Self Inquiry is one of those things that is so simple that it can be dauntingly difficult. For this reason I like to offer various approaches. Sometimes it's just a matter of trying slightly different angles until it clicks. This usually results in a huge "Aha!" moment.

As soon as I realize I'm thinking a thought it's gone. How am I supposed to examine who is thinking this thought, or what it's made of if it's already gone? This is a great source of confusion for me

Great question. So as you turn attention into thoughts they disappear. Then the thought comes that says “I’m confused what to do now because thoughts are disappearing” what happens when you look directly at that thought?
@Streetzlegend

That confusion of finding a source is it. Don't label it instead be in it. When you are aware of the thought then it dissolves it leaves you with a sensation of just being, nothingness. Do not try to know what is aware of thoughts, just be that, that is aware-rather, relax into that awareness, you are that, that is your self, you only ask who am I? who asks this question? from what does this question arise? to re-establish your self as awareness, the source, and that you cannot know, bc unlike thoughts, there is only one self. Who is to know who? To be that, is to know that.

Okay brody, I'm at the point where I can sit as awareness and notice that I've been entangled in a thought for the past few seconds. I always catch it afterwards, sometimes in real time I see them appear. I see they're just being generated and even tho they speak in first person, I'm not the one consciously speaking them in my mind. My attention always gets moved to a thought tho even if I'm super alert. Is this even possible to not get your attention be moved into a thought involuntarily or is this somthing were destined to live with? Thank you

That which knows... That which is watching this video... What is that? Such a mystery ✨❤️ Who am I? Orient towards that dwelling place of silent presence of being, aware of that which arises (thoughts) from this stillness.

Thanks Angelo, this is one of the most helpful videos on youtube! It never fails to help me tune in to the sense of presence. You often say to rest in that sense once you find it. Do I not need to try and investigate or inquire further? The term self-inquiry suggests investigating/questioning, as does the question "Who am I?" by Ramana Maharishi and any number of zen koans. Is it enough to just watch the watcher or do I need to be trying to find out who is doing the watching?

I've got a practice question. I'm doing an inquiry and there are the thoughts that seem like they come from me. Those are not automatic, random thoughts that pop up in my head. Those seem like I'm putting some will to them to generate (it's the same as if I were speaking with my mouth, but I do it in my head). So for example if I say in my head "oh that's just a thought" about another thought or make any observation using thoughts, these thoughts seem closer to me and they also feel like me. There's like a sense of me embedded in them. I'm supposed to let go of that self am I right? It seems soooo close, it seems like me, but it can't be me? I honestly have no clue how to perceive it :)
@SimplyAlwaysAwake

Right, you can’t perceive it in the usual way of speaking bc it’s too close yes? So when you stop thinking You are just You, yes?

@@SimplyAlwaysAwake I'd say that the me as consciousness that persists between thoughts is using will to speak using thoughts. These thoughts are even positioned like inside my mouth and are using my voice (but not necessarily, it's like I'm thinking them willingly) . Honestly it feels like I'm speaking but in my head. Just like I'm writing this comment or like I'm speaking out loud or doing any action. It's like me expressing myself. If I say something in my head now and put attention on it, I see it as a thought object that's made out of words and it has like a personal feel to it, like it's me or like it's coming from me. The difference between this and a thought that pops out of nowhere and talks about random stuff is - that this is like a willingly generated one by me the conscious one. So disidentifying from that would be like me giving up my free will and disidentifying from myself. Which maybe that's what this is all about and that could be an illusion of self - makes sense, but I've no idea. But to answer your last question, when I'm not thinking there's just what is, presence, not really any labels on anything. That we could call "I" right? But then that "I" can communicate willingly with thoughts or words and all that it says is an expression of it. I use the inquiry "who am I without thought" and so without thoughts I can't really describe that state, it's just whatever appears and the knowing of it. Maybe that's an identification with the thinker? But again all these thoughts are so authentic like coming from the source of me :)

@@SimplyAlwaysAwake Appreciate the response Angelo! 🙏 It's more like I see them as a content of awareness. I can observe them, what they're saying and oddly also when they are referring to someone using the language "I". I can watch them have a dialog, which is super weird :D But I also feel that sense that I'm somehow in control of them, I can produce them and stop producing them. Even if that sense is here, I'm not sure where they're coming from or whether I'm actually making them appear. Usually what happens is I will put my attention on the present moment, at the same time having a sense of blocking my thoughts, which if I'm being honest, I don't really know if I'm actually doing. But when I do so, if I do so, it makes me really present. P.S. Reading Awake every day, thanks for this book, it really shines the light at the whole thing! ❤️

Greetings kind sir! Thanks for all these amazing teachings. Your book is amazing and super clear I’m finally taking on inquiry more full time - something that’s been really hard for me to understand in the past. Two quick questions - 1. You say to Recognize a thought as just one thought - does that mean if you become aware that you’re lost in thought but it was a whole stream of thoughts - do you just recognize it and treat it as one thought? 2. Sometimes when I’m noticing a thought in the thought space then inquiring on it- another thought comes up while I’m inquiring on the first. Should I just ignore that until I’ve gone through the inquiry on the first of moving attention back to the me and resting there, or should I drop the thought I’m inquiring about and move to the new thought? These other thoughts are usually thought images of “me” but not always. I experience a lot of “me” image thoghts and didn’t recognize them as thoughts until I read your book.
@SimplyAlwaysAwake

1. Not exactly, rather notice that "I am lost in a stream of thoughts" is the current thought :) 2. You can, but generally speaking the "new" thought that emerges is the current thought so start there again.

You say things like "feel into the I" "follow it backwards to the I". Ramana Maharshi always would say things like "go to the source" this is always very confusing. Could you elaborate a little more on what exactly you mean by these statements? There never seems to be anything to step back into or rest in or any "sense of I" and if I sense it, doesn't that mean it can't be me?

