@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 3 жыл бұрын
OK, so I believe that in the case of the B58 the system is working proactively rather than reactively. The potential pressure peaks caused by sudden load shedding (i.e. due to the inertia of the turbocharger turbine), is tackled by the DME/ECU through electrical charging pressure control instructions to the various components. Upcoming pressure peaks are predicted and mitigated by quick adjustment of the wastegate valve, and using assistance from the valvetronic and the throttle valve (to divert the remaining charge air to the exhaust).

So would the Coolant Pressure relief valve they installed (11) possibly solve the issues of coolant leaking from the engine that has become "normal" for the B58 and previous N* versions?
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does seem this is a measure implemented to partially address this issue. However, it would only assist with coolant loss from the engine coolant circuit, and it could not help with similar coolant loss from the intercooler coolant circuit. Having said that, it's my personal impression (not based on any data) that the engine coolant circuit is more susceptible to "unexplained" coolant loss than the intercooler coolant circuit. It might be useful to perform a survey and see how many B58TU owners have coolant loss compared to B58 owners and from which circuit...
@universalg_
@universalg_ Жыл бұрын
@@NoBrainerTalk Its weird man Im on the gen1 B58 and my coolant magically disappears even tho I replaced my coolant tank cap. My friend who works at BMW says that it could be coolent vent line/hose or the water pump as the first iterations of the water pump were plastic and new revisions are steel. I dont know for sure though but I never heard of the coolant circuit/coolant pressure relief valve
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk Жыл бұрын
@@universalg_ Some suggestions: to determine where the fault might be, requires to pressurise the coolant circuit and observe if pressure is maintained. Sometimes a dye could be used to help find the location of the leak. A complete loss of coolant should leave wetting, or at the very least white residue deposits, wherever it is leaking from. Have a very good look around the engine bay. White exhaust smoke would indicate the coolant is leaking into the cylinders. Hope this helps...

@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 3 жыл бұрын
Correct on the supra engine, yes. We can only guess as to what has led to the return of the "old style" cylinder head design on the higher power B58TU engines, as the BMW engineering analysis is not available to study. Of course we cannot rule out that it can potentially cope with higher power compared to the new aluminium cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold. The new design might help with heat retention (faster warm-up means less emissions) but heat retention might also mean power losses arrive earlier when pushed hard. So the old design might mean slower warmup but less power loss when pushed hard (which becomes more critical as the power increases).

This needs further research, but there is some information that the pistons and rods are a different Part Number, and the theory is the supra variant is capable of handling more boost. Otherwise, it seems (at first glance and pending actual research) to be a typical B58B30M1 engine with a Toyota engine cover.
@pokest225
@pokest225 3 жыл бұрын
In other places, people say the 382hp model has new head design with 6 port external exhaust manifold, instead of the early "headifold" desing with turbo bolted directly with only 2 exhaust channels, that was present in the first year supra engine (340hp). Also the new engine has different compression ratio, so maybe it has different pistons too, not sure about that.
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 3 жыл бұрын
@@pokest225 Hi, yes the B58B30O1 is the 382hp variant and the B58B30M1 is the other variant with lesser hp (depending on series/model, typically 340hp). The B58TU and B58 both have the same 11:1 cylinder compression ratio. The original supra engine appears to be based on the B58B30M1, but with some changes. The latest supra may have an engine based on the B58B30O1. Some of the internal parts may be subject to on-going production improvements that are unrelated to engine type or generation (e.g. the newest B58B30M1 may be slightly improved compared to an early B58B30M1, etc). Typically only safety issues (or these days false emissions results) would result in mandatory recall to implement.

