0:41 change engine oil and filter regularly (with conventional oil change it 3000 miles) can extend to 8000 with synthetic oil use the weight oil your engine suggests 1:38 Service automatic transmission (change fluid in the transmission every 30k miles, if there's a filter change it). if you have a later model car then leave it alone 2:18 coolant in cooling system (with conventional antifreeze change it every 3 years or every 30k miles) with extended life change it every 5 years or 150kmiles 3:12 the battery (check it for corrosion, pick up terminal cover and use wire brush to wipe off all the crud, then get can of battery terminal protection spray it all over both terminals to seal it) have mechanic check your battery with the machine once or twice a year.

Hi Scotty, I'm doing all of these things, I'm the guy with 541,000 miles on my '86 Toyota. I just did my battery this weekend, checked the battery and alternator, put some anti-corrosion washers on and sprayed it up, should be in good shape for the winter. I don't know if I'll live long enough to get a million as I only put on about 5000 miles a year lol, but the car runs like a dream, what a tribute to Toyota. not if you do mainly city driving like I do. I see guys who go much longer in city driving, and see their engines falling apart when they reach 100 thousand miles from internal engine damage. the manufacturers now suggest changing the oil less frequently, but have done nothing to make the engines any different. Since their warranties are long gone when the engines do wear out, they really don't care. Planned obsolescence is not a myth.

1. Oil & filter. Fully synthetic (3x to 4x cost as reg) 2. Leave Transmission alone 3. Use extended-life antifreeze (5 yrs/150k miles) only $3 more than regular stuff. 4. Check battery terminals for corrosion and if so, clean with wired brush and spray with battery terminal protection spray.

Scotty Kilmer...you are awesome! I just posted this on Facebook to spread the word on your videos. If anyone wants to learn basic auto maintenance: this guy Scotty Kilmer is awesome. This video pretty much covers everything that I can do. If I can do this stuff...almost anyone can. Of course, your car might be annoying for certain things...mine requires you to lift the engine of its mounts to change the spark plugs...grumble. For some reason, Subaru cars are great for the home mechanic (they even have dipsticks and drain plugs for transmission fluid...my old Chevy requires you drop the pan...). Have a good one!

Hey Scotty, great vids man and please keep up the good work :-) I have an 05 Ford Mustang and from the 40yrs+ you have been working on cars, I have no doubt you have seen many of these mustangs come through your shop. The gauges in the instrument panel went out one by one and I replaced the actual motors on the back but calibration is the real issue. I followed the online instructions but they will not stay calibrated. After taking it to a shop, they told me a dealership can calibrate it. At the dealership, they basically wasted 2.5hrs and charged me 100 bucks and then told me I needed the old instrument panel so they can use it to calibrate it...I had already told them I replaced the gauge motors myself. A replacement panel will run over $500. I found an online person who has done dozens of repairs and calibrations for $100 dollars but I am unable to be without a car for that long of a period since driving around with no instrument panel is just insane. Is there any way I can correct this problem myself or am I stuck going through with this service he offers? This second question is about coolant. I have never replaced the coolant since I have bought the car used in '09. I recall topping it off a few times. Is it much like changing the oil? Where does it drain out? Thank you for your time and expertise. I am hoping to learn more about maintaining my car. I also have a one of thick maintenance manuals I have bought years back but it is misplaced at the moment. Online is help from forums are pretty good for the most part but I am weary after the whole instrument panel fiasco, thus, I am seeking out your help Scotty :-)

Mick Kennedy True, only fluid you check while hot is Transmission fluid. Checking it while cold will give a false reading because a lot of fluid will go into the torque converter when cold.
@vermili01387 жыл бұрын
Well, some tranny dipsticks will have a "cold" level and a "hot" level, but yes when hot it's much more accurate.

Your videos helped me figure out what was wrong with my car and I was able to fix it without going to a mechanic! Amazing!! And I don't know nuthin' about cars!! ha! THANKS SCOTTY!!!

