Taryl, I am recently disabled due to nerve damage in my back. I have worked my whole life ( about 45 years) most of them at 60 hours and to be unable to provide as I see fit for my family is a painful reminder that I am not invincible. Because of my hours working I had a bunch of neglected lawn equipment. Not having the knowledge to fix them only added to my depression. My wife bless her soul, found you on the" interscreen " and made me watch your videos. Happy to say, you gave me the incentive to "take up a hobby" and learn to fix my stuff as well as some people in town who needed a bit of service. Thank you for your knowledge in a manner that makes it easy to learn. Keep up the good work.

Wheel Horse tractors were just awesome until Toro bought them out. They were still pretty good even after, but not nearly as easy to work on. Probably the best of them was the cast iron Kohler C-160. Sixteen horsepower if single cylinder awesomeness. The engines are rebuildable

I had a JD LX176 where the snap rings that locate that pulley would not stay in the shaft to locate it because the grooves in the shaft were completely messed up. It started making a squealing noise and the pulley had fallen down onto the transmission. I drilled two holes in the pulley and put two all thread studs sticking up one either side of the pulley. Then I put a cross strap between them made out of 1/8 inch x 1 flat strap pinched between two nuts. I could adjust the nuts up and down to make the pulley set where it used to set and the strap was right on the end of the shaft to keep the pulley from falling on down. That was 7 years ago and is still working fine.

Taryl, I was watching the vid on fixing the simple city mower, I have a tip for you I’ve fixed a lot of pulleys and idlers . Those pulleys are two pieces and spot welded together. My tip is to drill those spot welds out with a 1/4” drill bit. They will split apart, and it has 2 6202 bearings in it. Buy new bearings and replace them, then put short 1/4” bolts and nuts back in the spot weld holes and tighten. Try it , it’s a good fix especially for an obsolete pulley.

Hey Taryl I had this problem recently with my 2005 broadmoor. I discovered that this smaller pulley has been working fine on my mower all summer: Genuine OEM Tuff Torq 1A646025810 V-Groove Drive Pulley 4.25" - Kept the same belt just fine, very slight increase in speed. Will let you know if it turns out to be a slow moving grenade pin pull. Also noticed the belt runs deeper in the pulley on the original one and it runs along the outer edge on the alternate one - making a comparable functional circumference for the belt. Love your content, grass rats shred!

I've got a 2011 Conquest (Simplicity). Love the thing... no mower deck, but has a Johnny Bucket Jr. Holy tamole is that little unit slick. I can tote almost 500# of firewood in it. It's got a tooth bar and She'll Dig. The best part... handling the weight in the front is no problem; it's got real, no bs, power steering. I'm talking Danfoss steering unit, cylinder that runs off the Tuff Torq, but still maintains the Tiny steering radius... What a blast. Also, the auto-choke briggs never gives me one bit of trouble. Only thing it needs a larger battery (Batt-ry, Taryll), but they left enough room that the big Yuasa that came with my excavator just fits Exactly in. Love Simplicity... the very last of real true full US made riders. Look at how well fitted those handles were he removed and how the fender pan was thicker/heavier than he expected. The new ones have a full Four Wheel suspension, and a high speed tranny to let you go faster over your bumpy yard. And you can find 'em used for Cheap 🐦. I'm telling ya, those Johnny Buckets are so handy and practical, you won't believe it. No loader arms to bend, you can Slam right into snow, ice, soil. Grab one if you can find one, but remember to mount it to something that can handle it, or just expect to give attention to your lighter machine's front end, or just sacrifice it and get a new one to mount the bucket on. I'm telling you, the tight turning circle with the stout Johnny Bucket is a hoot to use and so useful too 👍 ~

I have the same mower but an 07 or 08 . Taryl next time you do this you can save some time by unbolting the the hydro from the mower. Just support the rear of the mower (engine hoist with straps ect) , disconnect the belt from the hydro pulley and I think it's just 4 bolts and the hydo with wheels still attached rolls right out. ( disconnect the rear neutral arm also I think). We change the hydo oil every 200 hrs and got this procedure down so it's pretty fast. One of the last years with the Vanguard ( Simplicity went with cheaper B&S engines later) so it's a keeper but didn't know about the pulley problem. I wonder if TuffTorq possibly supplied the pulley with there unit. I have 450 hrs on mine , how many hours on this one?

