Masterpiece. Very rarely does any cover do justice to the original because it takes the true context of the message and what it meant in that era and changes it.

You caught it, this was the warning, & Disturbed's version is the anger that it seems that no one did. Look at the world when that was recorded, & look at now. SO much could have been prevented. I was a child then, a grandmother now. I'm mad as hell.

"the sounds of silence" refers to the disease of apathy as multitudes of people remain silent as they witness injustice all around them. its in fact, a call to action! its sad how many beloved songs that call for action but go unheeded as apathy and hate continue to litter the landscape of human society. silence can indeed be deafening!
@allanboyer27697 ай бұрын
No, it is about the lack of desire to connect with others. People caught up in their own lives and ignoring the people around them. Just look at people with their faces buried in their cell phones and you will get it. People all around us and we live in our own little worlds, refusing and not wanting to engage with others. You obviously didn't listen to the meaning of the lyrics. Go look up what Art Garfunkel had to say about it.

This was originally an acoustic song and it failed to make a dent in the charts when release in March 1965. Simon & Garfunkel's debut LP (Wednesday Morning, 3 AM) was a commercial flop and the team broke up and they went separate ways. Simon moved to England to pursue a solo career and Garfunkel enrolled into Columbia University in NYC. As noted in a previous comment [Mark Thompson], the original recording was remixed by their producer Tom Wilson (he simply added an electric guitar plus a drum track) and re-released it as a single in September 1965. The remix was done without the knowledge of S&G until after the song was re-released. Due to the success of the 'electric' version - which hit #1 in the US charts by January 1966 - the duo were reunited and quickly recorded an LP to capitalize on their new found success. Such an amazing twist of fate for what ended up being one of the most iconic groups that established the folk-rock era.

One suggestion: when you pause a song, try to back it up a few seconds to maintain the continuity of the song. Something is usually lost if you just stop-start.

Fun fact: in the early 60's Columbia Records put together a folk trio group called The Pilgrims as their answer to Warner Records very popular hit folk trio Peter Paul and Mary. A then little known songwriter working in Tin Pan Alley came to the studio to shop a song that the Pilgrims' producer hoped to include on their debut album. He asked the songwriter to record a demo of the song for the Pilgrims to rehearse, but when he heard the song sung by the songwriter and his buddy he immediately gave them a contract to record it themselves, and the Pilgrims' debut album 'Just Arrived' was released without that song. The songwriter was Paul Simon, his buddy was Art Garfunkel, the song was 'Song Of Silence'. The lead singer of The Pilgrims was a black former soldier, who was also enjoying a successful career as an opera singer, dancer, musical and stage and Broadway actor and concert singer. He later had a very successful career on two hit tv sitcoms, 'Soap' and 'Benson'. His name was Robert Guillaume. P.S. there are KZbin videos of him singing another Simon and Garfunkel hit 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' live.

This is beautiful 🤩 Music seems to have the ability to dissolve time and space so that we are met with feeling and emotion of the writer, the performer no matter the age. I love the deeply personal expressions. Mozart's 'Requiem', Tchaikovsky's '6th symphony', The Beatles 'Abbey road Medley' off 'Abbey road' , 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' by Neil Young, 'Strange Fruit' Billy Holiday . ... I could go on. Joni Mitchell 'a case of you (Blue)' ... perhaps Simon and Garfunkel's 'bridge over troubled water' might make my list .... do try some of these MrsPP 🤩

I'm not one to really get into lyrics - I generally just take the melody and beat and get caught in the music of a song. But this song is possibly the greatest lyrical song ever written. So there really is no point in "covering" this song. The words and the original music are all you need. Disturbed should be put on the dust heap of history.
