Have you considered using this to make modular walls? Like make the walls lock onto the tiles, allowing you more freedom in your tile placement?
@WylochsArmory
@WylochsArmory 6 жыл бұрын
No I have not, for a few reasons: 1. The walls wouldn't be nearly sturdy enough to withstand routine use of clip-on features, which is the entire selling point of this low-wall form factor. 2. It is more finicky to deal with at game time or pre-game time (more parts to care about in your collection). 3. It does not actually allow more freedom in tile placement. The tiles are already fully modular with no compromises needed. The only possible way to further streamline might be if all of your tiles were of the Field style (that is, 2.5" squares with no walls), and then you somehow attached the wall on top, but again, see issues #1 and 2 above...unnecessarily finicky and not very strong.

Suggestions for clip-on features: Wall-mounted shelves, levers or other mechanical triggers, sentry devices (scrying stones or cameras,) runic symbols, ladders, latrines (hey, dungeon residents need a place to go, too,) outcroppings for use as cover in a fire fight, structural collapse (because not all dungeons are built up to code,) plant life (decorative or just vines that can be climbed or may be monsters waiting to strike,) paintings (who says a dungeon doesn't need an interior decorator?) and signs (because no dungeon boss wants his minions mistaking the laboratory for the lavatory!) Those are just off the top of my head.

Dude... beyond epic! This has inspired me to finally make a full set of tiles. I’ve always been a student of yours for good reason. I think I’ll have to add an extra layer of chipboard to the base of my EVA foam tiles because it’s a soft, forgiving material that would give too much loss of tension but I don’t want to give up my removable grass tufts of my tiles. I’ll build these soon and post on your page. Thanks brother! Amazing brain power you have ,Sir!

I think one of my favorite things about this craft is the pioneers (wylock, black magic craft, dm scotty etc.) And that they are not competing for the most popular style. They work together, many of them know each other and they dont tear each other down. I am very happy with the fact that they take the time to not only make a new and innovative idea, but they are also willing to adapt it to others' styles. I just think this crafting community is awesome, good job yall!

Brilliant! You never cease to amaze me by turning simple materials into attractive, functional pieces. I was trying to think of ways to get a smaller room without making specific tiles and am thinking you could do something like the doors but with a pillar that has a floating wall that sticks out from it. From there, it could end in a hollow pillar that you hairclip another pillar and wall section onto. They would be taller than the built in walls, but could do some fun thematic things with it. Will have to play around with the idea.

Ya know, the whole reason I got a 3d printer was to use True Tiles, just added a base to my existing tiles made by your method (and a 1 mm spacer to the ones I 3d printed), because the loose tiles weren't feasible on the table and I needed something to lock them together. Oh, well, I've invested too much $$ into it to change at this point, lol, but this idea is truly epic and makes crafted tiles much more attractive, again. Bravo, sir!

I have been notching out the cardboard and putting magnets in there with epoxy. North 1/2" left of center and south polarity 1/2" right of center on all 4 sides, then corrigation clatting. They "snap" into place as you lay them down. It's awesome if you have the patience to knock it out, and on the hollow sides, you don't even need to notch much/if at all. Just epoxy them in and they sit nice and pretty. Makes assembly at the table 1000x faster. Just something to consider. Love the channel!

Hello Wylock. I have been crafting my own interlocking tiles and I found that a very good material for the connecting clips is from plastic ice cream containers. The square 2 litre or (like I get from the recycling at work) the 5 litre tubs. It is almost the same thickness as the chipboard (a little larger) and being plastic is very strong yet flexible. Also no need to worry about the corners wearing out with repeated use. Cheers.

Man I am going to be able to fix an old set of printable scenery big boy tiles I printed off before the Open Lock version came out. I always hated how they would become discombobulated when I was trying to lay them out and put stuff on them. While I don't handcraft tiles anymore (I print open lock type scenery) being able to go and add this to old pre open lock stuff to make it easier to use is so awesome. PLA can get expensive, and with the average cost of a full set of printed tiles running about 40 bucks, this is an easy and worthwhile fix. Damn your brain is big. Thanks Wyloch!

