If the other home nations were at the top of the rankings and were going deep into Tournaments it might mean a bit more, but it's only the Tournaments themselves that make games meaningful. Eg a friendly against Germany isn't that important, but if it was in a Tournament then it's mega big.

Truthfully, England don't really have a 'massive' footballing rival anymore. Scotland have been poor for too long, and England have been poor enough in major international tournaments that we haven't recorded the big wins required over other big footballing nations (France, Germany, Spain, Brazil etc.) to really develop a rivalry with any of them. If we manage to send an Italy or France packing at Euro 2024 then a rivalry may start to develop, but I can't see us having a Brazil-Argentina or Germany-Netherlands or France-Italy type rivalry for a long time.

Rivalries often build in silence tbh. As England, we have focused way too much on how many times Germany has ruined tournament hopes for us, and I think for a lot of people, that fixture takes more meaning on that it really deserves to. Most of the time historically, Germany has had better national teams. That doesn't always mean they had better quality players (although most of the time they did), but there's nothing you can really do about that. England have let that Rivalry define expectations for tournaments into a really narrow window, and often lost sight of the need to just do well, no matter who we were faced with. Every time you play Germany is a chance to beat them, and it's entirely different each time.

I think us English live rent-free in the heads of all other home nations. For some reason they can't just get along with us when I know full well that we cheer them on when they get to tournaments. Says one who's national tv and newspapers goes back to the england world Cup win ramming it down everyone's neck every time they're in a tournament. The arrogance of football's coming home trash again is a constant pain though was a dream to see the trophy going to Italy.

@@oldmacdreadapexriddims1460 Maybe if you lot qualified for more tournaments the media would care more about your football team. Also, try not to take the 'football's coming home' chants too seriously, we sing it after beating San Marino in the qualifiers...it's funny.

@@oldmacdreadapexriddims1460 Does that annoy you because it reflects the fact that England have a far better chance of winning an int tournament than any of the home nations? The media are horrid, don't get me wrong. But it seems to annoy home nations crowd more because its a constant reminder that as per England's population and dominance in terms of the quality and calibre of footballing talent, it stands the most chance of winning a euros or world cup out of any of the home nations.

It obviously means more to Scotland not only because of history but England has every advantage possible in the sport. However the English are absolutely kidding themselves if they want to act like they won't celebrate the win and rub it in tomorrow if they win the game.

Of course, it's a football match. Just because we care less about the rivalry than you do, does it mean we aren't allowed to celebrate and rub it in if we win? You lot would go WILD if you won hahaha so let's not kid ourselves. It is what it is. I'll probably be laughing either way whatever happens tbh. I just hope it ain't a draw because that would be boring.

England. Two European finals. In 1966 a win at Wembley - it's a goal that should not have stood and another that should have been disallowed because English fans had invaded the pitch. The second, also at Wembley (golly!) when they lost despite their opponents were playing in second gear. The Premier League is great but how many English players make a best-in-class team? Any? Hopefully this time Kane can win the Golden Boot again at the World Cup perhaps with two tap-ins, two (three?) penalties and a deflection off his heel when he was looking elsewhere. There's a reason that the England team is best of the home teams. England is ten times larger. It's also why we smaller nations dislike barrow boy millionaires and that Eastender mispronunciation. Can Simon not afford a speech coach? What is this "tv" sound that regularly appears in his sentences? That said that he does regularly talk common sense in football matters. For Simon and surely Jim, just remember the first King of the United Kingdom was a Scot. :)

Apparently Denis Law was playing golf when England won the WC in 1966, he didn't want to know anything about it ! Scotland has always been my second favourite team after England, I was very disappointed when Scotland failed at the 1978 WC with one of the best teams they have had. It may turn out to be a dull game as no-one wants to get injured before the leagues resume.

This game means nothing, compared to what it "used" to mean. I remember the 50's, through to 1984, when the Home Nations Competition was alive and kicking (I still miss it) and we did have some fiery affairs and to beat each other, especially England vs Scotland, meant everything. But that was back in the day when Scotland actually had a Squad worth talking about, especially in the 70's. Sorry Scotland, but now there is not one playing that one could describe as "World Class", where as back in the day, the Scottish Squad was littered with them. Now, for England to beat Scotland, even with the Squad as weak as it is, thanks' to Southgate, is no big deal and to beat England means more to the Scottish Supporters, than it does to most Englishmen. Ireland and Wales too, had some brilliant Players back in the day, sadly not so much now.

@@andrewjoyce9038 Under Southgate, yes they are. They have no chance of ever winning another World Cup, or ever winning the Euro's, the Squad is not good enough and even less so with Southgate in charge. England are fine, until they come up against one of the top Nations and then they fall flat on their face and fail miserably. When was the last time England beat France, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Croatia, Italy, etc. in a Competition. That is the problem with a lot of Englishmen, delusions of grandeur when it comes to the English Football National Side and think it is their God given right to win. One World Cup, 57 years ago and nothing else before, or since,, tells us all, it is not.
