This is great! I don't know why you don't have more views, I feel like we all struggle with mixing drums and this is a great tip. Thank you!

Thanks! I might have to redo this video in the near future, I’ve picked up few more tricks since doing this :)

Don't forget that even without the compressor plugin, this two-track approach was always going to sound "better" because it's going to increase the volume. Louder usually sounds better to the human brain. You'd need to get "before" and "after" volumes the same, and A/B listen to *that*, to hear which sounds better, or to appreciate the difference.

Yep good point. It's definitely something I'm taking into account when mixing.

This is enlightening. I've been using/experimenting with MT Power Drum Kit. It doesn't have all the features of EZ Drummer, you can't change the kit but it does have a massive library of fundamentals. ...and it is free :) I will now play with compression and see how that effects it.

Definitely give it a try! I use it on the drum loops and stuff like that as well. Just gives you much more options to fine tune your drum sounds. :)

I will have to try this on one of my upcoming songs. I like MT Power Drumkit and think it sounds pretty decent for being free, but I would definitely like to add a little extra kick to them.

Thanks for the tips! Quick question from a novice. Why not just put the compressor on the original drum track and blend to taste with the Dry Mix knob on the compressor? Wouldn’t that basically do the same thing?
@CatPickStudios5 жыл бұрын
Hey! People usually do it this way because it allows you to EQ the two tracks differently and for example send different amounts of compressed and original sound to a reverb. Sometimes compressing a drum track heavily can bring out some unpleasant frequencies and this way retain more control.

@@CatPickStudios Makes a lot of sense! Thanks so much for the help!

Your compressor has a mix knob...was it necessary to do parallel processing when you could have just have blended the signal using that?
@CatPickStudios4 жыл бұрын
The idea to do it in parallel is to be able to control both 'versions' of the drums easily when mixing. I usually also apply some eq and other effects on the parallel track as well that I don't want to have on the 'raw' drum track.
