Wait!? 20-30 years above 1.5C? By the time we officially reach 1.5C we will have years at 2-2.5C? It’s weird because I’ve never actually seen an official definition of 1.5C it’s just people saying something likes it’s an average over many years. Given that we know the climate will keep warming, saying we don’t pass 1.5 until being above it for 30 years seems like a convenient way to kick the can down the road even more.
@SeiShinCasios
@SeiShinCasios 2 күн бұрын
I think it is almost Always spoken about in context to the Paris Agreement of 1.5 degree and that is a 10 year average. So in 5 years we are officially above the 1.5 threshhold. Dont know where the " in 20.years" is coming from.

yes, this is one of the most commonly talked about flaws, by climate scientists, when it comes to determining the moment we have truly passed 1.5. the rise can only be evaluated in hindsight, meaning by the time we've reached consecutive years above 1.5, we'll already have experienced a handful of years close or above 2* C

The faster T° rise, the faster the average over 30years is reached. Especially since averages are very sensitive to extrêmes. So if T° reach+2°c next year, it only takes a couple years for the average to cross the 1.5 threshold. Honestly, it s discussing if the patient lost 10 or 11 L of blood. At that point it doesn t make much of a différence, he is in deep trouble. 😅

If you are an American environmentalist who feels hopeless in the modern political system, you are not alone. Don’t give in to despair; you can make a massive impact on the political conversation by spending wisely, learning a new skill, and gaining info on those responsible for the climate crisis. Those who find the courage can take examples set recently and do something that prior environmentalists were too afraid to do in defense of future generations. Happy new year. Get to work.

one thing that most people forget is that due to the byproduct of the pollution we humans release the earth is getting more reflective by about -0.5°C worldwide 1 year average. and so on top of the already 1.5°C warming we have another +0.5°C to add to that so once we get off fossil fuels the atmosphere should get a bit more clear and less smog across the globe. so its safe to say it's pretty safe to say even the 2.0°C target is bye bye already. and thats bad cus thats when tipping points would start to happen for real.

For me, you strike the right balance between pragmatism and alarmism, directly informing my priorities and decisions during my ongoing home remodel/renovation project. I forced myself to be very hard-headed about how best to deploy my limited budget, doing cost & climate benefit analyses that often yielded unexpected and delightful benefits. For example, replacing my 50-year-old gas-fired forced-air home heating system with a ductless mini-split heat pump system was a no-brainer from the perspectives of climate, consumption and efficiency, but it also made my home MUCH quieter.

People say they're stupid and they impede progress, and they are kind of right, but when a bad decision is made at the federal level (by voters or otherwise) states rights end up being the main safety net that keeps things from going ALL BAD. Will it still go mostly bad? Yes, but something is better than nothing.

to anybody who sees this. it may be easy to lose hope, and decide not to take any action yourself since we’re ’already doomed’. an alarming number of people in this comments section, who seemingly were climate-hopeful before, have turned to doomerism and extreme pessimism over bad news coming from this video. i know i’m just some random girl on the internet, and i’ll probably get a million replies saying i’m wrong, but i would just like to reiterate: WE ARE NOT DOOMED. as long as common people start taking action. renewables are exploding in usage, especially in developing countries, and a UN target of tripling renewables which seemed impossibly ambitious before is now almost within reach. china, by far the world’s number one producer of CO2, is only just starting to decarbonise, and is on track to be by far the world’s number one user of renewable energy. of course, the united states is… still the united states, and trump will most likely be quite a roadblock for sufficient climate policies, but: believe it or not, the USA is not the only country in the world - the election is not a fatal blow for global climate action. and if trump’s presidency does end up being a complete disaster (as it probably will be), new candidates will emerge in the next election, and support for policies in opposition to trump’s (i.e. pro-climate action), will most likely hugely increase. so, to anyone who decides to read this, don’t give up hope! there are still things that you can do, such as decreasing your individual energy use, reducing your waste, changing your diet, and spreading the word to others, persuading them to do the same. and most importantly, don’t fall victim to doomerism. despair and hopelessness is the last thing the world needs right now.

