Ninth project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This pattern was designed for a jelly roll but leftover 2 1/2 inch strips will work just as easily!
This pattern does call for two additional fabric for the background and cornerstones. I highly recommend one fabric for the background setting/border fabric and one fabric for the cornerstones to match the main strip color you pick. Look for a tone on tone or small volume print to let the strips be the star of the quilt. The pattern calls for 2 1/2 yards of the background setting and border fabric and a fat eighth of the cornerstone fabric. The finished size of the quilt was 67 x 67" This pattern is easy to enlarge or make smaller! I do mention some alternate color way ideas in the video.
Here is the link to the pattern used in the video, "Quadrangle" by Moda. This pattern is one of the many Project Jelly Roll patterns they have available online for free!
Here is the link to the pdf to print a copy of the pattern:
my.modafabrics...
Here is a link to our video series playlist featuring Projects using 2 1/2 inch strips:
• Projects using 2 1/2" ...
Stay to the end to see finished quilt which includes the pieced binding and see what the backing is!
There is also another update on the 2 1/2 inch scrap bucket situation!
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!
If you don't have leftover strips from other projects to make scrappy quilts, cut up fabrics in your stash into 2 1/2" strips to make the project. No stash of fabric? Head to your local quilt shop and buy a jelly roll or some very pretty fabric to cut into strips! Shop owners are more than happy to help you find the perfect fabric, don't be shy, ask for help if you need it!
Consider joining our Facebook group called "The Quilted Forest Friends". This is the only place you'll have access to exclusive free quilt patterns used in some of our other video projects. It's also lots of fun for members to share their project updates. Here's a link to the group:

My 1st quilt was completely free form , I didn't measure any of my squares or trim them, just made them and sewed rows, I used a twin sheet as a self binding back. and only had 1 dart in the quilt when I was done. Then I watched youtube and learned making each square the same size and trimming and squaring up. Love it as it's a memory quilt and continues my grandmother's quilting tradition.

Hi Shelley, I also love this tutorial. I made a quilt out of the "block of the month" from December 2022. Please keep it up. I am from the Philadelphia/Vally Forge area in PA. I hope to come out and join you guys at one of your retreats. It looks like a lot of fun. My favorite thing is to use/reuse "discarded fabric." It's like getting a quilt for free. My husband has an Aunt who lives in the Davenport IW area- I may have to drive the 4hrs to the retreat after a visit with her. Have a great day.

Beautiful quilt! Thank you for another great scrap busting pattern. I think I will also use this method modified to a 3 x 3 grid to use up my ever-growing stack of 5” squares, maybe with 2” sashing. I make many grandkids’ quilts and foster quilts and cut leftovers into 2.5” strips and 5” squares. The scraps then become more grandchild and foster quilts. 😅. So many scraps!!! Looking forward to trying this one out.

Love the tape on the mat!!! Brilliant 🥰. I saw a tip on another channel (MSQC) to stack the blocks you are going to sew…as in, you have ten of the same blocks to sew, stack them next to your machine and sew them up assembly style which also allows you to double check design placement.
