The sad part is players now get overpaid ridiculous amounts of salaries for playing. The game was much more physical back then so being the players now are fitter , stronger, plus technically their much better now. You were lucky in England if a centre half could pass the ball, now everyone has too. Plus the drinking culture back then was common. Souness would barely stay on the pitch now . They would completely struggle without being to pass back to the goalie . The game is much more focused on playing football than kicking each other. It's the reason why we needed foreign coaches to develop our game. Especially after our ban from Europe, its why we got left behind for some yrs in Europe.

Jordan is right. Declan Rice is a lovely bloke but a very average footballer indeed. Don’t get me wrong he’s not BAD, he’d get into any Championship side and most bottom half Prem sides, but world beater he is not and it’s a sad reflection on English football that he is getting into the England team. Declan Rice is very good at two things 1. intercepting possession on loose balls or errant passes 2. getting on the ball and passing short distances with accuracy and retaining possession those two things are very valuable when done well, but lets not pretend like that is worth 100 million or deserves automatic selection

Don’t get me wrong. England have produced a lot of great technical players that I like a lot. Eze, JoeCole, Gascoigne, LeTissier, Scholes, Foden, Palmer, Maddison, Bellingham, Carrick, Trent, RicoLewis, Stones. However, they have a poor football culture, they still prefer players like Milner, Gallagher, Willock, Henderson, KalvinPhillips, Gerrard, Lampard, ScottParker, Rice. England fans are risk averse, they reject any modern ideology. They don’t want to take more risks, playing less defensive capable attacking profile players to outscore their opponents. Instead, they cheer when they make a good tackle. English managers don’t believe that TACTICS is at least 90% of what it matters. They don’t have a step by step methodic approach. They can’t micromanage every positioning and movements of their players like a chess game. They park the bus. They are boring, direct and defensive. They prefer physical, athletic, hardworking players, rather than skillful, technical, creative players with good teamwork.
