Seriously - when there's a major homophobic incident at school not one of his friends stands up, a teacher has to. At least every adult in this movie is very accepting, unlike my own experience. But his friends and every other adolescent were honestly the worst.

I have to say Abby had all the right to be angry at Simon. I understand that he was put in a difficult position being blackmailed but you still shouldn’t be pawning off your friends. I get that it was a very sticky situation but he should’ve told her about the whole situation right after coming out to her. Even if he had good intentions that doesn’t clear him of all the damage he created, she had all the right to be angry at him. Also the reason I feel like they were all able to regroup together is because they were such close friends that they were able to air out their feelings and take time so no apology was needed.
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChromeOfTheFuture abby had a right to be angry, sure, but but not as angry as she was, nor for as long as she was. their situations were not comparable at all. abby at worst had to endure a somewhat uncomfortable date or two with someone who was already one of her friends (and therefore someone she knew she was safe with, it wasn't like he pawned her off on some wild card rando). the psychological damage that outing a person does is so, _so_ much worse, and having that held over your head, being _blackmailed_ with that as the threat, is even worse. living as a closeted person is terrifying. having someone hold that secret over you is even more so. just because in many places of the world it is generally safe for queer people to be out, it is still dangerous in just as many. even if in the area simon lives in his life likely isn't in danger, there are clearly still plenty of homophobic kids at his school who might make the rest of his time there a living hell (via verbal, mental, _and_ physical abuse). that is, if he doesn't commit suicide first. because being outed, being bullied, is exactly the kind of thing that causes kids to do that. very doubtful that abby would even consider offing herself over a brief relationship with a friend that didn't work out due to a mutual lack of chemistry. and while i personally don't mind that they all stayed friends in the end--they are just kids after all, they all make mistakes, none of them did irreparable harm to each other so they rightly forgave each other--i do think simon at very least deserved a real apology from them. (i'm glad to hear he got one in the book at least, a bit of a disappointment that they didn't in the film.) it's like they didn't really care that he was being blackmailed. and yeah, teens are dramatic and they think the world revolves around themselves, but damn if i as a teen wouldn't have been concerned for a friend being blackmailed (even if they hurt me because of it)?? some close friends they were to not only not care that their friend was being put through hell, but to abandon him during the worst part of it. sometimes no matter how close you are with someone, an apology _is_ needed.

Simon's friends ARE the worst. The only person who had any right to be angry was Abby. I like the way they handle it in the book, where she apologizes to him for being so angry and says that while she had the right to be angry, she also understands how hard the predicament was for him being blackmailed. The book is so good. It's called, Simon vs The Homosapien Agenda. Such a cute novel. Love, Simon is a much less wordy movie title lol.

I'm a latin American, when I came out as bi, my mom absolutely degraded me for it even saying it'd be less gross if I was just a lesbian. I came out to her first because I thought she'd be the more chill one out of my parents... After that massive fail, i came out to my dad the following week and his response was honestly one i would have never expected "Are you sure?" I said yes, getting ready to fight with him, "I am too... You know it's going to be hard right?" His identity was known amongst my family, but hidden like it was a shameful secret or brought out on rare occasions to insult him, which I had always thought was someone being an asshole about rumors for no reason. I guess because it was said out of negativity, i didn't believe it and as a result he got a little control about how it was presented to me, even if he knew it wasn't the first time I was hearing it. This is to say, if you feel unsafe, don't come out but remember that people can surprise you. My mom's chill now, even protective of my identity when others insult it and we can talk openly about my dating preferences. And I feel more connected to my dad after that coming out experience, like i wasn't alone in this identity within my family.

There's a spinoff series called Love, Victor. The actor who played Simon is a producer of the series, and Simon does a lot of voiceovers and makes a couple of appearances. And Simon's dad appears leading a PFLAG chapter. Jennifer Garner's scene with Simon is so beautiful. The "bluish" joke Martin makes about black Jewish is a major clue to who Blue is. Not that I caught it. I love how supportive the family is over Nora's food.

He was blackmailed into doin it or else he would’ve been outed which he wasn’t ready to do yet. Yeah, it's so much worse in the movie than in the book. In the book it's only really Abby that's mad at him for the Martin thing. Which makes sense as it was her that was being used. She gets over it pretty quickly though and they're able to move on. Nick doesn't really factor into that part and Leah is mad about unrelated things (she's also not into him in the book) which get resolved later on. This also happens after the brunt of the bullying, so he isn't alone for that in the book.

