People are so mean and have 0 concept of the idea that regardless of how "important" the Olympics are, it's still just a game. And 100% not worth risking permanent injury or death for. I'm not American, but I remember the way Simone handled the situation and just thought: "That's it. That is what a true role model is." If you're that good at what you do (and let's be honest, Simone is one in a hundred years, she is unparalleled) and you handle such an unfathomably difficult situation with poise, with dignity and with incredible responsibility, like Simone did at the time, every human being should look at that and learn what true courage and strength looks like. Simone, I salute you. You're the most badass human being of our age.

@CarolynCressette
@CarolynCressette 7 ай бұрын
She did not have a broken ankle. Kerri was also from a different time when people knew the stakes they were at and winning gold was everything. The US team at that games had a myriad of issues as several teammates fell or had issues of their own. Kerri KNEW she was the only hope to secure the win. SHE DID WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO IN THE END AND HAS ZERO REGRETS IN DOING SO.

Those who are saying Kerri Strug wasn't forced... yes she was. She was 16 years old under the supervision of an abusive coach. When a CHILD has all the adults around her telling her that she must perform, a CHILD will do what she's told.

@@jessicateixeira4633 It's interesting because this happens all the time with singers as well. In opera some of the music can get so difficult and you're using so many different muscles to move your voice properly that if you mentally back off and aren't connected to your body, difficult high notes or passages won't come out properly. Kind of interesting to see how physical singing is and how much athletes and singers may share in terms of syncing their bodies

Simone made the best decision at the time to keep herself safe. As for nationalism for the team she was competing for, no duh! Despite the fact she made the best decision for her safety, the media exploited Simone's market for drama. I remember outlets questioning her prowess to compete for "USA." Meanwhile, their channels NEEDED her, a black woman breaking records, to help their channels get viewers. Point blank, Simone is an industry who created a market for those complaining about herself. The people who knew anything about gymnastics knew what had happened. It's interesting to learn what the lead up had been during warm-ups but that makes sense. I just wish the twisties would have been explained at the time. And now she just explained that it had to be categorized as an injury of some sort so that the lineup could be changed. Everyone needs to understand that we are all human and she was having a “human” moment. If she tried to fight through it. She could have had a number of falls and the US would have not even made the podium. It’s a damn if you do, damn if you don’t situation.

The things we did to Michelle Kwan at the 2002 Olympics in the USA. The pressure we put on these amazing phenomenal athletes is unfair.

Absolutely! And I've noticed some sports news channels are already doing it again. I saw NBC post saying how "Simone will surpass this gymnast in Paris when she gets ____ gold metals." I'm like this is exactly the pressure that hurt Simone in Tokyo! It's so frustrating

You think she’s peaked when she competes and elevates her sport to new heights but then she speaks and she’s even more impressive. Honestly she’s just phenomenal the whole world is better for having her in it.

I semi knew Simone’s name before the Tokyo Olympics. I knew she was a really good gymnast but that’s about it. When she stepped out of the Tokyo Olympics for her mental health, she instantly became my favorite and I’ve been heavily rooting for her ever since. She is so incredibly strong in literally every way and she is such a good role model to kids. It makes me sad that there are people out there who criticized her, but anyone who knows anything about mental health and is just a decent human, 1000% supported and applauded that decision. Simone Biles is truly amazing 👏🏻🤌🏻

I had something similar. The “twisties” for high jump in track (high school), I went from getting 1st and 2nd place and qualified for state, to all of the sudden not knowing how to do it anymore. Ended up hurting my back because of doing it incorrectly, had no control over it and was never able to do it again because my mind was so messed up and my body wasn’t doing what i wanted it to do. I unfortunately Had to quit. I praise Simone for getting out of that. So so difficult to deal with especially at the level she is competing at. Plus all the eyes on her. She’s so amazing.

Oh, like the yips, this explanation makes so much sense! The equivalent in veterinary is a bad vein day, where for some reason your hands just aren't getting those venipunctures. If i miss 2 in a day i defer to colleagues for a few days because there's no point trying to retrieve it. Body says no. Wish commentary teams had explained it better at the time

Same for me as a nurse. I’m usually good at venipunctures, but I’ve learned to feel when it’s not gonna happen. At this point I can tell while I’m setting up and bow out before the stick. I just do enough favors on the good days to call one in when I need it.

To be the best in the world, but be humble enough to realize you need to step down is such an underrated act of integrity…she is the most humble and that’s why she’s the goat and the fact that she was so excited to give the other girls an opportunity ugh she’s just amazing

You are after all still HUMAN and things happen. You were a leader when you chose yourself Simone! The east of team USA were champs as well, all of you were a wonderful example at Tokyo.

I’m so happy Paris worked out the way it did because it really showed the world that she’s not a quitter and she’s a graceful loser by bowing to Rebecca. Also the scores proved that she could be beaten and had she taken it would have tanked the team’s chances for a medal, so it was the right call. I’m just beyond happy for her, more than any other athlete this games! And America has always loved you Simone 🇺🇸

The fact that she thought America hated her because she didn’t achieve absolute perfection one single time publicly absolutely shatters me. I’m pretty sure most people would agree we don’t love her just because her gymnastics is ALWAYS perfect. Yes, that’s initially why we started paying attention and call her the GOAT. But at the end of the day, she’s a fucking human being. We love her because we have never consistent seen talent like hers. Ever. And to see her come back and push through, after everything we watched her and the other girls go through, just to help her team, and make her people and the US proud, shows her character. She’s the GOAT because she gets shit DONE. And now, she’s shown us not only is she STILL and FOREVER the GOAT, she also showed us that it is 1000% possible and okay to take time for you. To work on yourself, rest, heal, and continue something because it makes you HAPPY. Not because you feel like you have to. We might never see talent like hers ever again. Definitely not in this life time. Elite is the definition of Simone Biles.
