Nice to see a Murphy bed construct that doesn’t require expensive hardware. For the top molding board that flips up and down, it would be useful to use a hinge that snaps open (like a kitchen cabinet hinge) so that the board could stay in a flipped up position until you flip it down, thereby making it easier to fold the bed away.

only problem is that those hinges he used are not made for the constant use and angles of pressure that a Murphy bed entails. They wear out quickly and cause undue stress upon the users. That is the reason there is "confusing" hardware involved in creating many murphy beds.

Very well thought out design and final construction. Anyone with building skills could figure this out with your detailed presentation. I’m sure experienced fabricators might bring their own ideas on how to achieve the results they want on certain parts. For example, using 1/4 inch plywood on the front facing of the platform and 1x4 inch internal structure would reduce weight of the mattress platform. Including wood glue along all the joined surfaces will improve strength. The locking pin could be placed at a slightly lower position if it’s too high for the end user. Some type of spring latch could be used instead of the pin to eliminate anyone forgetting to lock it in the upright position.

This looks great. Well made, good design, good explaining how the trim covers and makes it look professional. I’ve been looking at a few designs. The only thing I question is why didn’t you put a small wooden lip around the edge to help hold the mattress. Everything looks soo good but functionally it’s annoying to have to cable tie the mattress and remake the bed each time. I’ve seen other beds with small wooden lips and small straps over the corners to support the mattress and fitted sheet. I would want to put domes on the wood and duvet to hold them in place. I love the top opening trim on the hinge.

Very nice! Most impressive!! I've been thinking along these lines of using door hinges. My room is a bit shorter in hight than yours so I'll build mine horizontally. I like the idea too of putting the legs on the end and having a hinged piece of trim hide them!👍 In reading some of the comments regarding the hinges, if I'm thinking correctly, this would not be a piece of furniture used day in and day out. So the "use" factor would/should be minimal. And as for being "amorous" on it, even well constructed big box store beds break under THOSE conditions!!! ROFLMBO 😂 Keep up the good work and keep those ideas coming! Thank you.
@Struthio_Camelus Жыл бұрын
I'm more concerned about the bolts that hinge the legs at the outer end of the bed. I might over-bore the holes and use bushings to run the bolt through. that would increase the weight-bearing surface and shield the wood from being chewed by the bolt threads.

nice build. when the unit is in the upright position, what is holding it in place (preventing it from falling)?
@SimonSaysDIY3 жыл бұрын
There are several argue screws anchoring the cabinet to the studs in the wall. As for the door, I drilled a hole through the cabinet frame and into the bed frame. That hole is for a metal pin or large bolt that locks it in the upright position. You want that pin to be at the top of the door so that the leverage isn’t working against it. To unlock just pull the pin out and it’s free to move. Thanks! :)
