Being a very VERY highly sensitive person I never ever read newspapers and not watch the news if I can help it. I know there’s a lot of suffering in the world, but me looking at it and not being able to sleep anymore and worry all the time isn’t going to solve these problems. It is only going to create a new one: me getting depressed. So why would we be bad persons. Why would people who watch the news every second and can tell about each bomb and deadly victim would be better people, since they too don’t do anything or are not able to do anything. That is my opinion and no one can change my mind. At 65 I think I’m entitled to decide for myself what I let into my life and what not. People in my environment know they can rely on me when they need help. And that is what I personally believe is much more important. Glad you’re back, Vera. I live in Belgium and it sure as hell’s been wet!!

Here here! I am not watching or following the news for a long time. I’m not even hsp but I just care about the real life world more. Like you said, being a good person for the world around you also spreads love and positivity into the world. That’s much more needed than spending energy on feeding yourself with anxiety and negativity.

Completely agree. The most important infos always reach my ears if needed, by friends or family. I'm a student and I don't have the money, the energy nor the strength to help the people we hear in the news. Me knowing the atrocious details won't help them nor me.

Same. Don't have a TV, don't read newspapers, cause they depress me. On my way to and from work I hear the news in the local radio station in my car and that is far enough for me.

I strongly believe that I can make a difference to the world not by watching news and being sad about it but by acting locally and on a small scale, like really small scale, like being nice to my husband and my child or smile to a shopkeeper. Or just notice when someone wants to chat and chat a little, especially to seniors. It all adds up. I figure out I don't need to be a noticeable hero to make a world a better place. And I signed up for local volunteers to help children with low self esteem to start to believe in themselves. Beautiful initiative 😊 But even if I hadn't I think the point is to be useful somehow and to be loving . And to take care of our loved ones. I believe it is enough and even more than enough.

I stopped watching the news in about 2017 for the same reasons. I still have to be careful on how many prayer requests I take bc it can begin to overwhelm me, the heartache and suffering that I want to "fix." Then I tell myself, God has it already for me..the burden carrying, the peaceful hug. I just need to trust and remember that I can plant the seed, that I can pray and love others, but the burden of fixing all of the problems..well...it's not mine to bear. And I'm not alone♡♡♡

Thank you very much for sharing this video with us. I went throu😊gh a horrible depression. Couldn't do anything except lay in bed. One afternoon I just made myself get out of bed and went outside and sat on my front porch to get some fresh air. That helped start to coming out of the depression and I talked to my Mom and told her what I was going through and she was very supportive.

Hi Vera, its lovely to see you back! The weather here in England is pretty crappy at the moment, all it seems to do is rain. But I also dislike the hot summers, like you. I think Spring is the ideal season for me. One thing I tried just before the new year was doing a litter pick in my local park. It got me and my husband outside, and we were doing something to help the community. It left me feeling really buoyed up and positive! I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend. ♥️🌱

Winter in Bangladesh is comfortable. Our people look forward to winter as it is a hot country. I am not sure if anyone gets any winter blues here, but sometimes it’s hard to deal with the cold. It's not that cold here definitely, but we have no heating system in our houses, so if the weather is 12 degrees outside, it’s also the same inside the house too. So, for like 2 weeks to 1 month we feel really cold. But there is no snow and not even rain in winter here, little sunlight but not too cloudy. It's actually comfortable here during winter. We all love winter.

I live in Estonia and we've also had very little sunlight. Since I'm highly sensitive AND originally from California this really takes a toll on me. I doubled my vitamin D intake and began taking magnesium. I also started exercising more regularly and I try to get out for a walk each day. Doing something creative like crocheting, drawing or painting really helps me get into the flow state and forget about the dreary weather. I've done many of the things mentioned in your video and they really do help.