Well, I already was adapting your 1.25" grid to the vinyl floor tile tiles I ran across somewhere else on KZbin, but apparently I'll be figuring out how to make this work as well because this is pretty genius (I realize I'm a bit late to the game as well.) Only thing I haven't quite worked out is how to use your wall height/style and its associated clip ons with the vinyl tiles, but I'll get there.

Rockin! Out of curiosity, did you find it saved time meaningfully to do it that way? I assume you still made several different foundation sizes so that walls don't introduce error once they're attached? (that is, no walls would be 2.5"x2.5", a single wall would have to be 2.25" x 2.5" and so on).
@carsonduerr2806
@carsonduerr2806 6 жыл бұрын
Essentially, yes. It doesn't save time as much as it makes production slightly more efficient. this way I always will have the tiles I need, rather than being stuck with too many 1 wall spaces and not enough 0 wall spaces for instance. It helps as I'm new to making tiles and my number of finished products are still fairly limited. It also makes storage and sorting a little easier to manage.

I realize this is older, but still really good. I found the raw clip tends to start to fray after a few uses (could be the chipboard I'm using) but I think if you dab the ends with some liquid CA glue (super glue) it would soak in and harden without adding thickness and preserve them longer!

Hello, I'm new to the channel and decided to start with the basics (1-5 and 95). Amongst the several small changes to the construction of the tiles, one of them stood out to me. Originally, in episode 2 at around the 5:00 mark, you say that you used 3/4" chipboard for the wall for this reason: "I did it this way in order to provide two axes of control, and you would be surprised at how strong these walls are." Then, in order to make the tiles fit your sizing, you had to cut the foundation width slightly to make up for the width of the chipboard. In the new method, you could make all the foundation tiles uniform and glue the wall on top, which is much easier than having different measurements for each type of tile (hallway, wall, etc). In the old method, the "two axes of control" make them more difficult to break. Are you sacrificing wall sturdiness for ease of construction? Is sturdiness not generally an issue?
@WylochsArmory
@WylochsArmory 4 жыл бұрын
EXCELLENT question. The answer is, yes, you do sacrifice durability, however over the years and experimentation, I have found it's not been an issue. Use a good bead of hot glue, and hold that wall perfectly still as the glue is cooling. It will form a nice strong bond. Be reasonable when attaching your clip-ons, and breaking will not be a problem. TLDR - I was overthinking things way back in the day.
@avankilsdonk
@avankilsdonk 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you for the quick response! I was mainly wondering if it was a "pick your poison" issue between superior durability and simplicity, but reading your response that it isn't an issue answers that question. Can you recommend any other videos regarding general construction of your tiles? Most of them are about construction of specific items and I'm trying to make sure I have an accurate list of tools/materials to start.

What I do to have tabs always in is make the tabs half the width (or rather I cut them in half). So when you connect two tiles, the tabs slide next to each other. You could do it by making 2 channels per side, but this works just as well. So you can have tabs in by default, and then take them out of the outside tiles. Less work and faster in-game assembly

Hey Wyloch I am building my first batch of these connect tiles. Can you please show a pic of what the base for the curved (like in the video 6:14) and circular(sewer) pieces look like. Thank you
@WylochsArmory
@WylochsArmory 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah so for curved corners I still attach the chipboard wall to the "outside" of the foundation instead of "on top." Like back in episode 006. Therefore the base ("foundation") is a quarter circle with a radius of 2-7/16 inch. (2-1/2 minus the thickness of the chipboard).

thanks for the quick reply...I was meaning on a regular tile you have 4 small squares on the base corners and 1 big square in the middle to create the slots they lock in...what does the bottom of the curved and circular pieces look like in that same regard since they won't fit all 5 of those squares and will have less slots to connect.

5:36 shows the base of a regular tile how does that look for the other 2 types

Oh ok, you simply don't have clips on two sides...since those two sides aren't there. Your spacing of the chipboard squares is the same...the only difference is that the ones out "in the curve" need to be trimmed...they don't have to be exact, since you'll never see them.

