Having done this many times, Saving the trees for the very last is the best idea. Once everything is done, use a drill bit the same size as the tree base to punch the hole, and hot glue. Way easier than working around the trees.

"I'll cut this XPS foam on my Proxxon table" Wait, is this Jeremy? what's going on? "And base it with chipboard!" All is well with the world :P Nice job! If you need masses of trees this is fine, and just that bit you did of giving then more glue and then adjusting the colors afterwards is enough to make them serviceable. One thing though, the latest Luke'sAPS canopy moss thing he has works wonders to make trees out of those Woodlands Scenics armatures and it's far easier and faster than his previous methods, slightly less realistic than those (so, not the best for competition dioramas) but it's very quick and durable. Still, just spending some bucks for some railroad trees and some basing like you did is far more than enough.

The best way to get trees is to raid craft stores and seasonal shops right after Christmas towards New Year's. I usually get some for like 50~75% off. They're especially cheap when you find the ones not flocked with snow.

I have similar opinions on forest terrain, so this video was perfect for me, I am loving how my copies of this are working out. And...one of your videos was the reason I bought an airbrush, and thank you for that - holy cow does it make it so easy to remove the bright neon color from the cheap trees.

Wyloch is back! Huzzah! It's great to see such a simple, no-nonsense forest tutorial; like you mention, most tutorial folks end up going over-the-top with super-detailed trees that are impractical for a schmuck like me, and really most pre-bought trees are perfectly serviceable compared to the simpler tree tutorials. My biggest concern with pre-bought has always been the size (most are too small for 28mm, and end up looking like baby trees), but all things considered it's a decent trade off for ease of building, and you can always try and hunt for the bigger stuff (like from Christmas village stuff). Anywho, great job as always, and I look forward to more crafting!

I'm with you, Wyloch! Screw realism! It's a fantasy world. I have almost the same grab bags of trees and planned to do pretty much the same thing. We tried them once just out of the bag jamming them into some old rock scatter pcs I have, and the players LOVED it. They add a lot. Who cares if it's "cartoony" or not ecological. Does it look cool?.does it add to the table? Does it provide more for everyone to interact with? Yes to all. If anyone gets nitpicky, just say, "Well, this is not Earth. Nature laws are different here. Now f*ck off and play the game or build your own stuff." Then smile. The smile is important. Love the channel man! You've helped my crafting life tremendously right from the beginning. Now 4 years and counting!

Totally fine if you just want to simulate deep woods for a scene or encounters. Did a similar thing to get quick woodland terrain not too long ago, but I used some cardboard drinking straws to make my trees "modular". Set up a trunk out of a piece of straw that I textured, so I can switch trees as I want or remove them when we need room or the players want to hide in the thick foliage.

Fine work! Those look most excellent. I often use mat board and chipboard for basing - to prevent warping I treat it with a coat of Sanding Sealer on both sides. It gives it an almost plastic-like resilience. Takes about an hour to do both sides and allow them to dry. (Do this outside, proper ventilation, etc).

Great video. I've watched the same vids with those crafters making ultra realistic trees and they are fun to watch but they create a craft block at times. Those crafters are artists with a talent but I'm not. I'm just a crafter with a desire to make terrain for my games. This is why I like this vid (as well as the old standards like BMC and Scotty and DMGinfo). You all teach that there is a difference between reality and believability. That's an important lesson to always keep in the back of your mind.

Wish.com is a great resource for inexpensive trees for tabletop gaming. I recognized several of your trees as being from Wish. I do my bases even faster, and easier: I use MDF bases; I mix up 2-3 variations of green sands (Dollar Store brands), paint PVA on the MDF base, in random patterns, then swirl them in a container of the green sands mixture. Once that dries, overnight, I paint the remaining areas with PVA, and I swirl that in a container of reddish-brown sand, which creates random, grassless, areas in between, and around, the trees. I find it visually pleasing, extremely quick, and extremely easy to create. I use this technique for 2", or larger, bases for figures, as well. Cheers!

i think the true achilles heel here isn't that the trees you made look bad (i think they look fine) but that the answer to "how do i make trees?" you're answer isn't a method or technique, it's a $20 bill. it's not about a cost thing, i really don't like buying off amazon for moral reasons but theres things that they don't have anywhere reasonably close to me. i had to drive 90min to a home depot outlet because every other hardware store had 1in at the thinnest, and i think theres maybe 1 craft store that had model railroad stuff near me.