I sure hope I'd stand by them even if I was mad at them for what they did 🤷‍♀️ Also curious where I said he should get special treatment because he's gay? My only point was that he was going through a really hard time and instead of trying to understand what he was going through they just made it about themselves and dropped him then came back when all of the hard stuff he was going through was over. Basically they were only friends with him when it was convenient for them which isn't what true friends do.

@@malimaui2802 I again would love to see where I said it excuses him? They acted like he was the only one in the wrong and he wasn't. He apologized and reached out to make amends. They never really apologized for what they did. And yes everyone goes through things but sometimes what the other person is going through is simply bigger. That's just how life is. They could have been mad at him without ditching him when he really needed them. I can see getting upset initially but then to watch him get harassed and not say anything? I don't think I could even do that to someone I dislike but certainly not someone I claim is my friend. I feel like I was pretty fair with my statements. In 10th grade, I had a band rival who I developed very strong feelings for. The rivalry was innocent, but I spent weeks trying to get him to go from rivals to friends to MORE. The day I kissed him, I felt something I’d never felt before and have never felt since. One Friday night, after our Christmas concert, he asked me if I wanted to be his boyfriend. I melted. He said it had to be a secret. I agreed. That night, I put a small blurb in my MySpace description about how much he meant to me. I didn’t put his name, just his initials. It was far down in a block of text where I also mentioned other friends and people who meant something to me. I never expected, being that it seemed so buried, that anyone would notice it. When I got to school on Monday, everyone was talking about Travis’s gay “friendship” with someone else in band. Only 2 people had those initials, and one was a girl. I had inadvertently outed both of us. He was my boyfriend from Friday night to Monday morning. He hasn’t liked me since. For 15 years, I’ve never stopped loving him. Moral of the story: first loves die hard. Especially, when you accidentally kill them.

