You can add oxide or colourant to the cement (it was cement, not concrete - which has aggregate or stones in it). If you'd used oil on the inside of the bucket - even spray and cook - I dont think you would have had to cut the bucket and could re use it.

Watched you in a video with April. Give her props!! lol.. Next time you make this, oil the inside of the bucket and it will pop right out after several hours. Also, rather than beating on the side to setting the crete, build it on top of a table and use a orbital sander under the table to get rid of the air pockets. Just my .02 . ;)

great video, erin. unlike most DIY vids, yours are concise and straight to the point, without the typical three-minute prologue of narcissistic rambling. your vids are second to none. you rock. one question, though... why did you remove the concrete form tube--since it won't be seen--as opposed to simply cutting off its end? was this so you could seal the interior concrete, which, i presume would last longer than sealing the cardboard/paper material? grazie, michael.
@MakerGray4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Michael! I really appreciate it! Good question re: the tube. Really, the only reason was to have one solid concrete piece, free of cardboard, etc. I made one of these to go outside and the cardboard would eventually mold and get nasty. But I don't see why you couldn't leave the tube in place if the concrete side table is free from the elements. Up to builder preference :)

@@MakerGray Thanks, Erin. And I apologize in advance for what may now be an endless series of nagging questions. Really, though, in the era of a pandemic, with this much rare free time on my hands, you should have known better than to answer so quickly ;).

Could you make this in a styrofoam cooler for a rectangular shape. I know it won’t be smooth and that’s fine. Thought of using cooking spray to help it release and prevent small pieces from sticking.
@MakerGray2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. As long as the styrofoam is strong enough to hold the form, might work!

Looks great. And ideas on how to scale up?
@MakerGray3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Scaling up would be so rad. You'd just need to find a bigger container for the mould. Otherwise, the steps would be the same.

How much concrete did you end up using for this project? I'm planning to make some cylindrical coffee table legs from concrete that will be hollow in the middle as well (the final walls will be 2" thick because I'm using a 10" tube and an 8" tube inside). There will be two legs, each 15" tall so it seems like the amount I'll use for 1 leg will be similar to what you used to make this table!

If you wanted to leave the tube inside, could you cover both ends, or would the weight of the concrete break it? I ask because I want to use my planter as my mold. However, I don’t want a giant hole in the center of the top.

Also, great tutorial!

I *think* it should be fine to leave the tube inside. The concrete should be cured enough to not crush it (if i'm understanding correctly haha). Thank you so much and enjoy the project! It's a good one :)

This looks amazing and appreciate the conciseness. ! I’m working on a similar project and struggling to figure out what type of concrete mix to use. What type of mix and brand did you use here? Thanks so much!!
@MakerGray4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm pretty sure I just used the standard Ready-To-Mix Quickcrete from Home Depot. Nothing fancy and it worked great.

Is there a way to get it out of the bucket without destroying it?
@MakerGray2 жыл бұрын
You might be able to oil the inside of the bucket to help it release. Worth a try!

What kind of paint did you paint it with?

No paint, but I did use a waterproofing concrete sealer! I have it linked below for you, or here is a quick link: amzn.to/2uZXsIm
