Really great job on the rings! I love how the coral inlay looks against the dark walnut. I am really interested in woodworking. I have very limited experience with wood, (I'm talking from way back in middle school wood shop) but I always enjoyed it, and wanted to get into it. I subscribed to your channel, and cant wait to see what else you have in store for us! I hope she liked the rings! :)

Well, I didn't get everything all at once. If you start slowly buying what you need, through time, your shop will be complete.

I might suggest, without reading everyones comments, using a small parting tool to make the groove for the inlay. Should give a wider band of inlay as you decrease the thickness of the ring itself. That is what I did on the couple I made and it worked pretty good. I like your methods otherwise.

Hey, thanks for the vid. Good stuff. I was wondering how you jigged up the drill to do the intial hole in the blank while it was on the lathe. If you could explain I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to do a ring myself. One thing I might consider just to cut down on the bulk of that ring is shaping the ring a bit more and doing a more shallow channel for the inlay once the ring is smaller to start with. Not sure if that would get it too thin, and you'd worry about splitting the thing or not.

+Anthony Spencer Hey, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. The piece of wood is being held by the chuck and then on my tail stock, I have the drill bit in a drill chuck. The one advise I would give is definitely use your chisel to get the outside of the ring to the thickness you want the ring to be before you drill out the material. Doing it the way I did where you drill first, then remove material made the thickness of the walls slightly off. It's not extremely noticeable, but it's not perfect. Other than a lathe, You need at least a bowl gouge, parting tool, and skew chisel. Also, a good quality face mask and a respirator for dust. If you don't have the lathe already, then you'll probably need a chuck along with a center.

Les Portes du Temps The only real difference was the thickness of them. One is like a water and then the other has a medium thickness. I used that to make sure it didn't run everywhere. It's a little easier to manage. They both dry the same though.

What brand/model lathe do you use in this video? It looks like it works nicely for you!

Guy Smith Rikon 70-100. It may appear it works nice, but I do not recommend it. It's cheaply made and the cast metal parts crack easily. If you are serious about wood turning, I would recommend spending a little more money on the Jet or something better. Just my opinion.

Guy Smith If your from the US I'd recommend the Harbour Freight 7X10 mini lathe, if your from Europe the Sieg SC3 3000 7X14 (what I use), both mini lathes are great and very precise as well as powerful, but cost varies greatly dependant on supplier :)

How did the ring(s) hold up? I've seen other turners say they didn't last more than two months of daily use.

The thin one cracked with time and the other is just fine. I'm actually working on a better way to make these rings. I'll post an update when I figure it out. Thanks for watching.

Impregnate/stabalize the wood with polyester clear casting resin in a pressure pot before turning your ring. P.S. Your address was on the news paper LOL ...... oops?

Happy wife, Happy life. love the inlay ring, I plan to make my lady a similar one with sand from our Cancun vacation together. Quick question, what are your buffing steps, like, grit, or brand names, etc. the last step looks like beeswax. buffing is new to me. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. Subscribing!

I got it a while ago from craftsuppliesusa.com. If they no longer carry it, you may have to do a internet search for it. Sometimes I actually find great supplies on eBay.
