Simple Side Table Makeover | Easy Chalkpainting DIY!

Hi! In this video, I'm showing you a Simple Side Table Makeover! Painting any furniture can be intimidating. Starting on something small like a side table is perfect! A lot of times you can find these at Goodwill hanging out solo for around $10. There are lots of surface areas to practice on; Top, legs, drawer, etc. And you can get your feel for chalk paint without breaking the bank! Small furniture = Small amount of product! And bonus, if you end up messing up and needing to sand it down (because let's be honest... it happens) you're not killing your shoulder and arm sanding!

For this Side Table Makeover you will need:
Side Table
Something to clean it with (Cleaner and Rags)
Sand Paper (is optional but highly recommended!)
Chalk Paint or Matte Latex
Paint Brush
Tape (Optional)
Mister Bottle (You can find these at Sally's Beauty if you don't want to wait on shipping with Amazon)
Furniture Wax Top Coat
Lint Free Rags

I just tried chalk paint for the first time lastnight, and it was drying so fast that it was causing brush marks 🥺. I was painting fast, too. I tried spraying my brush a little and only getting small amount of paint but somehow my whole brush kept getting full when I’d spray it. Thank you for your videos!!

Hi Melissa! Please don't get discouraged! That's great that you tired and nobody is perfect with painting. Unless you use a sprayer there will always be something 🤦‍♀️ painting with chalk paint teaches us alot, especially if you are a perfectionist like I am! 😅 It teaches us patience and to let the little things go. I would recommend a few things. 1, have you tried making your own paint? Sometimes to really understand a media it helps to make it and then you get the idea of paint vs. water. Also the type of brush will play a huge part in streaks. And the paint will naturally hold in the brush and build up over time. So you're not doing anything wrong with that! @@Happyspacediys nope I’ve never made paint. Yea it ended up horrible with me wetting my brush and I was also misting the surface a little when it was drying so fast. My husband watered down what was left of the paint and was able to fix the worst parts. We ran out of paint so decided to just leave it, but I will try again later!! I was using Annie Sloan paint, but then we used the Waverly and that went on perfectly with just a bit of water added. I’ll follow you on Instagram. Thanks so much for offering to help!! I was using the Annie Sloan chalk paint brush, but when I was painting I was trying to just go in one direction for a smooth finish. Is it better to go all ways?? I see Annie Sloan suggests to apply in all directions.

@@melissahall7009 ok!! Now this makes more sense. Your technique is spot on with watering the brush and misting your surface. So keep working with that combo! Annie Sloan paint is very thick and dries really quick. She's the original creator of chalkpaint and designed it to go on with little prep and dry quick so you can do projects in a day. However alot of ppl, myself included, have trouble getting a super smooth flawless finish with her paint. Because it's a paint that works more with the all over direction and texture. And to top it off the brush you were using is ment more for texture then to achieve a smooth brush free surface. Next go around, try using an acrylic based chalk paint like Waverly or Dixie Bell and use a synthetic brush. You can find cheaper ones at Lowes or Home Depot. The palm Woosters are great and I believe around $5-$7. You can also try rolling with a small foam roller. Most of the ppl that are having issues with painting and come to me for help have used Annie Sloan. So you are definitely not alone! I hope this encourages you to try again!
