Lyrics
When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it's sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it's offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here,
When the Belfast child sings again
(Sinead O'Connor)
I dreamed last night
That my own love came in
He came in so sweetly
His feet made no din
He crept up beside me
And this he did say:
It will not be long, love,
'Til our wedding day
Some come back Billy, won't you come on home
Come back Mary, you've been away so long
The streets are empty, and your mother's gone
The girls are crying, it's been oh so long
And your father's calling, come on home
Come on home, come on home
Come back people, you've been gone a while
And the war is raging, in the emerald isle
That's flesh and blood man, that's flesh and blood
All the girls are crying but all's not lost
The streets are empty, the streets are cold
Won't you come on home, won't you come on home
The streets are empty
Life goes on, Life goes on
One day we'll return here
When the Belfast child sings again
When the Belfast child sings again

This song is one of the powerful songs ever recorded. A Scottish Band from Glasgow, ( Simple Minds),, would be the next best outside of an Irish band to sing about the ""troubles". in Northern Ireland. I am Scots on Dads side and Irish Catholic on Mum's . The joint and mixed history has brought with it a mixture of bitterness , but also wonderful music and shared love of very common cultures. Jim Kerr, you are a brilliant.

I cannot believe how much modern music has fallen down, incredibly down. Please, compare this song (an irish traditional song, wonderfully arranged by Simple Minds) with any other of today. This is the same with movies, arts and everything else!! We're going to the abyss....

@Anony Mouse many thanks for the article. I was really surprised at the following two possible explanations of the issue: 1) ...rise of lower-skill service jobs has made work less intellectually demanding...; 2) ... global warming... OK... the first hypothesis is sound indeed but the second one is simply ridiculous! However, my idea is that the article authors are jerking readers around in that they miss to mention the "real" reason why people are becoming monkeys: digital dementia!! The web, computer and smartphone abuse is driving us fool and low-QI (and humanity) equipped slaves. The quite interesting books by Manfred Spitzer (e.g.: Digital Dementia) and Michel Desmurget (among others) provide much scientific insight on that. Our brain is decreasing in performances and our heart is frozing. And this is not a case! The élites are forcing this crazy "evolution" dramatically for self evident reasons. But people do non get the web, smart phones and so on enough. This is totally crazy and made the Huxley's "Brave New World" come true!! Cheers from Italy

Still Iconic; they're still making quality records, and compared to U2 who are more popularized here in the US, they've been far more active & consistent than their Irish neighbors; and though I like LARRY MULLEN as a drummer, MEL GAYNOR is more "polished & slick", along w/ the rest of the group with or w/ o DEREK FORBES & MICHAEL MAC NEIL; This is CS from the US saying Hard to Find anyone better than Simple Minds

CHARLIE BURCHILL, like his bandmates are the most under - rated & under - valued Guitarist / Supergroup in Music History arguably, and particularly in America, where U2 is idolized and S. Minds, to many, are known for "Don't You Forget About Me", and "Alive & Kicking", and nothing else: That un- awareness of a tremendously innovative band Was, and Still to this day is partially if not "fully" caused by Radio: When U2 began to use keyboards/ synths, a weapon amongst many in S, Minds used, well before their Irish neighbors, U2 got all the credit. THE EDGE is good, no diubt but Charlie's range, varying tones, and ability to rip "Edge like" riffs in a Burchill style is where he scores BONUS points; This is CS from the US saying CHARLIE BURCHILL, you're Simply "Mind- Blowing" Special... And RIP, Stunning SINEAD, Queen of Ireland

Before sixteen months i lost my best girlfriend. I had met her before 20 years. I was on a walk with my wife as singles. We heard her singing in a square, she was a street artist. I was amazed from her voice. We waited there until she took a break. Then we started talking about music. I remember her as a free spirit. She could start singing no matter if the washing machine was on, or bikes making noise with the exausts, if soneone was raising his voice at the apartment next. She was "sinking" in the music. We gone to the place with my wife few times so we started a very nice friendship. We used to gather at homes and our best game was the "ping pong song". Telling the title we tried to find the artist or the band. So one day i told her this song. She didn't knew it but after a few days she found it and told me that she loved it and would sing it in every appearence she would make. The years past and suddenly she get sick from cancer. The last time i show her at the hospital we put in on and crossed our hands closing our eyes, feeling endless respect and love to each other. When i stood up to go she told me "i love you as much as this song". I felt great honor by her words and said to her "the streets are empty until the Belfast child sings again". That was the last words we said to each other and the last time we saw each other. Rita i miss you but i m sure there is no pain where you are now.

Born in the early 70,s. Never a fan of simple minds. My older brother was a huge fan. Went to watch them on his own at the age of 16. Admired him for that. Now I know why. 80,s had some of the best bands ever. U2 and depeche mode included in my opinion. Timeless. Nothing like it now. Think the 90,,s was the end for talented bands. What’s happened to music. It’s sad to say.

This is now History. Sinead O'Connor is as powerful as powerful can be, and emotional, she is Irish, she wants to hear the Belfast Child sings again. Genuinely. From her heart. This interpretation is incredible, and absolutely unique. And we all want is to hear the Belfast Child sings again.

Simple Minds connect the Dots no matter what Place, Race, or Country you live in this is CS from the US that knows how under- rated and overshadowed by U2 here in America, this incredibly innovative and Funky this band is, w/ the ability to shift gears and emote in medium to slow tempo in a highly slick & polished manner: They've never released a "bad" record beyond the "early" early period of their career Best group many Americans know little or nothing about... May JIM KERR & his bandmates be blessed to add to their "Living Legends" resumes.

@@hughmcwilliams1509 it won't be forever though. Republican voting demographic is far young. A republican party is head of the government for the first time ever and Catholics are a majority for the first time in last census. It wouldn't have a leg to stand on in a generation or two.

@@barra6709 yes but the majority of Catholics won't vote for a united because their to well off within the UK. If it did become a United ireland a few things to list here. Trouble would start again Divisions would become hostile creating more hatred. We would have to pay to see the doctor. Pay for the dentist. Pay to have children Credit for families who don't work would drop drastically. Higher taxes. Now if I was a Catholic I would vote to stay in the UK because we would be better off both protestant and Catholics. But then I'm a realist not a fantasist.