I have to disagree with the never-changing-transmission fluid thing. I know manufactures these days seal them for life and say they never have to be done, but its stupid. I own a 2002 Volvo V70XC, with a 5-speed automatic transmission built by Aisin-Warner, who also do the transmissions for Toyota. The owners manual in my car recommends that the transmission fluid never get changed unless you do alot of towing. Its at 116000 kilometers and I don't drive it because the transmission is dead. Why? Because the fluid is black and clogged up the valve body and killed it. When it gets rebuilt, I will be returning to the old 50,000km change rule. Maybe even more often than that.
@pocketsjuicy34447 жыл бұрын
Jay Kenneally But the point is, if you bought it used out don't know if it was changed ever, so you run that risk of pulling the dirt out of crevaces and ruining it, so holding out to replace it if it does break is a better option than ruining it anyway right now

WARNING TO TOYOTA/Lexus OWNERS: SCOTTY/THE DIPSTICK WAS WRONG! I called Toyota today, because my Lexus was shifting badly... My dipstick has the same "No need to change atf sticker", They told me the dipstick is not correct and told me they recommend you change the transmission fluid at 100k or 30k with conventional fluid. The lifetime transmission fluid is only an advanced synthetic, it is NOT lifetime. You WILL blow you transmission if it is not eventually replaced. Replace the fluid and filter (yes, I said filter too! Contrary to popular belief, this transmission system is not completely sealed)! $50 bucks every year and 30 minutes of labor is better than wasting an expensive transmission!

@rockslide48027 жыл бұрын
Ian is absolutely right. There is NO such thing as "lifetime" transmission fluid. Toyota said that about our 2008 RX350. The WS "World Standard" fluid turned brown somewhere between 50,000 to 60,000 miles -- too late to have caught the problem early if we had stuck with traditional service intervals. There is also the difference in fluids for different model years. Check for the exact fluid for your make and model. To change the transmission filter you need to drop the transmission pan. That is more involved work but its worth it to clean the pan and the magnets, drain more fluid and change the filter. As for coolant the same caution is advised. Older model cars require the fluid that needs to be changed every 3 years. Using the newer fluid in an older model car may damage your cooling system, unless it's designed for the new fluid. Same is true for transmission fluid. I like Scotty's videos but sometimes he glosses over things too quickly -- like NEVER opening a radiator cap without first checking that the radiator is COOL to the touch, and the need to use a rag to cover the cap when removing it and also wearing safety glasses. People have been scalded when opening a HOT, pressurized radiator.

What are conventional Engine oil btw?Plus what's the difference between an ordinary engine oil and conventional engine oil?
@joshn9388 жыл бұрын
Conventional engine oil is derived directly from petroleum. Synthetic oil is developed artificially in a lab from modified petroleum compounds and other chemicals.. There are "Synthetic blend" oils as well that are a combination of Conventional and Synthetic.
@nadirwaziri52948 жыл бұрын
Thanks but which one is the best??For engines performence.?
@joshn9388 жыл бұрын
Nadir Waziri Synthetic is the best, lubricates better, breaks down less quickly, and you can go longer between oil changes. The downside is it costs twice as much as regular oil.
@justinp89468 жыл бұрын
Josh Nixon go to Walmart for oil, lot cheaper
@joshn9388 жыл бұрын
Justin P. I usually do! Still more expensive. I use Mobil 1 extended performance synthetic 5w-30 and usually get 7,000 miles to a change(not the 15,000 miles advertised, but I drive in a lot of city traffic) and it's about 9 bucks versus Mobil 1 conventional for about 5 bucks a quart. 20 extra dollars per oil change is a lot less expensive than a new engine.

@charlescarr39097 жыл бұрын
Lance Tech im not scotty but if your not changing your oil every 3000 -5000 miles Scotty stretches his to 7000 your going to need a new engine or vehicle a lot sooner.
@Vanguardkl7 жыл бұрын
Mobil 1 extended has a guarantee on 15000 miles. They guarantee it with a manufacturer liability clause, so they'll pay you if anything goes wrong. Other synthetics you can go for 10000. 90% of people are stuck to the 3000 mile myth so forget about them and ignore. 3000 myth comes from the time they used to use castor oil as engine oil.
@timetryp4226 жыл бұрын
Doc - exactly - how to prove it. That guarantee is worthless.

i really wish there were more honest mechanics around my area like you. The only ones i can trust dont speak a lick of english, or constantly smoke cigarettes in my car during test drives. Iv gotten tired of paying a mechanic that is trying to get me to do more than what i need to just to get more money out of me, so i started learning on my own. The internet is a wonderful place for learning. So far iv saved a lot of money. I just saved about $1200 in repairs after an accident i had all because i decided to fix my car myself.
