Yes exactly, unfortunately I feel like the top veneer layer keeps getting thinner and thinner as time goes on probably due to cost. Old plywood used to have a nice thick layer and these days it tends to be paper thin

Is there something else we can use if we don’t have a crown stapler? Can we use pocket holes on both sides, or would we have to countersink screws to make the butt joint? Would a brad nailer not be strong enough?? Rookie here, thanks in advance!!!

I think most of those options would work great! I would say any form of screw (pocket hole, butt joint, ect.) doesn't necessarily need glue but if you used a brad nailer I would just make sure to glue every joint and I think it would be plenty strong enough! The other thing that's a nice trick is to use pocket holes, but when you align everything, pop a couple brad nails it to hold the joint together before installing your screws.

I think you could use them for both sides, just makes sure you stagger the pocket holes, that should ensure they screws don’t run into each other. The only reason I used pocket holes instead of Brad nails for one side is because I was able to get my nailer in there to nail the butt joints but couldn’t for the other side. Pocket holes on each side will surely be stronger!

This is made out of 3/4" birch plywood that you can find at pretty much any lowes of home depot 😀

Great build. Trying to determine what the proper width for each locker would be to allow for a hook on each side. Could you tell me how wide the unit is? I can divide it by 4.

Thank you! The lockers are 4 feet wide and the cubbies are 5 feet wide. That way the width of each locker and cubby is just shy of a foot

Great job! I liked this. Looking to build something for all my shoes and boots. Since you welcomed suggestions, one thing I would suggest is with the taller cubby type cabinet for jackets - have the seams of that thin plywood (i think it was Luan) land on one of your verticals. I noticed light coming through in the middle of the cubby where the seam was. Other than that - perfect! Do you plan on doing some edge banding or a finish to the raw edges? Or are they going to paint them?

Thanks Dave! I absolutely agree with that! I thought since they were going up against a wall that the seems would somewhat disappear but unfortunately they are still pretty obvious. You can still notice them quite a bit even without light shining through. And I won't edge band these ones since they wanted an unfinished look to match the other equipment in the gym but I plan on making a fancier version for our house and I will definitely be edge banding and experimenting with finishes! That's for the suggestions!

I made both of them for around $125 total, that includes the cost of glue and a box of screws. I found this plywood at Lowe's for around $45 a sheet so I think the cost of plywood in your area is going to be the determining factor! Hope that helps!

Oh really? I’ve never had any issues! Although I will say I’m not a super nit picky guy when it comes to things being perfectly square and what not. I’ve seen videos where people break down the construction of things with machining squares and other tools to measure the quality of equipment. I think it’s worth way more than what I paid for it personally and it’s never let me down!

This stuff was just labeled as "blondewood plywood" at my local Lowes back when I made this. The quality was amazing, I think it's 12 ply and I believe it only cost $35 a sheet at the time. Ever since I made this video I haven't been able to find it again 😢

Typically Lowe's! I usually shoot for their "blondewood" plywood if I can find it, it's about $45 a sheet and I find it to be better quality that the maple or oak.

All staples and some pocket screws, the backing keeps it from racking so they don’t get much stress. It’s worked well so far!

Let's see, for the construction of the plywood I used 1 1/4" crown staples 18 gauge and to apply the backing I believe I used 1 1/4" pin nails 23 gauge. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. It seems you can only staple in the bottom of the vertical dividers (except for the first and last) correct? Or, do you toenail in the top of the vertical dividers that are under an existing vertical divider? Please help!

Yes this is what I found too! What I did was staple the bottom of the vertical dividers that I could reach and then use pocket holes to secure the top. You don't need a ton of them since the weight of the shelf keeps everything in place pretty well! Hope that helps!

Two things. Are projects like these impossible without a table saw and 2) I've tried screwing into the side of plywood and it failed. Does your wood stay together because you use nails when you go into the sides of plywood?

Yes this is definitely possible without a table saw! I would recommend a circular saw with a good straight edge, you could even buy a long piece of steel from your local metal shop or scrap yard if you don't want to spend the money on a long level. And you're going to want to predrill the holes for the screws into the plywood to avoid splitting. I recommend a tapered counter sink bit, you can probably find one at your local hardware store for under $10
