Trivia: The children's show "Bob the Builder" had to be revised in Japan. In the UK and US versions, Bob had 4 fingers. In Japan, the humans were made to have 5 fingers instead of 4, as a man having 4 fingers indicates their membership with the Yakuza. It's part of Japanese culture and society at the time.

Good question. Let me try to explain. 1. DO means way of something like judo, kendo, bushido, etc. 2. GOKU means extreme or ultimate, so literally GOKUDO is way of extreme, or way of ultimate. Make sense, I hope? Anyway its a word to express their pride being outlaw. 3. Usage is a bit different from other -DO terms, like practice kendo or exercise, judo. GOKUDO refers to certain type or grope of people, used like We are GOKUDO, he is a GOKUDO, or I'm a wife of GOKUDO. Hope it helps.

When I lived in Kobe a few years ago, there was a civil war over some secession crisis or whatever in the Yamaguchi-gumi that made it all over the news. Apparently this led to the group splitting in two, but I don't know if they made up. My friend lived near a particularly nice neighborhood that she suspected had a lot of Yakuza residences and during this time, there was a drive-by on one of those residences. No, there weren't mass shootouts in the streets between rival factions. They were pretty discreet about it all. Interesting fact. The Yakuza made the news one year for holding a Halloween event for where kids can go trick-or-treating at their HQ. They've been doing it for over a decade.

A well-meaning doc but a few big inaccuracies here: Quite a few Yakuza members are ethnic Korean, but ethnic Koreans are NOT Burakumin. Ethnic Koreans (Zainichi) along with Burakumin, both form a major chunk or the Yakuza ranks, but they are different from each other. Burakumin are a severely socially discriminated ethnic group that traces their ancestries to medieval peasants who had undesirable jobs that were considered unclean, like butchers or undertakers. Modern Yakuza also don't trace their lineage to the medieval-era peddlers and gambling establishments. Those were simply their 200 year-old counterparts. Modern Yakuza all trace their beginnings to war-torn Japan of the late 1940's, where poverty was rampant and there was an economic vacuum that placed the Yakuza in power.
@vksasdgaming94724 жыл бұрын
Modern Yakuza might be the second generation of Yakuza. First was result of Meiji-restauration which broke down old social order and left many samurai penniless so they became criminals.
@vksasdgaming94723 жыл бұрын
@@firecattle With that classification line between second and third generation is quite blurry while first and second have much clearer separation. If I remember correctly yakuza got their name from gambling term similar to "seven high" and former samurai were hired by gambling groups as enforcers and thus formed first generation. Quite interesting anomaly in organized crime.

Yakuza are still prevelant in today's Japan. I was just a year ago on an exchange in Japan and I remember how we needed to walk in groups from at least 5 to the train station as somebody who looked like Yakuza had been spotted near the school. I didn't see the person but there were at least 3 police cars on the way as we walked.

Yakuza vs Russian mafia is basically the plot of one of Black Lagoon manga arc, as for the result, let's just say the Russian mafia goes all Spetsnaz on the Yakuza's.
@mitrogulf40734 жыл бұрын
If you watch the program about traveling "Inside out" where the reporter was able to talk with the right hand of the boss Yakuza in Tokyo, they talked about the similarities between the Russian Mafia and the Japanese. As a result, the Japanese are more traditionalist and Hierarchical, the Russian Mafia was more of a "gang's" because of anarchy of 90s. The post-soviet people, who understood how naive the Russians were, took advantage of this position to rob even the poor people in young and weak Russian Federation, those with whom they had studied and worked at the factory just yesterday. These were vile people who became hostages of the situation and forced them to take such a path of bloody bandit, while they also became those who supported this situation. Simply put, a certain ouroboros of chaos and misfortune. In clothes, they differed more. The Russian mafia was divided into a kind of unspoken hierarchy. At first, the bandits were "gopniks", street thugs and thieves. Then, they became “sixes”, already under the wing of a particular group, performing what they could be thugs. Later they became "thieves." From clothes, at first it was Adidas training suits, then jeans and leather jackets, and then expensive suits. The bandits drove used cars from Germany and the cars of late USSR, the "younger" bandits drove a VAZ-2109, as it was called a "chisel", those who had a little more money drove a Volvo 940 "swede", then the Mercedes W124 "wolf", BMW E34 "shark", BMW E38 "bumer", Mercedes W140 "boar", Toyota Land Cruiser 80 "jap or cruise", Mitsubishi Pajero "tank or mitsu", Jeep Grand Cherokee "Just Jeep". There was a funny story with these cars. Because of this Jeep, many, many years later, any crossover or SUV was called (Jeep). BMW was a car a little lower in class than a Mercedes, it was used by (thugs) in disassembly due to its speed, it is more aggressive, it was even given an alternative name in Russian "Fighting Vehicle of Thieves" "Boevaya Machina Vorov". BMW have since called "Bumer", and Mercedes called "Merin" or "Merce". And these cars were firmly entrenched with thieves, corrupt officials or bandits. Especially if they are black and have "expensive license plates." Later, the smarter and possibly meaner of "mafia" betrayed their comrades, began to cooperate with the police or bribe them for freedom, and became government officials. So this is not a joke, many in the government of the Russian Federation, former criminals, fraudsters, thieves, deceivers and so on. So technically, the Mafia has achieved what they wanted. Many Mafia want the police and lawyers to be on their side. But in Russia it turned out that now they don’t pay them. For they are their superiors...

@@radjadawamindra697 That's not really a fair comparison, frankly. Hotel Moscow aren't really mafiya, they are a literal former Airborne Infantry battalion, so of course the yakuza had no chance against a trained, experienced unit of men who had been to real war.

Just got to see his awesome tattoo and play video games with him. The detail they do on those tattoos is amazing! Very beautiful. His father was very polite and very smart. Didn't know they were Yakuza until they went back to Japan. Friend called and told me. I honestly didn't think anything of it.