One of the things I like about this film is the friends’ reactions versus the parents’ reactions. As a gay man who has watched many films about coming of age, coming out LGBTQ+ people this was a nice change and reminder that different cisgender straight people in LGBTQ+ people’s lives have different ways in which they take the news that a person in their life is LGBTQ+. In most films it is the parents of the LGBTQ+ person that have a negative response of some kind. And while that’s certainly true for quite a number LGBTQ+ people’s lived experience with coming out to parents, some of us (including myself) had an experience similar to Simon’s where the parents are accepting and positive (one of the reasons I loved when one of the characters on the tv show Ugly Betty came out and his parents tried to throw him a coming out party which Betty and a gay co-worker stopped and tried to explain that even though they’re accepting and proud, the LGBTQ+ person has to take the step to come out to them rather than the other way around). For some LGBTQ+ people it is some of their friends, co-workers, and other people in their lives who react negatively to the news....and the negative reactions are ALWAYS self-interested. In other films this point is often missed, but I think this film makes it so OBVIOUS to the audience and it’s something cisgender straight people need to know about how some of them react. The way the audience feels about Simon’s friends in that moment (confused, sad, angry, etc) is exactly how so many LGBTQ+ people have felt by those reacting negatively to them coming out. The audience listening to their self interested reasons for their negative reactions towards Simon, however justified one might consider them, is honestly an overt way to show that every negative reaction is this way. In other films it’s usually portrayed as the parents reacting negatively and the parents negative reaction is grounded in religious language or biased societal language so it’s less obvious that the negative reaction is about the parents’ own self interests rather than actually about the LGBTQ+ person whose just come out to them. This film removes all of that. Nick and Abby symbolize friends, co-workers, etc in our lives because their upset about issues that interconnect with them while Leah symbolizes parents and family who often have their own dreams and desires for us that they now realize or think are gone. In essence, one’s self interest is about how our perceived connection to them may be based on lies while the other’s self interest was about how they pictured our lives with them. Nick & Abby dealt with lies by Simon. This symbolizes how sometimes friends, co-workers, colleagues, etc react to our coming out to them because for them they think that our coming out is about being honest with them and covering over lies when actually our coming out them is a huge step towards our own mental health and well-being. Likewise, Leah was in love with Simon and her feelings for him and the dreams she had for him and her being together are shattered. This is symbolic of how parents and family react. Simon coming out to Abby before Leah, despite knowing Leah longer is symbolic of the fact that LGBTQ+ people often come out to friends before they come out to family. Martin is definitely the antagonist in the film and his actions are definitely viewed negatively. Yet whenever I’ve discussed this film with my cisgender straight friends and point out that Martin symbolizes the way some cisgender straight people act in our society, they get upset. Martin is willing to keep Simon’s secret so long as Simon goes along with his plan. LGBTQ+ people are allowed to exist in cisgender straight society so long as we act like them, whenever we “deviate” from expected norms of what cisgender straight people decided was the correct way to dress, behave, etc for people or us then they attack. Martin’s outing of Simon symbolizes how cisgender straight media often is consumed with trying to out celebrities, etc. Cisgender straight people claim its LGBTQ+ people who are consumed by topics of gender and sexuality, yet it’s cisgender straight people who most discuss these things and the media reflects this. And it’s definitely always in the context of “how it related to me” instead of being inclusive of LGBTQ+ people. So if the cisgender straight people that are Simon’s friends come across as selfish and the cisgender straight antagonist comes across as selfish, it’s because that’s symbolic of the world LGBTQ+ people exist in (you can also take this film and change the narrative of sexuality and change it to race, ethnicity, or other types of minority groups within a nation/country/place and apply the same symbolism: the majority group always reacts to a minority group with self interest...they come across as selfish to the minority group, and rightly so; as my extended family is multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, etc, etc I think this is why my immediate and extended family took the news so well when I came out as other family members before me had....these types of difficult discussions have already taken place between the majority and minority groups within the family so such negative self interest reactions didn’t occur with them in my life, but instead with friends, co-workers, colleagues, etc). I agree, I have rewatched this film numerous times. I own it on DVD and when I had cable/satellite television anytime it was airing on a station I’d stop and watch it. It is a good movie with lots of great characters and good storytelling. I’m glad you enjoyed the movie! Thank you for reacting to it! I haven’t found many who have done a reaction to it. I have seen discussions about it, mostly by LGBTQ+ KZbinrs, but rarely has any reactions channels I’ve come across done it. So this was a pleasant surprise to see that you watched and reacted to the film! So thank you! The film is considered important because it’s the first film of its genre (coming out) to be a mainstream studio film that was released nationwide to all cinemas. As a gay man whose watched this genre of films quite often, previous films of this genre were made by independent film studios (some owned by folks I’m friends with) and if released were to limited cinemas (I remember traveling all the way to a major metropolitan area with some LGBTQ+ friends to watch one of these types of films) or is a direct to home video film (or direct to streaming film like Alex, Strangelove on Netflix). The tv series Love, Victor is also considered groundbreaking as well (though I only recently got Hulu and haven’t watched it myself yet, I’ve read numerous articles in LGBTQ+ media about it and had numerous friends, LGBTQ+ and cisgender straight, tell me about it and point out its groundbreakingness). I’m actually glad that so much mainstream stuff exists today for LGBTQ+ people to watch, especially young people still in the closet. As a teen the closest to seeing LGBTQ+ people for me was on MTV’s reality show The Real World. By the time I was coming out Matthew Shepard was murdered in Wyoming and Will & Grace had debuted on television. To say that I had mixed feelings about the type of world I was coming out to is definitely an understatement. However getting involved in volunteering with LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations that provided support to LGBTQ+ people and then bringing that back to my hometown to start a similar type organization which ended up also starting my hometown of 50,000 people’s continuing annual pride events in 2009 definitely has made me feel a little better about the world today for LGBTQ+ people, although I’m still acutely aware there are many places in the world where LGBTQ+ people cannot even come out and I hope I live to see the day when that’s no longer the case. Great video!!

My coming out when I was 17 was relatively drama-free. All the people I cared about were loving & accepting but what I love about this movie is just how accurate that feeling before coming out is. As Simon said, I was & am proud of who I am but it is such a weight and concern that if you tell the world who you are, they may not accept you. And his mum’s description of it being like holding you’re breath, you were constantly on guard, trying to hide yourself until you’re ready. Thank you for this reaction, Seb. It has given me such a feeling of warmth & joy. Not just because of the movie but the fact that you and others feel this too.

Wow ... I thought I was the only one who felt angry about his friends' reaction to him. That they completely disregarded the ugly fact of his being blackmailed and his fear of exposure. They absolutely made the terrible situation about themselves, with no compassion for him. They were more angry with him than they were with the blackmailer. Their reaction - and my sense of aggrieved injustice for Simon - made it hard for me to rewatch the film. Especially because no one else seemed bothered by the reaction of such "friends". His parents are the best ... every LGBTQ person deserves at least that ... so they have the strength to deal with the world - which is frequently less than kind. Dangerous, in fact, depending on the part of the world.

