Wow! What a great idea, guys! It does my heart good when I see most of the bill fish going back into the water, healthy and whole. It's interesting how the kids are engaged but totally respecting the perimeters and sticking right with you.... serious little sailors now. Good job, folks!

Yah indeed the kids are respecting that dangerous perimeter, but it's advisable to wear PFD to all kids. Coz never knew when they might cross the line, this could be a heard recovery while sailing.

In my experience and humble opinion, the kids should not be near him when he has a marlin on. They’re fast swimmers and many times shoots up from the water, they can easily fly towards the fisherman and spear him in the chest and even landing in the cockpit. Their canopy would be ripped in a second. I think it’s dangerous for him to single-handedly fish for marlins as it’s a dangerous sport and things can go wrong very quickly if you’re not surrounded by a good crew. Especially when in the middle of the pacific with no help. I agree, don’t kill marlins at all. Beautiful fish and mist sports fishing boats are niw resoectungb that and will nit let their clients weigh in fish anymore, the captains can tell the size by just looking at it and they’re just a few pounds off the mark If it has died during a struggle, yeah bring back to the local villages becasue they’ll enjoy it very much. He should have a spike, which kills the fish instantly, then bleed it from the back of the boat. The mess in that cockpit isn’t necessary,

Great episode. I remember when you weren't catching as many fish as you thought you should be catching so you reached out and some of your friends and they explained some things to ya. We grew up in Perth WA in the 70s and 80s. Those years Aussies didnt use many rod and reel set ups. Mostly handlines from boat or beach. It was a blast. Memories I often draw happiness from. You can get excellent handline spools online. I remeber one night as a 12 year old, sitting with my dad and his friend in a dinggy off Rotnest Isl Perth on the inside edge of a reef at sunset. We were hand lining for reef snapper. Dad and his friend had a few beer, the air was like velvet, lots of fish, corny jokes and laughs. Happiest I ever saw my father. Good times. You guys treasure what your experiencing. Early years of a a young family are often the happiest. Life will throw you some curve balls but for now- enjoy!

As far as I know, they are in the Caribbean another channel I watched saw them cross the tail line where they left to sail around the world. That said, they would either be in the southern part of the Caribbean below the hurricane line, or they have arrived in the US. I know their videos are quite far behind and they left South Africa in the Winter, but the other channel I don't think runs all that far behind and they were down below the hurricane line. There are lots of places to explore down there and I don't think these guys are into moving super fast but they seem to enjoy the journey and where they are. That said, fair winds and following seas. Will you be documenting your journey here?

Hand line for the win. I recall as a lifeguard using handline tied and wrapped to a plastic bottle. Line around the front of the foot and paddling on a rescue craft. Rods would have got us into trouble for fishing on duty😂. Only ever done on quiet days of course.

Great info Ben - thanks for the details esp about the 3 sec jump of the lure and distance from the boat - I've never been clear about that. We also found the same with our Atlantic crossing - our handlines were much more effective than the the very costly rod and reels that people think should do so much better! Great episode again!

I was given a Shimano 50A and a beast master rod set up, as a birthday present but also for our offshore sailing. It was $1000 brand new and the whole set up went to the bottom in 3000 ft with a large bull Māhimahi attached. The rod holder failed. At the next port I bought a similar hand line set up from a hardware shop in Vanuatu. Cheap as chips and worked perfectly. But it’s not sports fishing, it’s food catching.

