Great video. As a Sasquatch sized fella myself- I’m a huge fan of the raised garden beds. I have one that is 4 feet high I use for strawberries. I don’t have to bend at all- plus it helps with insect and varmint control. I also put hoops and greenhouse plastic over some of them. Extends my growing season more than 2 months.

Weeding those boxes will be a breeze...just cover them up for a couple of weeks. I like this size planting box because you can also make simple cold frames for them and get an early start on the growing season and carry the season past frost. Consider chunking some useless firewood chunks in the bottom for filler that will retain moisture.

When you fill them up it’s suggested to first add tree cutting/ branches at the bottom. It does multiple things such as releves you of having to utilize so much soil, provides a time release of organic matter for your plants each season so you do not have to continually add fertilizer or additives. The branches break down and extend the life of the soil so you can get more seasons from each planter. Over a couple seasons you will add dirt as the wood breaks down but that’s about it. Works wonders

I like being able to control the soil type. For example adding sand or saw dust to the soil to dry it out or make it drain better raised beds are great for environments like I’m in where we when thick clay soil that doesn’t drain. Raising the beds allows me to grow things I typically wouldn’t because the drainage. Having it raised I can do 1/4 saw dust, 1/4 sand, 1/4 my local fill and 1/4 topsoil. Mix well and I can purpose my soil and make it usable.

I built my raised beds shorter a couple years ago and mixed peat, composted cow manure, and garden soil with the screened sandy soil and they grow great, but with the pine, they warp and split badly. With the price of lumber right now, you could probably make a pretty penny with that sawmill!
@andrewjones-productions
@andrewjones-productions 3 жыл бұрын
That is very true. That said, using the sawmill to save on costs for projects on your own farm is equally 'making a pretty penny' also. Regardless, I think Josh made a shrewd investment in that sawmill. Added to that is that it is portable and allows for the potential of doing a little bit of contracting or even just renting it out in the future.

With a framing square there is no reason to use the little plastic square. Let the leg of the metal square hang off the board slightly and push the square up to the board if the boards aren't warped it is easy to align and get a perfect line. You are doing more than twice the effort. Love the extra height. Good for people in wheel chair too.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer

see....I decided that with the speed square (smaller one) there was no need to fight that darn framing square...what ya need to know is that lumber right off the mill isn't 100% square so the smaller one worked the best. I need to invest in a "bigger speed square" ...eventually I put down the big square and just used the speed square

I am a goose, bloody autocorrect. Charring, burning the surface of the timber to preserve it and prevent rot. They use propane and a wand with a broad burner. Check out My Self Reliance. It is the way the Japanese preserve wood Originating in 18th century Japan, shou sugi ban is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used with Japanese cedar in order to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.

Oak is a very durable wood. The farmhouse in which I was brought up is roughly 500 years old at its core and in the 'airing cupboard' (where the hot water tank lives) you can still see the original oak frames which were probably the old trusses of the original roof. Still as hard as nails, although obviously protected from the weather. Incidentally, the walls in the oldest part of the house are not straight by any means and are very, very thick. Wallpapering is a nightmare. The living room windowsill is at least 1 metre deep. Not to mention the door frame between the dining room and parlour (tiny living room) is only at about 168cm (5'6") and the dining room ceiling is as low as 185cm (Slightly over 6') , so Josh and others as tall as him would probably hit his head! (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hill farm farmhouse).

You know, I've been watching My Self Reliance and he scorches anything that touches the ground on his log cabin builds. I wonder if scorching the inside (and bottom edges that touch the ground) would make those more rot resistant. I just looked this up "Charred timber will last for 80-100 years without repainting or restaining. Maintenance is easy, as it needs only a new coat of oil every 10-15 years." Now, I'm wondering why more folks don't do this. Heck, I'd say scorch the whole thing, but then you'd get dirty every time you harvested.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Don't believe everything you see on youtube lol....these boxes will last about 5-10 years but they will rot. They're all natural for sure...heck I might even give it a try to see if that works, but the wood needs to breath and eventually it will start to degrade and rot...that's when I'll just add another layer of boards on the top as it rots into the soil...at least that's my thought.
@RefinerSimilitude
@RefinerSimilitude 3 жыл бұрын
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Yeah, I just know that's a lot of work in those boxes, especially since you made the lumber. There really aren't many options that won't contaminate the growing soil, as you well know. Definitely worth looking into. So much info has been lost from previous generations before, even before the internet was conceived, so most won't be found there even unless there are people like you whose parents taught them and have the ability to share like your pork curing.

My Self Reliance builds for the long haul. Sean is a skilled carpenter to say the least and he's living and working inside the stuff he builds. I'll believe anything he tells me. That being said, the payoff is super long-term. Lumber is expensive, but not as expensive as your time. The Shou Sugi Ban process requires time and materials. Let us know in 20 years if it makes a difference.

Do you have any idea what a white oak 2 x 12 would cost the average guy. Wood cost has gone up 400 percent, Not everyone has a forest and a saw mill. That is some nice wood.

Doesn't matter what it would cost...it was milled right here on the farm my friend. Lumber prices are insane right now for sure!

@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
If I'm paid to do a video I'm required by law to disclose it in the video. There's no hidden agenda here, I had covid, I am a Registered Nurse and I was asked by youtube to help out on a project, interviewing a rural community health expert. That's it...bigger question...why in the heck is everything some sort of scam or hoax? Second bigger question....why aren't you subscribe to Stoney Ridge Farmer? Does it look like I have an agenda other than teaching and sharing my life with folks? If ya knew me you'd never ask this question

Not being critical buddy just trying to help, you should always crown the board, really helps with warping. Crown always up. Those are some really nice boxes bro. I bet this day I'm age with price of lumber you are glad you have the sawmill
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Yessir...I'm with ya...these boards came off the mill 1 day ago...so there is not crown on them. They're "straight as a board" lol I'm sure they'll move with time but I shored up the inside to help prevent movement...they'll most likely develop a bow outward once full of soil
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 3 жыл бұрын
Crowning is beneficial if you're going to place a lot of downward weight on them. The biggest non-issue would be twisting and warping as the wood dries or ages. But it's a high quality planter, not a building.

Why don’t you line the inside of the boxes to stop the wood not rotting so fast.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Lining them will provide pockets of moisture...just like painting wooden fences...the rot starts under the paint because the wood can't breath

Still is not in big box stores. They help out the small guys. They want you to also be able to repair it in house. No sending it off to someone else. They are good tools
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
I totally and wholeheartedly disagree.....Stihl is the most popular brand saw in the world....they have a marketing strategy that I'm simply not a fan of. I'm not an expert, however I see the fixed pricing, they don't sell online and they pretent to be an American made product. They make great tools....no denying that, but ACE hardware isn't a small guy. It's a marketing strategy my friend....Stihl has factories all over the planet....but somehow folks in the US think that they're an American company. They dictate to their dealers what can and cannot be repaired in the dealers own shop...to me that's not freedom. I use plenty of Stihl products...but I'm not fooled by the marketing strategy that pulls at the heart strings of consumers. Ask your local Stihl dealer about what they can and can't do since they sell stihl.....they live in fear of loosing the brand. Don't get me wrong...it's a great product, but ACE is a big box, and so are many of the other stores where Stihl is sold. If you take care of your saw it shouldn't need to go in for service...if it's made good...right?

Your right not all are American made. Ace is more a franchise. Used to work at one for years. Lowes and home depot are big box stores I'm talking about. I never said that they were the best. Didn't mean to upset some.