Point number two is one I used to struggle with… The January and February blues! I live in a climate much like yours. (Victoria BC). I’m in my 70’s and have loved your channel for a few years now. My daughters are right around your age and I like to keep in touch with what young people are doing and going through…. It keeps me thinking young!! I found over time, that in November and December, when I know I have to book appointment sometime soon…. Like hair cuts medical exams, tests etc…. If I book them for January and February, I end up so busy that those months fly by. Also, in February, like you, I make an effort to note all plant life that’s starting to show. Especially blossoms! Thank you for so often being a bright spot in my day!
@SimpleHappyZen

Scheduling things in January and February is clever! It takes some of the busyness away from the last months of the year, and makes the first months of the new year go by a bit quicker :) I've also heard someone share the tip to take some of the fun get togethers that usually get planned in December and postpone them until January, to make the holidays less busy and the more depressing season more fun :) Take good care and let's hope springtime will be here soon! :)

The winter blues can hit really hard. Here on the Canadian prairies we get a great deal of sunshine, thank goodness, but our winters are usually long and cold, and with lots of snow. I have a treadmill, and although I don’t like having one in my house, at least I can exercise on those super cold days and listen to something uplifting at the same time. Browsing through gardening books and magazines makes me feel hopeful and happy, and I also buy myself flowers in the winter :) Love your channel Vera ❤

Great and helpful tips you are sharing here. The top 3 things that work for me are going outside to catch a ray of sunshine and fresh air, moving my body (for me it's yoga) and a loving hug from my husband. The latter feels like a short wellness break from the world and I'd wish everyone had someone to experience that. 😊

These are great tips! I have been using a lot of these techniques this winter. Not only do I live in a cold, snowy climate, but I also had to have surgery mid-January. I can't believe the difference it makes to go outside for a slow recovery walk, shower, and get dressed. It made me feel a little more normal while I waited to feel better. I have been walking in the cold and the snow, and I am actually craving it every day!

So great to have you back - I missed you. This video has come at the perfect time for me, I am just recovering from a really bad bout of the flu where I was stuck in bed/on the sofa with the curtains closed and feeling very glum and sorry for myself. I'm just starting to be able to be active again. My bed is next to my window and I found that sleeping with the window open a crack to let the fresh air in made such a difference. In the mornings I've started opening my blinds as soon as I first stir, so I can lie in bed feeling the breeze and seeing the moonlight outside. This really helps to motivate me to crack on with my day. Loved the tip about just working your way slowly through the jobs you've been putting off. I recently bought a new diary that has a huge notes section for each week, so I put my to do list in the notes section rather than in a particular day, so I don't overload myself. Love all your videos, we are very similar! I'm grateful for you taking the time to share with us. Roll on Spring :)

Hi Vera, welcome back! Whenever I feel down or blues-y (oh yeah, winter-blues and THIS WEATHER right now, horrible. I live in Emden, not so far away from the Netherlands, and I think we had quite similar weather over here ...), I cuddle or pet my cats, watch them playing and play with them. When I feel like it, I grab one of my "feel good" books and do a re-read in the tub with a nice scented bath bomb or something alike. Or I call one of my friends and talk with them about silly things until we both laugh our butts of. Or I watch one of my "feel good" movies or some episodes of my favourite TV shows. Sometimes I watch an extra sad movie to give myself a good, cleansing cry (while cuddling one of my cats). Or I do a little yoga session with a Mady Morrison video or kick myself in the rear and go to the gym. And, I must admit it, sometimes it's just some cookies and a nice cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or chai/matcha latte. :) And, being a HSP and prone to depression, I cut down the news to a minimum.

Thanks for posting this. Had an incredibly bad mental health day today and really appreciated these tips to know I’m not alone and doing the small tasks really matter. I’m from Australia and it’s so hot here right now, which can also mean it’s hard to get outside….as the heat can drain you. A tip that helps me move past a worrying anxious thought is to go to a list on my phone that I follow when such a thing happens. This helps me ‘do’ something and stop worrying. I have 10 steps of reminders that I carry out to help me move on. Sometimes they are not things to do, but reminders of what not to do. Love your content and sending you good days ahead. ❤