There is one thing though, and it's that I've been wondering how you've internally thought about how meeting political figures has (as you say) changed your perspective on national politics. It was really strange to me initially how meeting your PM was arranged, but in hindsight to me it really feels like they've just used you for positive PR, but even worse, that they might make you, and *your audience* more favourable of the current government despite some critical issues with it. "Centrist labour" is a good tagline, but I'm afraid I don't know if I think that's enough criticism to be done. You sometimes add "not that they're perfect" or similar to leftleaning parties when describing them on climate issues, and when you do this I wish you elaborated on that. I think trusting your viewers not to go "well if they're not perfect then I'll vote conservative" is important, or else you might alienate left-leaning people who think you're being too light and decay your audience into a state of complacency on the topic I know you are so passionate about. Sorry if this is too forward! Just some thoughts

My personal view is the tax revenue should go into a global fund to pay for transitioning to solar, wind, batteries, and EVs, and for damages that are already happening. There should be open accounting for the fund.

Simon talked a lot about global CO2 emissions, coal power plants etc but not a single mention of methane emissions and the changes there. even if all of Europe and China drop to zero CO2 emissions, it is all for naught if methane escapes from the bellies of billions of cattle or the melting of large parts of permafrost around the Arctic circle.

Wrote my first article on climate change in 1979 and have seen a lot of people making futile attempts to grow the arctic ice. They should have looked at some of these U.S. Patents from the 70"s and 80's. the earliest was number 3,750,412 in 1973 and last 4,523,879 in 1987. They involve spraying sea water through devices like snow making cannons, the companies involved actually created ice islands and ice structures. If this technology was used in currents flowing toward the polar ice fields, several square miles could be added to the polar ice cap daily with just a handful of machines. Many of the islands created were in excess of twenty feet thick. This could, in time, lower sea surface temperatures around the world and vastly reduce the number of Atmospheric River and weather bomb events.

4:38 The Great Barrier Reef's coral cover reached the greatest extent ever recorded in 2022, 2023 and 2024 (AIMS), and that is despite reports of supposed repeated bleaching, despite starfish predation and despite any bad weather. It should be renamed the Greatest Barrier Reef! If you look at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) data, the WIO (West Indian Ocean) shows 26% hard coral cover in 1985 upto 30% in 2020. South Asia reefs shows a decline around 2000 to below 25% then a regrowth to around 40% (2010) and a decline to 25% (2020). The Red Sea shows no change at around 25% (1995-2020). So the pattern in these three areas show no relationship to each other or to a changing climate. The Caribbean region reefs have a cover of around 0.15 ± 0.02. There is no evidence of a major reduction in coral cover in the Caribbean over the last two decades. GCRMN data for the most important coral bioregion, the East Asia Seas, with 30% of the world’s coral reefs, and containing the most diverse coral of the ‘Coral Triangle’, show no statistically significant net coral loss since records began. The East Asia region has the biggest human population living in close proximity to reefs, and is located in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool - the hottest major water mass on earth. Life is most diverse in the warmest parts of the world’s oceans. This has been shown across 13 major taxonomic groups from zooplankton to marine mammals. Warmer water = more biodiversity. This is a scare story about things you cannot see.
@ertelmisegi
@ertelmisegi 2 күн бұрын
While GBR coral cover reached highs in 2022, fast-growing species remain vulnerable to future stressors. Regional trends (WIO, South Asia, Red Sea) mask significant local variations and long-term threats from warming, pollution, and overfishing. Caribbean coral cover has declined significantly since the 1970s, contrary to the claim of stability. East Asia reefs show resilience but face rising threats. The biodiversity argument oversimplifies warming’s effects, as extreme heat causes bleaching; the issues stem from the fact that the rate of warming is unprecedented and leaves little room for adaptation. You dismiss well-documented global challenges and overstate positive trends.
