We are lucky to get the leaf compost for free! I’ve learned pruning tomatoes makes for a better crop. I also typically pinch off the lower leaves and bury as deep as possible since tomatoes are technically a vine. Makes for a better root base. Wooooooooo!

absolutely and gives the tomato plant more stability. Pinch back as the plant grows! we get "mulch" here in NJ for free from the town also. Its actually almost top soil

I love raised beds. Helps my back. Less weeds, too. As far as tomatoes go, it doesn't hurt to plant the transplant super deep. Roots will grow all along the stem where it meets the soil, which will help the plant take up more moisture and nutrients.

Those vegetables should thrive in the raised gardens. My six inch high raised gardens do very well with flowers - not so well with vegetable seeds. The compost we got at the site had plastic toys, plastic bags, etc. We just needed to dig deeper in the pile. Combined with some composted manure our flowers did very well.

I had to empty & refill my parents raised garden bed a couple of weeks ago. They moved into their brand new house a couple of years ago & they got a raised garden bed. When they built it they took the cheap way out, filled it with Sandy loam & threw a bag of mulch over the top🤦🏼♂️. Dad did try & grow some carrots, tomatoes & some other stuff in it but with no result. So I dug it all out, went down to the local Sand & Metal depot and got a ute load of Premium Garden & Veggie soil. I know where the term “black gold” comes from now. It was steaming when I shoveled it out. I’m confident they’re going to have a ripper of a veggie patch this season.

Raised beds are the way to go in my opinion. Especially in a wet climate like North Carolina can be. The reason I say that is they drain well. So, if you get a lot of rain, your tomatoes don't rot like they might would in a field. Plus for a tall person you don't have to break your back. Lol.

Don't forget to put on that parking brake when getting things out of truck with equipment, save that transmission. Also snip off the lower limbs on tomatoes when planting, they wont produce anything and just consume energy trying to grow.

Do containers if that's all you got room for. Use vertical space as best as you can too. Depending on where its put, an indeterminant tomato in a container that grows along a balcony rail or fence can produce pretty much constantly for a good while without really taking up that much "dirt space". My friend lived in a camper and grew in pots, it worked out great. I think we're all jealous of his saw mill :D
@larryparish59843 жыл бұрын
Screw a couple of 2X2's at each end of your tomato beds & tie some twine horizontally over your plants about 5-6' up. About one line every 18" or so should be good to train your plants to grow upwards. And don't forget to prune the tomato plants of their suckers & low hanging branches as they will suck needed nutrients that should be going to the fruit.

raised beds have good and bad about them, while it's true soil gardening will give more minerals, you can make a raised bed better than soil by adding compost and rock-mineral, and fish pond water, and it's far better than your average thousand acre strip-mine farmers that take all the goodness out of the soil and leave nothing but sand, which then effectively becomes a in ground bastardised version of hydroponics.

Mow it and don't let it seed out
@notsure78743 жыл бұрын
My general methodology is to mow down whatever it is I don't want, then try to get the seeds it dropped to sprout. Let it sprout really good, then kill them all. Then put down a cover crop to choke out any stragglers / newcomers. I use either silage tarps, or a flame weeder in the "die weed die" stage of the process. Be VERY careful if you decide to flame weed, that can get really out of control really fast. It may be illegal in some places, or at some times too. I overhead water before I use it, and make sure any grass clippings / other kindling is raked out, and I keep a sprayer full of water and a good charge in the battery or a water hose is right there ready for action, and pre-pulled out to just beyond the furthest I'm gonna run it. I can't stress that enough, my friend almost lit some woods and an outbuilding on fire flame weeding this year because his hose was just short of reaching where he was, and it was coiled up about 100 feet away too. That was with a handheld too, not even a dragon wagon.

Only problem with your tomato planting 'technique' is that leaving stems/leaves on the ground invites Powderly Mildew and other 'fungus' problems. If they are 'Undetermined' I'd say you need to STAKE them as well. You also will reduce your harvest by not 'pinching' back the 'suckers'.