Great to have you back Vera and being honest about how things are there in the Netherlands. I am in the UK, but weatherwise, the Netherlands sounds worse! I have been using candles in my Windows in the morning and evening when it is darker outside, which it is in the mornings and evenings. It definitely makes it feel cosy inside. I also have 6 solar powered garden lamps, which absorb light during the daytime. Then at night, I also use these lamps around the Flat, bedroom, bathroom and hallway. It seems to cheer up the Flat and it's free light from the sun ☀. I have been doing quite a lot of things you mentioned in being able to feel better. However, chores seem never ending 😅😅 Thanks Vera. I have been playing this over and over again, as I have not seen you for a while. I got called away for Christmas to help a friend with her elderly mother, so that sorted Christmas! Also being in a different County was a change of scene. Devon is and was beautiful. But I do like Dorset where I was brought up. No place like Home! Happy New Year Vera. Thanks for the helpful and relaxing videos x I look forward to hearing more from you. Take care x 😊

I just wanted to note that going outside or opening the window completely is very different from sitting behind a window. It's not just about everything looking brighter, but also the sun rays really reaching your skin. But if you can't go outside, try a daylight lamp.

Welcome back! Im glad you are feeling better! It's winter here in the US, but we have had very little snow this year. Right now we are experiencing what we call Fool's Spring because it has been unseasonably warm. I have always had SAD and usong a light box really heloed, but since I am primarily workung from home these days I have desk in between two windows so all of the natural light has made a huge difference in how I feel.

Thank you for this wonderful video❣️ Interestingly, this winter season has not been that hard for me although it's been so gray and rainy. I partly attribute that to me taking vitamin D regularly since last summer. :) One small thing that I noticed that I would like to tell you is that you talk about comfort food in quite a negative way by kind of using it as a synonym for junk food. 🙈 But to me, a warm healthy veg-loaded (lentil) curry for example is such a comfort food that is both nourishing my body and mind - short- and longterm. ☺️ Or a warm porridge with berries, cinnamon and maybe some small pieces of dark chocolate. You know what I mean. 😄 Just a wording issue that rose my attention. 💚 Edit: Now at the end of the video. Welcome back, dear Vera! 😊 Glad that you've taken some time to recover and recharge and that you're feeling better now! 🌿☕

Hi Vera! Excellent and timely video and conversation. One of my tips is to allow myself to feel whatever I’m feeling fully but set a timer on the experience. For example, I’ll give myself 30 minutes to do whatever I need to do with my feelings and energy and then after that I try to shift the vibe and move forward. Having the timer set helps remind me that feelings and emotions are always changing. 😊

I wish we could give you some sun and that you could give us some rain and clouds.😂 I miss the sound of the rain so much!

I have tried a bright light, kinda like a sun lamp, but it is supposed to give you the light like when it is sunny. For me that was a little awkward and didn’t like it but others may. I got it off of Amazon and it was not too expensive. The other thing that I started and it is working, is sitting in an infrared sauna twice a week. There is no steam like a traditional sauna and it is equipped with chroma therapy lights and it has made a tremendous difference in my mood. If you have a wellness spa that offers this I recommend trying it.

No9: so important. And when we're feeling low (which is more common this time of the year) it's easy to get into this self-isolation cycle. And connecting with others helps our bodies release oxytocin. No10: I often try to slow down during winter. To self-reflect. To check in with myself, my Inner Child, review my goals, etc. It's important for me because we can often over identify with this winter season blues and say things such as: "Oh I am feeling low because it's winter" whereas there might be other areas in our life that need addressing (such as relationships, career, boundaries, Inner Child work - especially if we've never done it, unprocessed grief, physical health, sleep, etc etc)

Glad to have you back Vera, and very happy to hear you're feeling a lot better. Despite living on the south coast of England (the sunniest part of the country by far) it has been a very gloomy, grey & rainy winter (though thankfully the sun has shone brightly for a few days each week) and I've particularly struggled with the long nights this year. I found your tip about having things to look forward to, to really resonate as that's what I've been doing to get me through the winter. In my case, still being mostly housebound (I am getting out for walks most weeks now), my 'things to look forward to' were nice lunches and dinners, good books to read, tv-shows to enjoy of an evening, and simple things like that. It's amazing how impactful having small little things to look forward to can be. And now that you're back, I have your videos to look forward to as well!! 😁❤ (Though I've been throughly enjoying watching your old videos during your break too.☺)
