Hey Luke, I've been turning pens for 7 years and now I'm inspired to try rings. Great tutorial with a light-hearted approach. Do some more.

You've show some really good techniques in this video. Couple of tips if your interested... use masking tape on you mandrel as the rings less likely to stick to it. It also allows you to finish the edges to get better coverage on each side on the ring. I'd highly recommend using CA glue as it makes the rings incredibly stronger. To be fair no matter what glue you use one coat simply isn't enough. I had mine pressure tested and for absolutely best results id recommend 2x coats of thin CA to both inner and outer surfaces as this penetrates and stabilizes the wood forming its strength and finish with another 4-6 coats of CA medium depending on the finish you'd like, sand between glue coats and buff to finish, you will find this finish is ultra glossy and look incredible. I find the glossy rings sell out at market first as they highlight the burl so muck better. If wanting a dull finish use same CA application but fishy with EEE sanding paste and don't buff to keep semi shiny - EEE is equal to 2000 grit. I'd also recommend making a female mandrel as it will be much easier to complete the same steps internally after completely finishing the outside off the ring first but also making the process incredibly faster. Otherwise you've done an amazing job and skills, great video. All the best with you markets. Cheers, Kev

I have some small chunks of desert ironwood I might give that a go!

Thin ca will penetrate and really make the rings strong. Unfortunately you can’t buy it at the big box, they carry medium and thick. It’s as thin as water and penetrates deep. Beautiful wood

i use a hole saw to cut the od . and a spade to cut the ID. then use dowels in a chuck with sanding paper attached, and get the ID to the siZE i want, then worry bout the outside ,then i use ca glue to seal inside and outside ,then use ,steel wool 0000 to buff it when done . 3 coats of CA glue

I was out quail hunting in the AZ desert yesterday and came upon a dead tree that I thought Id cut down to use to make bowls and such n my lathe. My chainsaw was just filed and sharp..little did I know it was a desert Ironwood and that thing dulled my chain quick and was HARD to cut. Took twice as long as normal. It has the most beautiful sap/heart wood combination as desert ironwood is known for. Im going back today to get the rest of the tree. I just found out that its illegal to cut and remove ironwood, but this one has been dead for years so I don't think its illegal?

Nice job. Let me make a recommendation on your Finnish. For the first two coats put a dab of boiled linseed oil the size of a dime or so on your rag and add a drop or two of thin CA. The oil glue mixture will penetrate the wood and the linseed oil gives the wood a nice warmth and depth that is amazing. After that just a few coats of medium CA , sand , polish and wax and you will be amazed. Especially with the desert iron wood.

Been making wood rings, just like this, for a while now. I find you need to use a wood with a janka hardness over 2500 to really make a ring that lasts. Anything weaker and they break fairly quickly. Olive wood makes an awesome ring, or snakewood does too. Great job on these. They look great!
@Amateur_Pool7 жыл бұрын
Luke Edward Mixter yes, ironwood by itself would be perfect. to get the burl effect the wood actually has rot. that weekens it a bit. still, these rings look pretty bad ass!
@artheen47137 жыл бұрын
A problem is that generally speaking the harder the wood, the more brittle. While it won't break from pressure, it can crack or chip from impact. Oily woods without a pronounced grain tend to be less brittle, even with a lower Janka hardness. For non-oily woods, stabilizing a ring with thin superglue helps a lot. Make sure you saturate the end grain on one side continuously, until it stops absorbing. Don't put any superglue or polish on the other side until you've done this, to allow the capillary effect to suck the superglue through.
@robertpainter19846 жыл бұрын
Do you maybe know, how strong this ring is? Is it possible to wear it normally, have you tried it? I tried very thin ash wood once, and it broke quite quickly. Do you maybe have experience with hornbeam?
@robertpainter19846 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your answer. I haven't tried the hornbeam for the ring. Otherwise, on the Janka scale, it seems to be pretty hard, around 1500. It is bright wood. It is more like a bush.

You should have finished the inside before you parted it off.
Dude save time and use a hole saw 1 1/4 drill the outside perimeter first then use hot glue to a flat surface and drill your inside the pull it off put it on the wood/metal lathe done just sand up to 1500 grid to 2000 grid. Finish of your choice
