Pull The Plug by Death is amazing. The first death metal riff I learnt (THERE IS NO HOPE WHY DON'T YOU etc etc)

Still my all time favorite death song. The riff is brutal yet catchy, and the "why don't you" section just makes you want to punch something, or put the pedal to the floor while driving.

@@craigpaulson3503 So simple too. It just goes to show that a good guitar tone and rhythm that you can headbang/tap your foot to is the key to an awesome riff.

If such lessons had existed in the 90s it would have been so much easier to figure out how some riffs are being played. All you got were Songbooks and the heaviest stuff you could get as Tabulature was Slayer. For everything else you have to sit down listen and try.

Recommendation: Begin to memorize the A Minor/C Major Scale (same scale: A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A) all over the neck. Then, when you learn a new chord, trick, or technique, see how it would fit into the A Minor/C Major Scale, in addition to the original versions you learned. There's no hurry to learn it all at once. You can take a year or two, learning it, or even longer. As you learn that scale, it will become easier to learn other Minor/Major Scales like E Minor/G Major, B Minor/D Major, and D Minor/F Major. Also remember that you don't have to learn everything! Just start learning. I started late, too (as a drummer shifting to guitar).
