I'm all about comfort food, and today I made my favourite hamburger soup, which was delicious! I've been working on cheesemaking and made a batch of quark. I also got into the greenhouse and fed my bees. I hope you enjoy coming along with me!

I grew up eating cornbread with all kinds of soup. My hamburger soup has either ground or chopped beef, loads of onions, potatoes, carrots, canned tomatoes, whole corn, broccoli florets and stems, sea salt, black pepper, ground peppercorn medley (black, white, pink and green peppercorns), dried minced onion, garlic powder, bay leaf and beef broth. Have given out this recipe countless times, and everybody says it never tastes as good as when I make it but it's still really good, so I just tell them they either didn't hold their mouths right when they done it or they didn't add enough love. Have made this with canned carrots, potatoes and corn and it's still good, but always tell folks not to drain the nutrients away, always add them to your soup, and you still need to let it simmer for a bit to let the flavors meld. Since I was a youngun we've always reserved the liquid from canned vegetables, freeze it and later add it to soups to get that extra nutritional value, but it sure does make it more tasty too. The peppercorn medley is the secret ingredient here, you'd be surprised what a difference it makes, I think it's more of the pink peppercorns that makes a great tasting soup. Not a fan of beans in my soups, so broccoli is my go to green vegetable, and I even save broccoli stems from other dishes and freeze them to add to soup later. Couldn't get me to touch broccoli with somebody else's hand when I was a youngun, now can't get enough of it. With the broccoli though, you want to add your stems early on into your soup, then add your florets later or they'll disintegrate, done that before, also already added them to the soup and had to keep it warm for a good bit while waiting on folks from out of town to show up, it turned out to be a good thing because some of the younguns didn't like broccoli, but they never knew it was in there, until later, haha. Had friends over for soup and cornbread one night, and the mom said her son didn't like onions, it's a texture thing, I know because I was the same wat as a small youngun. So I grated the onions instead of chopping them, the boy didn't know, loved it, the mom told him it had onions in it, the boy refused to believe it until I showed him some itty-bitty pieces of ground onions in there, and to this day, some twenty years later, that boy/man child, still wants grated onions in his soup, go figure.

I used to hear stories from people who lived through the depression about bay leaves. They weren't simply tossed out when they were taken out of the soup like we do now. They would wash them off and set them in a little dish on the back of the stove and keep re-using the same ones until they got pale and flavorless.

growing up this was the only soup we knew, as soon as cold weather hit my mom would make homemade veggie soup with hamburger she would make a big pot and freeze some and she even canned it, We had it all winter long, this soup is the best, we eat ours with saltine crackers or peanut butter n jelly sandwiches she always used apple or apricot jelly sometimes she would make grill cheese but we prefer the peanut butter n jelly

I've been watching your channel for several months now and especially enjoy your gardening tips. I have been purchasing a midrange potting mix for years to use in my container garden and my plants do okay but I struggle with blossom end rot and other nutrient deficits. So this year I bought a high end organic mix specifically for container gardening and so far my plants seem much healthier.

One of our family laughs is…. My son in law called from town and asked “ do you have any babies?” I said” l don’t understand the question, I had two babies”. No he says , Baileys, … so I climb up on to a chair and am looking through the liquor cupboard. “ what are you doing” he asks. Looking for Baileys, we have Kallua but no Baileys. By this time he’s laughing so hard he can hardly talk. No no no BAY LEAVES! That’s our bay leaf story.

Good wet Sat morning….the other day I listened to one of your vlogs and you mentioned not liking canned chicken….I don’t care for the texture either but I know when the time comes we will accept what we have to eat. I drain my chicken and cut the shreds up and put it into soups, casseroles, on top of salads, chicken salads, stuffed potatoes, using gravy or cheese sauces makes it more palatable, good on grilled cheese chicken Sammie’s… If you sautéed it until slightly crispy that helps the texture. I’ve dehydrated it and my hamburger….the hamburger I leave dried chunkier and it hydrates well in soups and as a add onto a meal when I need more hamburger added. hope this helps….. Our power went out for four days and if we couldn’t have bought gas for the generator we’d have had problems……. We have few full sunny days here where I live in Ohio so I doubt solar power generator would be the answer.

My dad was a police officer and mom a nurse but I was very sick so they worked a lot when I was a child and teen ager. We would go to a wonderful large family daycare for days sometimes. The Scottish family who ran it would make this broccoli and bacon "slaw" that this recipe reminds me alot of. They taught me how to cook and do math and reading,write- all before I got INTO actual kindergarten and for some reason, you remind me of them.

I have a raised bed near the back door and plant it full of greens every Spring (January for us). They are nearing end-of-life because it's getting hot. But, I love being able to just pop out for a big bowl of greens at dinnertime. I've tried following up with hot weather plants (tomatoes, squash, okra), but haven't had much luck. So, I either leave it empty or fill it with heat tolerat flowers. I never seem to get my act together to plant Fall greens in there. Maybe this year!

If you use a lot, herbs are better planted in the ground as companion plants for the vegetable garden, but also keep some containers of the ones you use more frequently by the kitchen. Bonus of the containers is you can keep growing them in a window during the winter. Nothing beats fresh herbs in the middle of winter.

Love your videos and am learn so much from them. Could you show more about regulating the temperature in your green house in future videos? I have a 10x12 diy one with raised beds in it and putting wire shelves above them for seed starts. However, I am SO intimidated to use it due to fluctuating temps and it getting too hot or too cold and killing everything 😬 I'll probably just put one tray of tomatoes out there to test my skills since I have an abundance of them and it won't hurt as much if I kill them.

That’s interesting about the fermented milk products being contaminated by the yeast. If you’re trying to stay away from sugar, you might want to check those dried cranberries, I think they add quite a bit of sugar to them. The broccoli salad looks good, my recipe calls for peanuts as well, and no cheese. Hamburger soup sounds good! My youngest daughter is over in Latvia for 3 months, training horses on a workaway farm, funny coincidence with your daughter.
