shield at home but when the guidelines leave me and many others like me in limbo it's simply not possible and I have had to threaten my employer with quitting to keep working from home (which is something not many are in a position to be able to do) which thank god I have because there's been a fair few cases at my work. How things are currently it's a toss up between my life and someone else's life and I'll always choose my own and I will not be guilted into thinking my life is worth less than anyone else's just because I was born differently. Another problem is that even the fit and healthy are being hit hard by the virus as evident by the uptick of hospital admissions. At the start of the pandemic people with disabilities were being sent DNR requests to free up beds and ventilators for other people without and guidelines were drafted to take life saving treatment away people with disabilities to give to normal people. Without lockdown I'd have been forced to work, probably got the virus then told I'll not be treated for it because of the way I was born. I fully admit that lockdown is not ideal but as things are showing a middle ground or perfect solution is hard to find. People are complaining because they're being asked to wear masks so if we can't even do that then I fully support the lockdown.

Jeez. The absolute beaten to death old horse of "Nick Robinson and Andrew Neil... therefore balanced BBC journalism". Robinson is hardly right-wing, and whatever Neil's personal views he is consummately fair. An obligation the 99.9% left BBC journalists feel no need to observe. They see themselves as front line warriors in an existential battle between good and evil, and any requirement of 'balance' as a hamstringing to be ignored or worked around to achieve the great good. What next? "Complaints from both sides, so probably getting the balance about right?" Yawn. And Evans chucked in the tedious, requisite Hopkins Derangement Syndrome. She represents a large section of public opinion, her views are neither fringe nor extreme. Nor is she thick or inarticulate. 'Balance' must include these views being aired and listened to fairly, and by all means examined and rebutted. Intellectually. Not "You're a revolting racist, shut up". That said, Evans makes many excellent and important observations about media bias, mentioning Gramscianism's influence, and the apparatus of woke control. Just, if the best 'our side' of rationality and fairness has is this level of equivocation and urge to immediately find fault on both sides we'll get chewed up and spat out by the monomanical Left; they are obsessive street-fighters who haven't the slightest interest in fair debate. Only crushing opposition, winning, and power. By any means.

The BBC totally obsolete if people want old scheduled programming in can be delivered encrypted from satellite. The old terrestrial broadcast system is unnecessary, there's a waste of resources. The BBC should be funded commercially only, no money from licences or tax.

Simon: Comedians who don't need the ball to be hit back over the net are called talented writers... Anyway, enjoying my first encounter with Simon. He's covering a lot of ground in fine fashion. I'm a Yank--I love the Trig lads because they speak to so many more realms than just the UK. This talk with Simon is delving into some granular stuff about BBC etc. that goes over my head, but that's fine. You must first find out what you don't know, on your path to knowing it.

Witty, intelligent and good humoured. I think perhaps Simon is a stranger to most of us because of that.

The superb Simon Evans, great comedian (I was looking forward to seeing him at the Leicester Square Theatre in November - Covid delayed again!!). He nails the argument every time.

An effective right wing comedian would be one criticizing and making fun of the government, with all its failings and hypocrisy.
@MatchesMalone11834 жыл бұрын
Simon said it more eloquently than I likely will, but with regard to whether comedy should be left wing on the BBC with a conservative government in charge there are a number of problems. Chief among those problems is that what they are producing isn't funny or really even comedy. It's thinly painted activism. It's become completely transparent that they are directed by what they see as morality, as opposed to what is true about a situation, and subsequently what is funny.

I'm so glad to hear someone talk about the economy...both the traditional left and right (european) can form such a strong alliance over this issue. The american left will go nowhere without a class consciousness, and nor will the american right.

I reckon you should consider adding it again. It's good to read many reputable news sources if only to get an idea of what their prejudices and editorial lines are. I read the Guardian even though a lot of it is total nonsense (Marine Hyde, gawd almighty, she's like a Katie Hopkins of the woke, and just as intelligent), I like the Spectator but don't agree with some of the stuff there. One publication I used to read but now do not is the New Statesman, I don't see much value in the stuff they come out with at all.

@@rustyyb8450 The Economist! I hadn't thought of that newspaper for ages. Yes, they are rather good. I used to subscribe for a few years about 15 years ago and had it delivered to my home. I'll check it out again, I always liked it except the fact that you couldn't see who had written specific articles.

(58:00) SIMON: This was most definitely NOT "a terrible, terrible ERROR"! It was deliberate: and it is being done to destroy the United Kingdom. This is why JOHNSON and his coven must not be allowed to simply resume business as usual. They need to be arraigned for 'cruelty to children', 'abuse of elderly people', 'crimes against humanity', AND High Treason.

I like that this interview didn't look at this issue black and white. The BBC has deffo a problem with the whole idpol TV shows and one-sided jokes comedy. Though I never understand why their Brexit coverage is supposed to be anti Brexit. In the BBC they had a) numerous chaps from Stoke-on-Trent who should their stupid Brexit slogans in the camera, b) TV shows where 70% of the people in the audience were Leavers and they c) also reported on some tiny minority of Scottish Brexiteers. Just three examples. You know that on the other side of the spectrum they call it the Brexit Broadcast Center?

It really is bizarre that such an obviously intelligent, entertaining and funny man doesn't get invited onto the usual topical TV shows. Anyway, it was a pleasure to listen to him discuss his thoughts outside of the frame of a comedy show. It seems to me that if Simon is now what's considered "right wing" then the centre must have swung very far to the left. I used consider myself as a bit to the political left but more and more I find myself feeling like the imaginary "centre" has moved so far that I'd now be considered by many on the left to be centre right.

Simon Evans brings a bit of class to right-of-centre comedy, and an example to those that think right-wing comedy is Jim Davidson.
@borderlands66064 жыл бұрын
He's not so much right of centre, as right of what most people would have called communism not so long ago. Simon Evans' statement on Covid is common sense. Respiratory viruses that resulted in pneumonia were called "the old person's friend" by doctors, as they released the very elderly from chronic pain and dementia. Epidemiologically benign years are followed by ones that take a greater number of old folks. That's how things are, and no reason to put the lives of the young and fit into suspended animation. I was surprised to hear the guys say, "..and that's why he's called right wing" for stating the incontrovertible.
