Hey, thanks for that MooMoo! Two Qs: What is the purpose of the beads at the end? And how does this work with the downrigger? Thank you!
@MooMooOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
The bead chain prevents the line twist. A lot of times barrel swivel don't roll fast enough and cause line twist since krippled anchovy rolls pretty fast. I use this with my downrigger and works very good.

What are the regulations for salmon? I thought it was only 1 barbless hook for ocean? What is the minimum size limit for salmon? How many salmon are you allowed to keep a day? Why are the fishermen at Benicia State Park allowed to use Mepps Flying C's with barbed trebles?

2 barbless hooks in the Ocean. 20 inches in SF area. 2 fish limit. West of Carquinez Bridge is considered Delta (inland waters).

Does the krippled anchovy heads require much tuning to spin properly? Its always nice to see how others rig, especially in different regions/waters. I kayak lake michigan for kings and our setups are a little different. I might try this setup.
@MooMooOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
You just need to put a slight bend and it will roll. What do you use in michican?
@fengrs5 жыл бұрын
Mainly flasher fly combos and spoons, This year just started using meat rigs. Our meat rigs here are usually with a flasher and a few teaser flys before the head so they are definitely not as simple as your setup. Instead of downriggers, most guys here use torpedo divers.

@MooMooOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Yes some people use Kripped anchovy for halibut and we catch stripers with it too.
@SuperBardley5 жыл бұрын
Yea, this is one of the features of our fishery; anchovies, along with smelt and herring, are the base fish in the food chain for the larger target fish, so thankfully we can kinda crossover fish both salmon and Hali’s with nearly the same rig. As Moo pointed out, simplicity on the kayak is the right approach. For folks who like to carry and play with tons of gear, you’re probably better off in a much bigger boat. I’ve worked my kit down to fitting into 1 or 2 of Hobie’s hatch-fit tupperwares, and that includes stashing my anchovies in one of the big slots.

@Sewerman4154 жыл бұрын
Im new to Salmon fishing and really just starting to research. I noticed a lot of guys on KZbin are posting video’s using Cut Plugs with flashers on the Sacramento river and other rivers in CA. Doesn’t a Cut Plug mimic a wounded bait fish and stuffing it with tuna or anchovy give it the desired sent? It seems a well color brined anchovy with a spinner and maybe a flasher would work...
@MooMooOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right some uses cut plug. As far as I know, salmon doesn't really feed when they are in the river system. You are looking for a reaction bite. Instead of them chasing the bait/lure, you put the bait/lure in front of them and irritate them. At least that's the theory. I'm not much of an expert on river salmon though 😉.

Congratulations on the 4K milestone! When I was in FL fishing, the little fish would steal my bait a lot. Sometimes little crabs too. I could have used that Apex or your rig! Later on, I learned that daisy chain trick with the hooks but instead of tying them off, they put the hook through the eye of each hook before it and then hooked the anchovy with the 2 or 3 hooks linked through the eye. I've never seen that little anchovy head cover. I really like the looks of that rig setup though! Next time I go to Florida and fish on my own, I might just give that a try!

Great video, thank you! One question: are those hooks circle hooks and why or why shouldn't we use circle hooks? Sorry, one more: you home-brine your tray anchovies for salmon trolling, right? In other words, they don't come pre-brined...
@MooMooOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Circle hook is meant to be set when the fish swims away rather than at strike. While trolling, you have better chance of hookset with j type hook. For circle hook to work properly, you have to wait for the fish to put the bait in it's mouth, swim away and let the fish to set the hook at it's corner of the mouth. Yes, Tray bait are not pre-brined. They are simply vacuum packed.

Great video Moo. Question though. I have seen your rig for halibuts as well and that also makes the anchovy spin. Does that rig not work for salmon? It seems like both rigs just make the anchovy spin.
@MooMooOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Yes halibut rig does spin and can be used for salmon if you replace the treble hook to a j-hook (and barbless). I like using krippled anchoy because I use the top hook (hook closer to the head) as an anchoring point to bend the bait and leave the bottom hook free and have both hooks tail end of the bait for better hook up.
