Part of me thinks that to eliminate the 1/2 flipping on the falling edge, that you leave that in place, but the 1/1 output to 'use' outside of the module should be inverted. A variation on this would simply be to make the module wider by enout to add a row of inverted outputs for each divider. Then the person using it can trigger off of whichever level they need for the effect they are looking for.. Yeah, some would want led's to, but simply tagging the column as inverted would reduce the part count.

Yep! Another row with inverted would be nice aswell :) I am working on an Arduino based counter/divider which will do this much simpler... Thanks!

@ My thought here was to use an interrupt pin to drive an ISR that increments an 8 bit unsigned counter (if you can see a need for 16 bit, that may be an option.) A second interrupt pin with ISR to reset the counter to zero or all 1's. Then use specified pins for 1/1, 1/2, 1/4..., that go into output buffers for the jacks, and to drive an 8 channel inverter for the inverted pins. The ISR should operate on the rising That however is an arithmetic. To do this as a musical I would expect that you would have to set a flag with the first ISR (these should be as close to 0 clock steps as possible) then in the main loop walk through the bits to work out which bits need to be flipped. That is where I run into issues mentally keeping track of what the process is. At that point it simply occured to me that the 4024 you are using here is actually doing everything, except working off the up trigger, and simply inverting the first bit at the output would cover that for the rest of the bits. But hey, I'm raw new to the Synthesizer scene. Curently 3d printing expandable eurorack modular case parts, and have bought most of what I need for a decent Behringer Series 100 synth, and building some of the really simple kits like the passive multi, and passive mixer. My major interest at this point is to get into a polyvoice platform, so looking at your miaw 1.3 oscilator, or possibly based on Moritz Klein's DIY VCO video set. I think it's using the same chip you used for the Miaw 1.1 video, but he's got it controlled via a VC circuit instead of a single pot, and has it working with a temperature controlled element to help with stability. That said, the solution using a collection of 4046 chipas possibly with onboard mixing to reduce the number of audio outs, has some appeal. I may have to make use of an Arduino to do the MIDI to cv and gate outs. Then I can check whether the pwm inputs for CV work too I guess, or find a dac bay which I think is going to start getting expensive. One day at a time, and this taking far too much of the time I should be spending looking for a new job. Thank you.

Wouldn't using a PNP transistor instead of NPN on the output stage work to invert the output? (I have no idea what I'm talking about, just curious)

I call it just 8-bit counter, because that's it. Maybe need to start call it clock divider then. Can get nice beats with it.
Жыл бұрын
Well in a modular setting and as a module it can be called a clock divider at least. But yeah the chip itself is an 8 bit counter. It’s all about context. 😉

I'm a real beginner but regarding the PHOBo schematic, wouldn't the flip flops be halving the clock signal. It reminds me a lot of devider circuit for crt sync generator. Anyway really enjoying this series keep up the great work.

Just what I needed. Thank you! I went out and whilst at the electronics shop, bought two 16 chips. One is a 4040 and the other a 4020. Which one should I use? One of them has ×8 divider in its specs. I do not have dropbox so will have to think of another way to print your redrawn schematic. Thanks again for a great video on how to save ( a lot) of money. And its FUN building stuff.

You should be able to access the Dropbox folder without an account. As for what to use they seem to work both? I am working on a more musical divider using arduino so you know. But build this anyway. It is a good learning experience. :)

Hello Kristian. I have now almost built the clock divider using the schematic you kindly provided. I used a 4040 IC and adjusted the output pins accordingly. What is troubling me is this. On the schematic there are rectangular red boxes which indicate the clock in, reset, and the other P outputs. The boxes are marked as P. I cannot figure out where the pos and neg ( earth ) is on these boxes so cannot complete and test the unit. I will greatly appreciate your help. Maybe you could do a quick drawing to enlighten me? Thanks in advance!

@@petercane6376hi again each p is a pin where the tip of the cable/jack should be connected. So the signal in. All the ground lugs of all the jacks should be connected together and then connected to the ground of the module. That’s it. Let me know if you have further thoughts. :)

Thank you Kristian. I have all the little P boxes as 3.5mm mono sockets. The clock cable goes to the synth clock out. Where does the reset cable go?

Hey Kristian! Long time, no talk! Been working on some other things, I'll go over in another post sometime. Anyway, starting to look over these "Phase 2" builds and went to the schematic link. It doesn't seem to work :(. Might be on my end, but it seems the whole emiz instruments sight is off? Anyway, please let me know if there is another way to get the schematic you used. Thanks, and take care!

Is it possible to do a similar circuit with the CD4040? I think the only big differences is that there are more outputs on that IC.

Yes. As you say the only difference is the amount of outputs.

Any problem with using a 4040 chip instead of the 4024 and just using the first 7 divisions? Having problems finding the 4024. Thanks! (And, the link doesn't seem to work :(

I have a technical question about this schematic if anyone could asnwer me because it will help me learn better circuit design: I see that the inputs all have an op-amp on the inputs and transistors on the outputs to drive the outputs... BUT when looking at the datasheet i see that the chip has both buffered input and outputs. so i'm wondering why would one need to add those OP-amps and transistors? couldn't one just connect directly the inputs to the input pins (with ar esistor and a diode (for negative voltage protection) and just have a basic output jack on the outputs? with a resistor as well? i feel like this circuit is overkill but then again i dont understand the need for all those extra parts if someone could explain it to me that would be greatly appreciated

OH i posted this on the wrong video, i meant to post it on the logic gates video, but it still kindof applies for this ciruit as well
4 жыл бұрын
I read it as it was for that video. :). So basically you are correct that you can just connect everything into the chip. BUT if something out of spec should be connected the chip might break. So therefor I have understood that this is how it “should be done” I also think it is a bit overkill but sooner or later you get to the point of “better safe than sorry” sure it’s a cheap chip and it’s just to replace it. BUTif you are a muscician getting to a new venue or even worse in the middle of a gig and the chip breaks... well.... Also the opamps on the inputs are made as voltage comparators so the inputs react on everything over 1v so it has a bigger reason for being than just buffering. Hope that helps a bit. :)

@256k_ 4 жыл бұрын
@ yeah that actually makes a lot of sense. i figured it would be some sort of protection level for the chip. it might also help have its behavior more stable i guess... I'm working on a few designs of my own all based on 40xx chips and it's cool to see other circuits and compare what i came up with and to learn from others what are the "best practices" and start using them for my own designs as well. thanks for the reply!

Instead of using 8 individual output transistors, you could use a couple of MPQ3904 (quadruple NPN transistor array) www.ic72.com/pdf_file/m/184636.pdf