Ben knows. Just following his instructions I caught a couple of nice fish. One thing I can add. Lures don't seem to fool birds. Following Ben's advice I bought the biggest swivels I could find. I also spotted Hawaiian Clips in a store in Taiwan. I don't know a lot, but I find they're easy to use, very strong. You might have to ask for them but they seem widely available. (In Japan I drew a picture and the clerk knew immediately.) One thing I noticed is that there are a couple different levels of fishing. It's a lot easier to find a tackle store with tiny lures and lightweight gear. This is for small fish. Not what you want. Trolling from a boat in the open ocean I don't think you're going to catch small fish. I like Ben's single hooks. If a fish is too big it'll bend the hook. Single hooks don't catch as well as triple hooks, but triple hooks can damage a fish's mouth so much it won't survive if you release it. In Asia I looked for tackle stores in Taiwan, Okinawa, Japan. Google Maps wasn't very helpful. Most stores I found didn't have anything I could use. The best store in Hualien Taiwan had a screwed up listing that caused me to miss it. (I think it's this one goo.gl/maps/aUpX6ZifEHwNQ6J98 But again the Google Maps listing was too vague. I could be wrong. We spent two hours going to the wrong stores. This one was 1 km from the boat.) I don't know much about lures, but in the South China Sea I had good luck with big Poppers (with that scooped mouth. They jump around a lot) and big eyes. Every animal I've ever observed notices eyes. Our luck ran out because we kept running over the fishing tackle until there wasn't anything left. I trolled at about 6 knots 100' (30m). Something else about swivels. You definitely want to use them. At home I have several very lightweight mobiles hanging on monofilament from the ceiling. Without swivels a very lightweight 8 ounce mobile will twist and snap the monofilament at least once every year. With a swivel at least 15 years so far. There's a lot more action on the line trolling behind a boat. Definitely use swivels. In Ben's close up he had two swivels. He needed just one, but the other one wasn't a problem. More swivels more clips I don't think are a problem -- unless they're weak. For the bungee I used a 50 lb exercise band I had with me. The rubber strips I saw in all the tackle stores in Asia looked like dried up rubber, no ends. Bring your own. (In Japanese hardware stores like Cains, 'bungees' are rubber strips, like bicycle tires. They're DIY mostly for truckers to hold down their tarps. You have to assemble your own bungee cords. It can be tricky. We had to lash down our life raft container.) I think if I did the trip again (Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Canada I'd bring at least two full handline set ups with me. I'd have at least 4 lures, two Cuban Yoyos, 400' of strong monofilament. All the clips and swivels. Carabiners (really useful connecting the rig and other things onboard.) I'd also have some flashers. I put together my fishing rig in Taiwan, some of the gear I bought on a wim and it turned out to be useful. Also I'd want to know how deep to troll. In the North Pacific 150 nMiles south of the Aleutians and Alaska, all the way to 200 nM off Vancouver Island I didn't see any signs of any fish. Nothing. Were they deep? Could I troll deeper? Don't know. The birds weren't even around for most of that 4000 nM. I like using the tote to corral the line. I think I learned from Ben that if you're pulling in line you can let it pile up around your feet -- just don't raise your feet. And so long as the ends don't cross, that big bird's nest on the deck will quickly sort itself out just by putting the lure back in the water. Good gloves. I had a pair of insulated rubber gloves. Got a lot of ridicule from the rest of the crew. When it got cold they turned out to be the best gloves I've ever owned for fishing, sailing, standing watch. (My fingers and toes get really cold.) Those gloves were great, and good for fishing. I preferred them over my sailing gloves. They weren't entirely waterproof and the insulation was attached to the glove, so I couldn't turn them inside out so they didn't dry very well. I'm going to get big rubber industrial cleaning gloves and multiple pairs of separate liners. Every pair of 'waterproof' gloves I've ever purchased anywhere in Asia and most I've bought in the U.S. (over the years many many many pairs) were crappy fakes, not waterproof or even warm. I've learned to always bring my own gloves. Underwear? You can buy anywhere. Rain gear, clothes.... I'm 173cm 5'8" average build. In Japan I'm XXL, and the arms are a bit short. I had no problem. If your 178cm I think you'll have a problem. I had two pairs of Japanese plastic rain pants that I preferred to my foulies. They were comfortable and dry. When it was really cold I'd wear them both. The pair with pockets was better. I never needed the bib that foulies have.) My fishing gear was laughed at too. But not for long. I put it together following Ben's instructions in a Sailing Nahoa video and day one caught a really nice bluefin tuna. Seemed almost absurdly lucky. A few days later I caught a mahimahi. Then we started running over the gear. I don't know why so many KZbinrs peel off the skin. Mahi and tuna don't have scales. I leave the skin on.

I've been telling people about 3mm bungy with leader for years, but most prefer playing big game fisherman with rod reel. Don't need a rod on a boat, their for casting the hook out where boats are. Elasticity doesn't rip hook from mouth, they can run all they like, ain't going far, allows time to get sorted to pull (drop sails etc). Even better, tidier, set it up on a diy mounted dropline reel (it in, no tangles, pack it away). Can also make it electric. Flicker sound alert like we did on push bike spokes. Diy your own lures, unless you don't have time out there 🤔Stuff from craft store, packaging from groceries, chip packet, alfoil, soft drink can, bottle tops. Predators want to chase, need to be encouraged, a dog only chases if you run from it. Make it something that gets them turned on, excited to chase, rattles, sparkly, erratic.

Totally agree with you on that. Unfortunately, I witnessed a man drown while scuba diving, and a little girl almost drown because mom wasn't paying attention. In fact, I was rescued from the surf in Hawaii when I was 21. If someone had not seen me, I would have been a gonner. Kids that young need to be below deck or life jacketed and tethered when above deck. No exceptions.

Was always wondering why sailboaters used lines. It seemed more dangerous as I was wondering if you could cut your hands with the lines. But if the fish is on the surface, the drag is not as tough. Boatline will always outfish rod & reel when trolling. Sails stay up. Line lays better in the water. Fish are easier to control, retreive, and put on the boat. Since you have two boatlines, consider adding an inline 8 oz. torpedo sinker two thirds down the cord on one of your two boatlines so the lures present differently and the handline is shorter. Also having a basket to place the line eliminates deck hazzard.

Try Siwash hooks. They are hardened stainless steel. The eye is not fully hardened so you can close the eye with a vise grip or vise. Siwash hooks will not straighten. Reply

Marlin, particularly the Atlantic blue marlin, are endangered, but the swordfish is considered a low-concern species. Both are subject to recreational fishing, which has resulted in regulating their fishing in different parts of the world.