B) It was mentioned that the turbo can be removed seperately, is that for the high powered B58TU? C) Does that include the ability to run it without a turbo? D) Can it make the B58TU be easier to convert to a supercharger? E) Is the Diesel available with a 6 speed gearbox, or any of the of B58TU engines available with an all wheel drive manual transmission? Thank you for the positive feedback. A) Access to those is the same as the other engine variants, indeed I believe it will require the engine to be raised out of the engine bay, B) For the M1 version of the engine, C) Without/bypassing the turbo (without charge air) the engine will probably still run with very limited power output and essentially will go into limp mode, D) I don't know tbh E) Diesel version is B57, I believe it is currently auto GB only. I'm struggling to find any example of B58TU with manual transmission, so I do believe B58TU is auto only, F) Noted on dedicated video, let me see what I can do. One of the best videos regarding the B58 engine. Could you please elaborate on the difference between mid-power engine vs high-power engine? For example X3 m40i LCI vs X5 40i? Extra power is indeed very tempting..
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the main hardware difference between the medium power B58B30M1 and high power B58B30O1 is the cylinder head, the attached turbocharger, and the catted downpipe attached to the turbo. There will also certainly be different ECU software between the two variants. The cylinder head is most likely aluminium in both B58TU variants, but while the B58B30O1 retains a very similar design to the 1st generation B58, the B58B30M1 has a new design cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold (which is not done for performance reasons but for cost and efficiency improvements), and the exhaust turbocharger is modified to account for that. The catalytic converters between the two B58TU variants are also different P/Ns which might indicate that the B58B30O1 cat is more free flowing to help the engine achieve the higher power (for example the M1 cat might have two cores - one a 600cpsi and one a 400cpsi, whereas the O1 might have a 600cpsi core and 300 cpsi core). These are the main differences, I believe the two variants are otherwise the same. Theoretically you can tune the B58B30M1 engine to achieve the same performance as the B58B30O1 (335hp to 382hp) with no hardware changes as it's unlikely that 382hp will be pushing the limits of the B58B30M1 cylinder head. It's also possible to downrate the B58B30O1 to produce less hp. If I had to guess why BMW developed the two variants it would be due to needing to meet certain emissions requirements (e.g. average fleet requirements), and not being able to achieve this with the B58B30O1 design. They possibly had to implement further changes to the B58TU design, hence the creation of the B58B30M1. This is a pure guess, but could explain why the B58B30O1 is the B variant and B58B30M1 is the C variant.

@@NoBrainerTalk Didnt expect that prompt reply lol, thanks for that. Based on your description, g05 40i should achieve stock x3 m40i power indicators with a light ecu tune combined with a catless dp. Downpipe should do the trick for the exhaust sound.
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
@@beneficialmight9816 Indeed, with a catless dp and tune it should be possible to significantly exceed 382hp. Keep in mind the main benefit of the B58B30M1 cylinder head is lower emissions through faster warmup, which on the negative side means the engine continues being warmer when it is no longer needed (so this implies that it generally relies more on the cooling system than the B58B30O1, whose cylinder head design evidently retains less heat). I would guess therefore that while the M1 engine can accomplish stellar performance, when pushed for an extended time the M1 is more likely to reduce power to keep within acceptable operating temperatures. The M1 would also therefore benefit more from cooling system upgrades compared to the O1.. Just some personal thoughts...

I wondered the exact same thing, and did endless research. I could not find much evidence of people having issues and needing to replace the injectors at the same time as the pump. So eventually I just replaced the HPFP with the B58TU equivalent without replacing the injectors. I guess as so many people are running upgraded HPFP with stock injectors, they can cope with the increased pressure. The B58TU injectors also have different spray pattern for efficiency gains, and I want that too. In the future, I might buy one, and test fit it to my 1st gen B58 and if it works OK then maybe change the other 5. But for now, running a stage 2+ tune with the B58TU pump and stock injectors, like many others...

There seems to be a general understanding that Toyota and BMW engineers worked on the project together. The level of involvement of Toyota is unclear and there is some confusing information in terms of whether the B58TU engines installed in the Supra and slightly modified by Toyota.

So if I'm correct, the M140i and M240i produce slightly more power than the 340i and 440i, not because of slight tweaks to the engine, but due to mapping done by BMW, correct? That's the theory I'm going by since they share the exact same engine
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, indeed the early 340i and 440i with 1st Gen B58 produced slightly less power than M140i and M240i, but those 340i and 440i produced slightly more power than M140i and M240i with the M Performance Power and Sound Kit. As all of those have the same B58B30M0 engine, we can reasonably say the differences in engine output are down to tuning. We can only guess what the reasons were for BMW choosing to vary the engine output by relatively small amounts across the range.