Last I knew, BASCO discontinued that part because it was determined the pulley diameter was blocking airflow to the K57 causing failures. They were substituting a pulley with a smaller OD with the same ID to allow more airflow. Because the new pulley lacked the flanges to keep the belt on, the new pulley is supplied as a kit with a belt retainer. You should call your local rep.

I've found that Briggs changes the part number after so many years to make you think it's obsolete. You have to search for slightly newer models and compare the parts to see if they're the same. Often times its the exact same part with a different number. Briggs is far from the only one pulling this scam.

The solution to this problem I chose was drilling a hole in the center of a piece of 1&1/8 flat stock drilled tapped the out put shaft for a 1/4x20 bolt and welded the pulley to holes I drilled in the flat stock welded thru the holes. I pulled the trick off a half dozen times. The reasons I did that is some of the MTD mowers have that little vent on top of the axles which is needed if they were on fluid on the factory I can put fluid in there. Bad news is most of the time that pulley is right over top of them vents. I have not had one those jobs I did fail. It seems to be a little extra work but I leaned a lesson the first time I got a tractor that was low on fluid it's invaluable to be able to remove that big pulley not to mention of for some reasons you get one back with weeds and clothes line rope wrapped all around the axle and out put shaft. I did to myself after my neighbor passed away nobody came around to cut the grass for several weeks and by that time I was in a rush the morning I set out to cut the grass next door. I never saw or noticed the clothes line was even down in the grass. But boy my mower knew it wrapped around the spindles and that output shaft of the rear axle. it was like the mower did it on purpose.

Sometimes welding is the best fix, those who are concerned about melting the oil seal can use a hose and let a bit of water circulate over the transmission and around the shaft with the help of a rag to retain enough water around the shaft, but do it over a sump, on steep ground or use a tray to catch the water because if you weld over a puddle of water or in the rain you will get nasty electric shocks, with some welders the voltage can be high enough to be dangerous.

When I was a kid I had to change the brakes and clutch on my 86 Toyota pickup. My grandfather towed it down to his buddies house. The guy was a retired mechanic. The only problem was, that he was BLIND. He had a botched eye surgery. My grandfather said he's gonna help you, but you are gonna do the work yourself. Then my grandfather drove off. Lol That man would touch a bolt head and tell me what size to grab. It took two days, but we got it done.

I have a similar design pulley system on my John Deere (ish) mower. The rear drive pulley will always be running at idle, use your parking brake to stop wearing down that pulley and belt! I'm pretty sure it's in the manual. I bought mine used so I didn't have the manual, I had just realized a LOT of driving components were running at idle unless the parking brake is engaged.

Go to any industrial parts store and ask for taper-lock hubs and pullies. Virtually any combination of shaft and pulley size can be put together off the shelf. I use them almost exclusively on John Deere mower decks. Nothing new about them, they've been around for decades. This application would have been perfect.

Had it shipped here no problem and now it's sitting in the box in my shop. Hopefully I'll never need it but I'll be damned if I give up my mower because I couldn't get one, you lit the fire in my --- to do it. lol He said he can still get them yet over there. A lot of the problems with getting parts these days is one, planned obsolescence, where manufactures don't expect equipment to last more than a few years, and 2, manufactures making so many new models or redesigning equipment, necessating early retiring of parts to allow room for new parts for new models. Years ago, mowers didn't change much from year to year, many using the same parts, so it was easier to stock replacements.

I had a old Snapper with Briggs 5 hp quantum, given to me, it would run, but carb was all gummed up even after cleaning it it leaked. but did run. carb was discontinued , I ended up retrofitting a B&S Primer style carb from a 6.25 Quantom engine on it. and with a little bendage of some metal around the carb to accommodate the differnt carb. and throttle cable removed and new Filter box for primer style, it worked. All parts I had on hand used parts from scrapped mowers.

I don't see how you begin to have a small engine shop without at least small machine shop capabilities. Back in the 80s I bought a small Taiwan lathe and a tabletop mill, bandsaw, surface plate table, valve refacing and cylinder boring machines. Oh - and 5 different welders and a plasma cutter. Our motto was "we got enough stuff to make anything fit anything". Had about 1/20th the parts bills everybody else had, lol.

Yeah. Sounds good and dinosaurs ruled the earth at one time too. You might have had less parts costs but you also had higher electric bills and more time involved In fabricating parts. It takes time to lathe and mill parts to specs and most shops charging $45-$109/hr it just doesn't pay to fabricate unless a part is NLA. I love NLA parts that can be fabricated bc you can charge high prices for them, but just the same as your knee doctor doesn't work on your eyes you'll find repair shops are not machining shops.
