Crikey Simon , this took me back to my happy childhood, we had one of these, my fathers pride & joy, on a Sunday afternoon it was music time, we were never allowed to put the records on though, which was probably a good idea, thankyou for this video , you've done a good job on it

Had on eof these in the early 70s. Came with an Acos GP94-1 cartridge. Very dull sounding compared with the Ronette DC 284 on the previous GP15 model. No oomph. I changed the cartridge to a Sonotone 9TA/HC which was much better and then changed the deck to a Garrard SP25 with a Sugden Connoisseur ceramic cartridge SCU-1. Huge transformation.

Off topic comment Simon. The Brunswick phono record was made by a diverse company that was also well known for bowling balls and vulcanized rubber.

Wow that's a strange side line making records? Thanks DN

@@SoddingaboutSi Bowling balls were never a sideline market for Brunswick here in the US. Brunswick even made some of the auto-mechanical (nightmare-ish to maintain) machines for the bowling alley market. But you may not be familiar with the American version bowling craze of the 60's-70's. I've used their balls many times in the past. Big into plastics and rubber goods etc.

Hi Simon, How cold is it in your workshop? Any chance for a few more binoculars videos? Your two review videos of the Nikon binos have more than 24000views! Cheers, Peter

It's about 15ºC at this time. No binocular reviews for a while. Might do some in the summer. Any requests?

Pity a magnetic cartridge not available at the time of manufacture, step change in quality. Love the chassis layout. I had a Bush Monarch which had an electrostatic speaker to supplement the main speaker which gave reasonable sound. Built a second channel, first time I heard stereo sound!.

I have noticed some ceramic cartridges sound really nasel or all top end. I'm sure that the little transfer bridge where the needle sits goes hard over time, its bound to have an effect. Ceramic cartridges seem low quality in comparison to magnetic pickups. Just my jibbering opinion lol.

I think all ceramic cartridges seem to sound that way even back in the day at least thats what I found with my first Philips record player I used to record all my records from it via the tape out which I later found was just a direct feed out from the cartridge seemed all top end and no bottom to it

@@thehappylittlefoxakabenji8154 I think they did throw a few R's and C's on the amplifier input, but it was never right. It needed an amplified bass/mid/top circuit with three presets to twiddle about with :-D But lazyness or simple lack of interest stopped me bothering, Yep lazyness lol.

GarrardAT6 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJy4gKR4nbqUY6c) has an interesting video comparing an old Acos GP96-1 cartridge like yours to a BSR cartridge in a Gondolier. Just as with your Hacker, the cartridge makes all the difference. Thank you for an interesting video, Simon. Regards, David.