Is it possible that when Toyota came along in 2017-or-so, they comment on the 1st gen B58 causing BMW to modify it only after a yr of use?
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
There's several years between the 1st Gen and the B58TU, and already there is a B58TU2 coming out soon. The driver is predominantly changing regulations, but that's not to say that the development teams would otherwise sit idle and not find ways to improve the design anyway. It is accepted that Toyota has been involved in the B58TU development, so perhaps the design has benefited from Toyota engineering input. But we can't know if Toyota helped the BMW engineers just meet the regulations or if they helped improve the design beyond that.

Based on this video and others, the change from B58 to B58TU is very drastic and was not subtle at all. They went from single timing chain in N55 to two chains via intermediate drive sprocket (to change timing) and back at single chain in terms of a yr span (or less). And I don’t think the change was done overnight either and correct me if I’m wrong nearly 100% of the major components from B58 to TU have different part bin#. And the block is different, too, right?

If I sell my m340i I will have a lot of cash in my hands which means I’ll be able to dump a lot of money on the regular 340i much quicker , should I be patient and stick with the m340i and slowly mod that one? Or should I just go with the regular 340i and mod that one? Will they both give me similar power? I’m talking about 850whp+ , going internals and all dat, I want to hear your opinion ! And keep up the great work !
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, what an interesting question. To be honest I don't know. Here's what I think: Alot of the improvements made to the B58TU over the B58 have to do with emissions, not with performance. Having said that, the opportunity was taken with the B58TU to improve production standards (such as form honing, but also the more light-weight components) which means the engine has a few components which are lighter whilst being more robust, so have less inertia on the internal parts and technically can respond faster to changes in load. With enough money thrown at them both generations are capable of 850whp I believe. They are fundamentally the same engine, with about the same weakspots that need to be addressed to get that level of performance. If you look at what the guy did to get the supra engine to 1000hp (at the crank) you would fundamentally need to do the same things to both generations (new intake manifold, new cylinder head cover, new turbo, enhanced pistons, new ECU, etc). With economics taken into account, what you say kinda makes sense. Sell the brand new M340i and with the extra cash over the older 340i get the mods done. It would be a very interesting project. I know this isn't very helpful, hopefully someone with more expertise will see this question and give us their 2 cents.

Does it still leak oil from the valve cover gasket?
@NoBrainerTalk
@NoBrainerTalk 2 жыл бұрын
A number of B58s have experienced oil leaks from different places, including from the valve cover gasket. However as far as I know the issue is currently not affecting any significant number of engines so it cannot be said to be a design issue (or an expected issue for the engine design). It is possible that production assembly or country-specific environmental factors (for example) can lead to individual engines experiencing unusual issues. We cannot yet say for sure what oil leaks (if any) are a "typical issue" as the world fleet of engines continues to be relatively young at this phase, and the vast majority are running with zero oil leaks. Just my humble opinion. :)

To be honest I don't know, but it looks to me like the new charge pipe was essentially only "flattened" (compared to the old one) due to reduced clearance with the fan assembly and engine radiator in cars that feature B58TU engine. I'm not sure if this is due to changing regulations or just improved "packaging." I do not think this change was done for the engine's benefit, but again I'm not sure.

There was certainly some "downgrading" of capability for the B58B30M1 with the integrated exhaust manifold (the engine clearly favours faster warmup & lower emissions over performance and endurance), but I'm not quite sure if the 1st gen is more able to hold power than the B58B30O1. The changes in exhaust turbo and coolant pressure management sounds like better reliability but everything else may not improve reliability. One big concern is the timing chain which requires the engine to be removed to gain access and I would think two chains would take less load and wear vs one chain. Higher pressure of fuel injection would also mean the fuel pumps would need to work harder. I think only time will tell lol but right now I’m more comfortable with 1st generation for reliability.

I think most 1st gen B58 owners remain satisfied with the engine, and I doubt many owners (if any) would buy a new car just to get the 2nd gen B58. Time will tell how well the world fleet of engines ages. I guess with climate change we all have a responsibility to help the environment, so I can't fault BMW for trying to improve the engine to reduce its emissions (even if its just to adhere to stricter regulations). Keep in mind that less emissions generally means less fuel consumption, so again I can't say I would be against having to refuel less frequently. I think the 2nd gen is a good evolution of the 1st gen, but it's not such an improvement as to be a game changer. I'll stick to my 1st gen too.
