This machine was sitting in a barn for years, customer brought it in for his Uncle to see if we could rescue it. We found a few issues. A broken spring on choke shaft on the carburetor, bad battery etc. The broken spring was NOT the reason it wouldn't start in the beginning, I'm thinking it just took a bit to prime the fuel system back up. After the first start with brake cleaner (starting fluid) it fired up every time after that.

T-Bone....thank you. Thank you for being a guide for those who know not. I recently found an interest in small motors within this past year for some odd reason and now my youtube is full of riding lawn mower videos. I've acquired 3 mowers this year and with your help have gotten all 3 working perfectly. I just cut the grass with one I just fixed up and it was a very simple DIY. The guy I bought it from gave up on it but with your help I'm hoping to give it a few years more. Thank you sir and keep up the good work!

Man, I could never work on a machine that dirty! I pretty much wash every machine that I work on before I start. Makes the entire experience a lot better and more efficient because I can actually see all the details and possible issues beforehand. Because I do most of my cleaning outside that also helps to keep my shop a lot cleaner.

Cleaning is a relative concept. The cleaner it is the more you will see the problem areas and who wants that. Great job getting this machine up and running. Looks like a good machine but running and mowing will tell the tale. Thanks for the videos.

I am going to bypass the automatic choke on my 42" Troybilt Pony riding lawnmower. I prefer a manual choke. I have read/heard conflicting arguments .... with full choke, is it better to cold start the lawnmower engine with medium rpm's or full throttle like you have to do to set the automatic choke? What is your opinion?

Yes it was. Exactly, a visual inspection is always step one. Wish I had time to clean them up. We are repairing 5 or 6 machines per day, about 80 pieces of equipment per month. It's just me and my lovely wife running this shop, no employees.

I would not begin to work on something that filthy without first using a power washer on it. Whenever you loosen or touch some part and dirt falls everywhere, it usually lands where it could cause a problem.. And usually there is enough debris under the flywheel cover to restrict adequate cooling. which often causes a valve guide to "walk" resulting in a bent push rod..
@henryduke722

Why in the world did you not blow it off before you start working on a carburetor
@chadfield376

That’s another example of someone who owned a decent riding mower who knew nothing about how to take care or machinery. These riders need to be stored in an enclosed garage or shop setting with some kind of concrete floor. A barn with a dirt floor is almost as bad as just sitting outside. I know in my semi-rural area here in NE TX, I see so many riders stored outside sitting on the sides or in the back yard of houses and a lot of those mowers with no cover on them. People wonder why their $2k rider or even $350 push mower, stops working after 2-3 seasons. The non-mechanical minded don’t understand these small engines are not weather exempt and rain, snow, and ice reek havoc on these mowers.

Wanna ruin your equipment? Park it outside preferably in a puddle. If you really want it to last more than 9 years, garage it. Or at least under a tarp or two and in a lean-to. I had so many different critters living in my new machine, I put mothballs on top of the battery. We'll see if they return.