I love this movie! It's just such a sweet feel good movie. I am bi, when I came out I did lose a few friends. Thankfully my family didn't write me off, but they also don't really like to talk about or acknowledge it really. It hurts to not be able to one hundred percent be myself around them; part of why I like this movie is that everyone in his family was so understanding and accepting. Love it!

Thank you for watching Love, Simon 💖 I broke down so many times in this movie because I couldn’t come out until I was in my mid 20’s. I missed out on a lot growing up in a conservative country where it’s taboo to be gay in any community/culture…FEAR & REJECTION from those I love…. 😔 It was a special film. For a change it was not a depressing tragic story like so many critically acclaimed LGBTQIA+ movies out there. The only problem I had was my former flat mate from London (Docklands) revealed spoilers before I watched the film. He is still in my bad books about that! 😒 So thank you again Seb for watching and reacting to this feel good (yes the friends were selfishly awful) movie - it means a lot that you did ♥️🥰.

I went to the theater one night and was going to see Black Panther for the 5th time, and made a last minute decision to see this instead. I ended up watching it a total of 8 times in theaters. I saw this film in theatres and the best bit was the whole theatre standing up and applauding when blue turned up, it was so heartwarming to be in a place filled with love and acceptance. damn if that wasn’t one of the best experiences I’ve had.

I never liked how Simon's friends treated him. Simon legitimately thought that Leah was in love with Nick, and while Abby had every right to be angry at Simon, he WAS being blackmailed by that kid Martin. Neither of them bother to hear his side nor do they bother getting up to defend or help him when he's clearly going through hell.

Something like that actually happened to me in high school. One of my friends outed me without my permission on Facebook. All of my friends turned their backs on me and started to become bullies. They didn't want to be friends with a gay person. I was literally the loneliest person in my school. It hurt like hell and felt so unfair. He took that from me and I hate him till this day. I found a new group of friends after few months but I never really fully recover emotionally from all of this. He got expelled from the school when the teachers found out about what he did. Outing someone against their will has to be one of the cruelest thing you can do. Please don't be like that...

In the book "Simon vs The Homosapiens Agenda" his friends don't desert him. All that happens is Abby comes and hugs him and whispers in his ear not to use her like a piece of meat, but understands why he did and forgives him.

im gay so like i could be biased but his friends were kinda disappointing. like i get why they were mad and simon definitely shouldn't have done that, but at the very least defend him when he's being humiliated in front of the school? especially considering he was put in such a compromising position, at least TRY to see where he was coming from. and i feel like their anger needs to be directed at martin more than simon.

Such a feel-good movie! Loved your reactions. I'd say the book has got even more to offer in the warm fuzzies department. I actually preferred the way Simon and Blue's meeting was done there. It still happened at the carnival, but imo the movie went a bit too Hollywood with a bunch of people watching and cheering. Book version was more intimate.

I just finished watching the film. That scene with his friends caught me off guard a little bit. I knew his friend were gonna be mad at him to some degree because obviously he lied to them for months. And it's not just simple lie, he literally made Abby and Nick misunderstood each other. But what surprised me was that I thought after his friends were mad at him they were gonna show some empathy towards him. I think it might come to do with the screenwriting because at this point in the film the writer probably want Simon to feel the lowest. So they made them angry at him and walked away without comfort him about his outing. To me Abby and Nick had good reason to be mad at him and Leah wasn't that much. Overall it's still great movie. I love it. haha

Those character depictions were pretty accurate, most people only see the small circle around them and think everything is about them. Also the socially clumsy behaviour is pretty spot on. It's kind of sad, but it is what it is. : ) Awesome reaction video once again Seb! o/

If i were his friends, once i had heard the full story that Simon was being blackmailed i'd be mad, sure (maybe ignore him for a day) but i would then help him out. I wouldn't abandon him at the most difficult part of his life, even if i was in love with him. Or if i were Simon, ida tried telling his friends and they'd help him out and make sure Martin mind his own beeswax

I love this so much. I can say that losing my eyesight 2 years ago, finding yourself attracted to anyone, it goes beyond visual attraction. I do feel like, I have to come out again, that I'm blind. Even though I don't look like the stereotypical blind person, that's mostly portrayed in society. Just know that, you are still you. Thank you for watching, Love, Simon.
