Xavi managed in Qatar for a few years, and he looks to be a great young manager. It could help Gerrard to go and work with lesser players away from the media for a while, so he can experiment with tactics, methods, and man management.

That was my first thought as well. If Danny thought of Xavi it would have lend credence to his argument. It's true you need to keep working to hone your craft, even if it's not your preferred option. Most would take a bag and coach in Saudi Arabia over coaching in the Championship.

lets be real, Xavi is the only outlier and even then, was his mentor not more so the reason he looks to be a good young manager because he played under Guardiola? Gerrard could easily get a job in Europe or even South America even if it meant dropping down a level and if he did well, he would then start to open more doors higher up - you don't do that playing in Qatar or Saudi Arabia

Maybe Gerrard doesn’t care about how you view him Jim and Simon. Maybe he wants to go and earn some money and develop his coaching with top players and build his confidence. Whilst doing that he probably doesn’t care what people think of him, he probably cares more about building his confidence and developing his skill set. As a manager he won a Scottish league, but failed in PL. he's not by any shape an elite coach. he needs to build himself back up before he's even considered for a decent PL job. He should go to the Championship or even back to Scotland or League 1/2. Manage Tranmere or Wigan cos they're not far from Liverpool.

Unfortunately Simon and as a consequence you are wrong. Just listen to yourselves. If Championship owners think like you and Simon ( which has a lot of merit). They won’t give him a job. His ego took him to Villa, too soon. You are both assuming because he done well at Rangers that he is any good at management. When Mourinho, Conte fail in the premier league, along with many others more capable than Gerard. What makes you think he has what it takes. Unless he really believes in himself which I’m guessing, Villa challenged that ego, he’d be a bloody fool not to take the money. As for Simon he mainly talks sense but asking what relevance Saudi money has in football is the height of stupidity. They own Newcastle and Middle Eastern money is embedded now fully in European football. What relevance? Their money makes them relevant. They are not spending because they are bored, they are not stupid. Far from it.

Steven Gerrard's acute generation X personality and credentials means he's not open minded enough to be a successful manager in the modern game with the plethora of Generation Z players. As lay testament to his England days during the Golden Generation and general Generation X characteristics, he forms cliques and doesn't get on well with outsiders. He might start off well at Clubs but eventually his personality will get found out and he will always lose the dressing room because he comes across as not a very friendly guy to people he doesn't know.

Interesting that Jim White chooses to take such a patronising tone when he refers to 'Al Ettifaq'. The Saudi League is clearly on the up and will continue to grow in the next few years, and also I am not sure there is any evidence that clubs in the Championship are currently wanting to bring in Gerrard so it is a mute point. In contrast Danny Murphy makes a sound point about getting more coaching hours and under your belt to develop as opposed to sitting on the sofa or in a TV studio not doing a great deal.

Danny Murphy's argument is so weak and ridiculous. Put simply if not for the money would he consider the move? Absoultely not! There are mutiple leagues in Europe that don't have high quality champions league participation, and are miles ahead of the teams in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi league is much weaker, it will be difficult with a bigger language barrier as most players will be Saudi/Arabic and not speak english, and providing any sort of achievement is not merit by itself in making it back to an english premier league team! And it definitely is not SG's only option, that I can guarantee, the only reason Saudi want him is for his name based on his reputation as a player.

Murphy started off so confident about the footballing merits of his mate Gerrard taking a job in Saudi Arabia. That backyourmate-delusion unraveled and he was backtracking within a minute or so, Simon barely even had to try.

Ange Postecoglou managed in austrillia and then the J league for years then gets the celtic job all of which I don't suspect are amazing football playing leagues and goes on to the Premier league... So don't see how going to Saudi can damage Gerrards career if he does a decent job and plays an attractive brand of football he can still go on to bigger clubs...

this is silly. the saudi league wealth is personal wealth. the wealth of the english league came from tv broadcasters, the only reason the broadcasters put so much money into it is because they knew they could make even more from people watching it because it was popular.

Sorry Danny, you don't learn by coaching at "any level". By that logic, top class managers would be flying to the likes of Indonesia or Philippines to coach there! Call a spade a spade - Gerrard, right now, isn't able to manage in the Premier League. His best bet would be to coach in the Championship, get a club promoted and possibly have a decent run in the FA Cup.
