Simple Back And Lay Bet Strategy - £5 Per Day Method | Sports Trading For Beginners

In this video, I will show you a simple back and lay bet live on screen. This sports trading strategy of placing a back and lay bet is called scalping. The idea is you just want to take a small profit out of the market each time.
As you will see from my bet here I did not need the horse to win. In fact, once my lay bet was matched I was able to move on from the race and on to another should I want to.
**This example is just an example. If you do this all the time then you will LOSE money, I researched the horse first and you should too! There are many other factors such as liquidity of markets if you want to use larger stakes. Be warned. You can LOSE money on the exchanges just like any other bookmaker.**

I can make £200-300 pw Backing and laying same horse, Backing with Bookmaker and laying on Betfair, majority of my gains come from Betfair (which I can't quite fathom out why!!) None of this hoping your bet gets matched. I have other strategies i'm working on for much bigger gains, which involves backing and laying on same horse on the exchange. The only way to learn is to constantly look at price action. Eventually you get a good idea where price will go.

​@@malcolmwasher9915 Yes you can if your lay bet doesn't get matched. In order to make this strategy sucessful you have to have some reason to believe the horse is likely to come in in price. If you just did this blindly on every single race you would almost certainly lose money.

That’s not scalping. Scalping is taking a 1 or 2 tick move. You’re looking for a swing trade, and by going in-play you’re taking a big risk. No-one is going to make money long-term with that strategy.

I agree, it's very risky yes. 😬 I've since learned the hard way with this. I much prefer scalping 1 or 2 ticks pre race now. Although I have 2 years of data with this, its worth looking at favourites on certain lengths. There are some patterns

The £2 bets might get through the market but as you increase the stakes it's harder to get that money through the market as you start to manipulate the odds. Nothing learnt here. You're guessing the price will match inplay. This is a fools trade. Not recommended.

@OllieWWillie I'd recommend finding hold up horses on tracks that favour front runners in sprints. Lay just before off and green up after a few seconds. That's my bread and butter trade.

It' a good straregy. Obviously you need to do your research, you can't just blindly do this in every race. But if you do your research and find a horse who is known to lead from the front then it can work.

What happens if your lay odds doesn't match? For your example: 4.2 mark...

Then your trade could lose. Or this is where you need to trade out the other side for a small loss and move on. It happens, part of the game. You cant win them all. But, if you only lose a few ticks the other way then you can recover that loss back quicker on the next suitable races.

@JohnBanks1978 What if the horse falls at the first or refuses to race out the stalls ? It's not a trade, it's a bet , hoping to get matched in play. The " small loss " should be taken before the off. Potential small losses can quickly become large losses if you guess in play when not meaning to.

It’s just gambling. You risking £2 to make 40p. You have no idea if the horse gonna have a a good run. Also this is not scalping at all. It’s only a back to lay bet without any strategy involved.

I agree, going inplay is very costly as I've found out on many occasions. I've since switched to purely pre-race and being ultra defensive. A much better strike rate too. I only now go inplay if I've greened up. A long time ago I posted this. Thanks for commenting anyway mate

Not always mate. Check the charts, volumes and also have a read up on sites like Timeform. The favourite is an obvious choice but doesnt always perform as they should!

Please don't post stuff that don't work. No guarantees here if your horse don't match inplay it's a loss of all stake. Not guaranteed if the horse flops backing you lost if a horse is laid and is up front the whole race the lay odds won't dip enough to profit. Please don't do this especially on big stakes you'll always lose in the long run

You just multiple the initial stake by the ratio of the back and lay prices to get the required "green" stake for the second bet.

When you lay first it assumes that the horse will struggle along the way. I think he made his assumptions quite clear at the start. We are just looking for the horse to put in a decent attempt. I think that's more intuitive logic. You might be right though.

@@moneymanifestation9505 Agreed. But that's when you are only taking the lay side. There is a second leg to the bet on the back side. If you net off the winnings on the back side with the liability of the lay side should you loses, you'll realise that if you did this correctly you would at least break even. The same goes if it's the other way round. Win the lay, your original stake covers what you loses on the back.

​@@moneymanifestation9505 With a back to lay strategy you are backing first. The lay bet would only be taken if it was matched. Once it has matched you have an instant win. Therefore the total risk is only the £2, as £2 is the maximum loss. You cannot lose the liability of the lay bet.

If you check out the horse's prior running style, you can sometimes ascertain with a decent degree of certainty whether it's a front runner or a hold up horse. That tells you the price is highly likely to shorten or lengthen respectively in play. That then opens up pre-off back to in-play lay or pre-off lay to in-play back strategies. The real trick is to automate this process through automated parsing of historical race reports looking for various keywords, then use the Betfair API to automate bet placement.
