Thank you for another wonderful video. Quick question, what is the best way to ‘season’ a new plate so that inks don’t bead up on it?
@IngridBlackburn2 жыл бұрын
Great question Barb. Unfortunately inks will always bead up on a gel plate. Anything that is high water base will. Inks like oxides will work better than traditional dye inks. Glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching. 😍😘🎨

I learned so much today. I see you use heavy body acrylics, that’s cool. Some artists say only golden liquid acrylics. What do you think?
@IngridBlackburn2 жыл бұрын
I always tell people to never restrict themselves from trying products. Anyone that tells you only this or that to me is trying to "sell" you something. I love certain products, but people like different things. There are LOTS of products out there that work for gelli printing. Golden liquid acrylics are certainly great, but they are expensive. I use a lot of heavy bodied acrylics, in addition to some fluids. It all depends on what you like too. I say, experiment with different kinds and find YOUR thing. :)

Which paints de you consider student versus artist brand?
@IngridBlackburn2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Many brands have student grade paints and artist quality paints that are definitely more highly pigmented. When you see bigger art stores develop their own line of paints, rarely is it an artist quality - at least that I've found. Jerry's Artarama Soho brand is one that I use all the time. They are great quality paints, and perfect for gel printing, but not like say Senneliers artist level acrylics. Price will most definitely reflect that too. Hope that helped a little. If you're just getting into it, try Dick Blicks line, or Jerry's Artarama. Especially when they have a sale. You can nab several colors that way at sometimes 50%+ off.

My gel plate came with bubbles in it. Is there a way to get rid of them. They come out on my projects and it’s kind of a bummer seeing how great some of my prints come out and then you have this bubble right smack where the most beautiful part of the print. I’ve gotten a larger one since but the smaller one is perfect for what I do. 11”x5.5”
@IngridBlackburn2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kerry! I know exactly what you mean. How do you store it? Tell me precisely what you do, lay on it, etc. Also who is the manufacturer.
@kerryloper61422 жыл бұрын
@@IngridBlackburn Hi Ingrid. I store it in one of Tim Holts metal containers for gel plates with the original covers it came with you know those plastic things that you take off. It is Ranger gel plate came with a 3 pack
@IngridBlackburn2 жыл бұрын
@@kerryloper6142 start putting a piece of copy paper on both sides. It'll cloud, but still work perfectly fine. The reason you have bubbles is you're getting air bubbles between the surface and what it's touching. They'll smooth out over time. Lay your copy paper on it so you have a good bond between it and the plate. A gel plate will conform to shapes and things pressing to it. Give it a bit of time. If you have ranger plates, then good chance they're from China. So not as high quality as say gelli arts. But, this should fix your problem over time. If you ever feel your plates need to be reconditioned, use baby oil. You got this Kerry! Hope that helped. 😁😘🎨

Near the end when the paper was tearing… more and more paint was stuck to the plate. I have tried everything and do it is thick and stuck.
@IngridBlackburn3 ай бұрын
Hey there! Here are some thoughts on this problem: When you're gelli printing, you're adding moist product (paint, ink) to the plate, then a dry surface (paper). There's a tug of war of sorts between the two surfaces - the plate (which is clingy) and the paper. The moist paint breaks down the fibers in the paper which is absorbant - this weakens the paper. It is also what allows the paint to become dried to the paper - making it part of the paper (one way to look at it). If it's wet, the clingy gelli plate will hold onto the paint strongly, and since the paper is weakened, leave paper behind. Essentially pulling it to it. But if the paint dries to the paper enough, when you pull the paper, it takes (lifts) the paint from the plate. It's won the tug of war. When you first put your paper down, feel the back of it, it'll be cool - that's when it's wet. Give it a few minutes, and see how it warms (dries). This does not happen uniformly, it's not uncommon to have wet and cool spots. Be patient and allow it to dry. If you used a lot of paint - it can take a long time to dry. Keep at it, it's about practice, getting reps in and through experience the feel of the right amount of pain, and what works and doesn't! You got this. ❤️😁🎨
