Its an alright alternative, if you have access to nothing else. I use it in Jars as an alternative to sawdust as its easier to clean and break up (oak sawdust etc creates a thick mass which you cant get out the jar).

In theory they should be spawnable outside the fridge for up to 7 days if you dont take the top foil off. The fridge would likely extend that time but i've never done it.

Is it bad for the substrate if it goes over 170 degrees or is it just wasteful.

For a few minutes or so you will get away with it, but if you leave it for extended time then you are sterilizing the substrate, we do not want to sterilize it we want to pasteurize it. Spawn has a better chance in pasteurized substrate than sterilized substrate under general home conditions.
