Really good method to use, brilliant. Just make sure the other valve isn't opening or open when you turn the crank to compress the rope against the faulty valve...otherwise you'll have a bent valve. Great tip Taryl

@@Hjerte_Verke That would be easy enough, just back off the adjustment for the other valve and disconnect the push rod that way both valves would be closed, when finished reattach and readjust both valves. Pretty simple.

You will never bend a valve. Rope is softer than steel. You would also never turn the engine hard enough.

A side valve engine might make that harder. I sometimes put the spring in a vice and compress it but leave enough of the spring up to insert a couple of zip ties. After I fit the spring I cut the zip tie leaving the spring in place.

Hello, you have a good idea with the tool and all. When I was a diesel mechanic, I would use a 5/16 box end wrench to put my keepers in. This also works with a lawnmower as I have tried it. Yeah, use something as you suggested to hold the valves up but a box end wrench with some down force also works well.

I still have one of those really big fat Bonney Forge wrenches. Got a hole drilled in it for the valve stem.. Same thing more leverage. I welded a piece in the end of it because of it's like 1 inch wrench... I did that when I was going to Votech in high school.... my teacher like 45 years ago gave me the wrench... I still have it nearly 46 or so years later. Still works awesome... China can keep some of their tools..

The rope in the cylinder trick is as old as overhead valve engines and works better than any "new" tool. If you want to use air, you don't have to buy a tool. Most quality compression testers have that piece, but the rope still works better.
