Johnny Giles was interviewed about 2 weeks before the tournament and asked how did he think England would do. He simply stated that Southgate didn't know what his best team or formation was, and this was not a position to be in 2 weeks before a major tournament and it would be found out.

Alex Crook has made a valid point and Simon was off the mark here. A lot of people were left scratching their heads at Southgate's squad choices and not forgetting his inability to see where players are most comfortable playing. Not bringing a fit left back and bringing too many right full backs, doesn't look like evidence of clear planning.

They;re not unprepared? The manager lamented the loss of Kalvin Phillips. He took only one LB. He doesnt know how to play Rice/Bellingham/Foden. We’re struggling to score goals. His style of play has created a massive divide between the players and the fans in a tournament where we were heralded as one of the favourites. Of course we’re under prepared. It’s ridiculous to suggest otherwise

Trent Alexander being played in midfield and Luke Shaw being in squad but Saka playing his position tells you all you need to know. You experiment during friendlies, Nations League, not during actual tournament. And since Southgate refuses to drop his favorites in those, now he's running behind and trying to catch up.

Yes, teams have not played well and won and teams have played well and lost. It's in the nature of the game. But, generally, you give yourself a much better chance of winning by playing well, especially when there are restricted opportunities in knock-out competitions to put things right when they are going wrong. If, within the next 30-45 minutes of the next match there is no improvement in performance, Gareth Southgate needs to bite the bullet, swallow any pride that he might have, or personal devotions to certain players, and get subs on sooner rather than later and for tactical reasons rather than out of last-minute desperation. I think that he would (a) get greater respect for that (even if we lose), (b) the under-performers would clearly get the message that nobody was irreplaceable and (c) the subs would have a greater incentive to prove themselves and be effective and sufficient time on the pitch to be able to do so. Time is running out and we may have already exhausted our share of luck.

The horse had already bolted before we started the tourney. I see no evidence of preparation. Grealish is brave enough to stand with the ball, which draws players in. Would have gave us time to build down that side. How do we not have a left back?

Yes these players havent looked their best Simon, but that's down to being played out of position for most of them, and it doesn't help when we can only attack down one side of the pitch because the whole left side hampered by the players southgate picked, and that's not a dig at the players because it's really not their fault.

I don't know about underprepared. Sometimes you can have a best team going into a tournament which has performed well and then they'll have a stinker or a series of stinkers and suddenly it doesn't look like your best team anymore, so I can sympathise on that front. What I would prefer to say is it's been 'mismanaged'. If you're playing players out of position and they're not performing and you're still not willing to take them off then you're mismanaging your team and I have no sympathy.