I’ll do a video on this , however it is the nature of this topic that’s sticky. Your question itself (if you feel into it) is coming from a place of wanting to know what it is somewhat conceptually. That’s what I’m pointing away from actually. It’s quite instinctual. But I’ll make another vid soon

@@lucasmurphy740 the monkey chatter of the mind is very normal at first. It's desperately trying to find the answer so it looks at direct inquiry and tries to answer it intellectually. Imagine you are a newborn baby without a sense of an intellectual self. Who am I? If I pretend I don't have language and intellect to answer this then who am I? Without a thought, what am I? You're not your thoughts - thoughts are fleeting and come and go. WHO is that which is always HERE? Thoughts cannot read this sentence and get it - WHO understands this reply? When in the self inquiry, get a sense of emptying your overflowing cup of thoughts. The goal if there is a goal, is to simply not THINK about whatever thought crops up. Thought comes let it - don't chase it to the next thought. You cannot control nor stop the thoughts. They happen and you treat it as "oh look... a thought..." Let it pass. Don't try to engage it because that triggers the mental stirring of the mind. We want to ease our way into pure presence which is always your base. Because of the noisy mind distracting you, you can't feel it but it's there. So this practice is about feeling your way into the I Am state which also includes the thought stream. But I AM is primary to thoughts. Thoughts are secondary. Thoughts can't be eliminated but do quieten with practice. We're letting go here 😀

Angelo, you once pointed out, I think, in the video titled "Thoughtless Space" (the first part) that even things like body sensations and perceptions of the senses are thought. Are these "supposed" to go as well? (yes this comes up as another thought during my enquiry, but I am so identified with it that I thought I might as well just ask you :D) The silence that remains after asking "Who am I?" seems pretty "normal", in the sense that I perceive my body, I sense the seat I'm sitting on, the red hue of the light in the room falling on my closed eyes and whatever else my body is feeling. Further, the subjective "I am"ness isn't as profound as it sometimes is, in this silence. The feeling after asking "who am I?" feels a bit too ordinary that though thought, that takes me to the past or future is now gone, I'm just sitting here. Is this simple present tense that you suggest I abide in, or a deeper sense of I am, when you say "pure I am"? If I'm still searching within for the "I" within, at times, especially when I haven't sorry of "got into the groove of it", I feel I'm just looking into a dark nothing. Is all this just more thought? Am I residing where I should be residing and just identifying with some question-thoughts (I sure am, yeah :D) or is there a need to "go deeper"?
@SimplyAlwaysAwake
@SimplyAlwaysAwake 2 жыл бұрын
So what you described sounds like the I Am sense. It is quite ordinary. Now , can any thought change the imperturbable nature of your experience of that? Also it is quite ordinary so the mind can’t make anything of it and will usually quickly catch your attention back into thought pretty quickly with that sort of “grey doubt.” Oh this can’t be it. Also subtle label thoughts such as “neutral, peaceful, …. “ the key is to stay there and remain just alert enough to recognize subtle thoughts or impressions but not start thinking about THAT 😂

And thought just send like an empty music-less dance in front of my experience of this. This doesn't feel special, is what I've always felt. "But I thought I was supposed to realise that I'm not the body. Didn't I read that the Self is realized when attention is turned completely away from sense perception? Hi Angelo, amazing video again. :) Question about self-inquiry: after asking the question 'who am I?', should I be making sure I'm actually alert in my looking for who I am? Or should I just allow myself to relax into the thoughtless space? Sometimes I am in the thoughtless space, but I feel that I'm just hanging out there, not really alertly looking for what I am. And I feel that in these cases there might still be sense that I am certain sensations in my head. And I feel that when I'm not alert, this illusory sense of 'me' goes unquestioned. However if I try very hard to actively look all the time, I feel that I sometimes strain. It also feels more like doing, which is probably illusory too. I would be really curious for your response to this question! And thanks a lot for writing your amazing book and making these great videos. :)

It's really a subtle balance between the two. If you are alert enough while resting in I Am you will notice subtle thoughts like "sensation in head" and recognize that as another thought which will lead to a slightly clearer pure conscious state. Also watch for the thought that questions what you should be doing in the moment like choosing between those in that moment is itself a thought "I have to choose between..."

Can you speak to others without forethought? Also when you are not around others does the internal narrative stop or continue? Can you choose to sit and not have an internal narrative? What happens if you try? Can you decide not to talk to people in your vicinity? If you decide not to talk does it actually work/ How are these sscenereos different experientially? I would recommend investigating these for a while and see what you find in direct experience. Your inquiry is authentic, i'd rather not just supply conceptual answers but rather lead you deeper into inquiry yourself.

So, let me get this right... I am not my thoughts, but I am everything. That condradicts itself pretty heavily, doesn't it? If we experience this point of view, we have an ego, as in experience of the passage of time while collection information and remembering past events. What is there to transcend?

And also you say: "You can never be out of it" - the same is true for your body/point of view. Whenever I am aware, I am aware as the self/ego/I. I can be aware of as little of this body as possible, but as long as you can experience anything - even ego death - you have done so through your lense of awareness. And for you to remember experiencing it - even if you can't put words onto it - you experienced it with what can be called I or an ego.

A question. I have recently followed self proclaimed enlightened you tubers. One is Simcha Lev who says very wise things about enlightenment, but also loudly supports Zionism. In general then can one be enlightened yet still have a flawed view of life. I now only listen to practical advice that I can test. 0:02

The one that seems to be aware of the thought is the one asking the question "who is aware", isn't it? So that's something like the eye seeing itself, sounds impossible. How then?