First, amazing work as always. I have two questions for you though. 1 - Why the change from double-corrugated to single-corrugated cardboard? 2 - Why go from gluing the chipboard to the side of the tile and having those two axes of control to just gluing it to the top? Were these changes merely aesthetic or pragmatic in some way?
@WylochsArmory
@WylochsArmory 6 жыл бұрын
1) Because I want the total height of the tile's foundation to stay at 1/4". The two layers of chipboard are 1/16" each, plus single corrugated which is 1/8", gets you there. 2) Because if you attach it to the side of the foundation, you would have to cut a slit for the tabs to go through, which is basically impossible to do with any kind of consistency or precision. It's also a lot more difficult than just creating the "sandwhich" by stacking up the layers of material.

I finally made a field tile using the old method (Eps 1-4) I used poster board for the 1-1/4 and 1-1/8 tiles instead of chipboard like you used, but for a first attempt, I think it came out pretty damn good. But I think I'm going to switch over to this method instead. Not only does it look like the tiles will be more convenient to use (not flying all over the place if someone accidentally knocks into them while in play), but the material is much easier to find. (Really, I have _mountains_ of _single_ corrugated cardboard. Not so much for the double corrugated, though.)

This is a great idea. I'm curious about retrofitting my existing tiles; specifically, my room tiles. Can you show how to make the 30'x30', 40'x40' and larger room tiles have the 'cardlock' Thanks!

This is amazing. One question I don’t think was covered - how do the interlocking sections work on the curved tiles? I don’t think it was covered, and I couldn’t get a good look at the curved side of the wall to see what that layer looked like.

Disregard, I saw a reply to a similar comment about a year ago. I’m still not sure I totally understand the logistics of the bottom layers on those pieces, but I’ll do my best to figure it out.

This is neat. First video of yours i have seen (though i went back and watched nearly all of them now) I have never played an rpg but i kinda want to build a set of these now just to play with. Here's and idea for wall clips...how about some walls? You could do double and triple wide walls that could span several tiles to hold hallways and rooms together. I was also thinking one side could be magnetic so you could swap interior and exterior wall designs on them. I think the neodymium magnets would make for a sturdy enough bond that they would still hold the bases well.
@WylochsArmory

Thanks for watching! I've never done walls because the entire point of the short walls is to help with playability. If you want a feature on a wall, then certainly make a clip-on for it (as I've done in several episodes). But in general, I don't like walls, just my humble opinion.

Do you need to use slightly different tile bases like with the original ones or would this work with 2.5" square bases all around (barring triangle pieces of course)

If you smear a thin layer of super glue across the exposed edges of chipboard it does really well to reinforce it over time. I don’t use the thin super glue, I use medium as the thin is likely to run and drip everywhere. You will end up with superglue on your fingertip, but if you have never had superglue on your fingers then you aren’t crafting right.

Gloves would fix that, as would using a different glue like wood glue or mod podge.

Michael's used to carry chipboard (different brand but same stuff). Then they discontinued it, at least at my store. So I went searching on Amazon and found that stuff. I have used it ever since. There are probably other brands but for the price and quality I have never bothered searching further. 25 sheets that are 12" x 12" will last a LONG time.

Hi Wyloch, and congratulations : your work is amazing. How do you manage the openness of doors with this interlocking solution. You can't switch a wall tile to a simple tile when a door is opened. Do you leave the wall across the way ? Do you have "opened door clip-on" ? Thanks for your great ideas and videos !

Another method to easily remove the paper from the foam board if you’re not able to get the Readi-Board, is to use sticker solver. Just apply it directly on the paper and it will dissolve the glue.

How well does this scale up for larger tiles? I use tiles that includes as small as 2.5 inch square and can go up to 10 inch square (sort of an amalgam of everything I’ve seen done with cardboard and foam).

How does the manufacturing process differ for the corner and rounded corners tiles with this system? Do you still utilize the same 3/4" and 1" chipboard innards for the foundations -- merely cutting through them as needed for the particular corner -- or was it not addressed? I apologize if this is covered somewhere else in the series; I believe I've searched through what I could. I enjoy the vids greatly, and they've been a great help in getting started with creating some visual assets for my game.
