My great uncle fought the Japanese and got captured. He was treated like a slave and was forced to help build the Burma railway. He got all the didseases like maleria but none killed him in the war. 30 years after the end of it all he died of an unknown illness that had been killing his liver for years. Really sad.

@dragon - True. The simple fact is Japan has never (and simply refuses) to fully acknowledge and confront their wartime atrocities. This behavior has its roots in many Japanese's belief that they are somehow racially and culturally different/superior than their mainland neighbors despite the fact that Japan's people and culture came from China and Korea. Thus, from their perspective since the war crimes were committed against those they see as inferior, they don't believe it's necessary for them to fully acknowledge much less truly apologize for their war crimes.

@@sittingbackandwatchingital3845 The Russians were known for their total war mentality, so the bloody tactics employed to demoralize the American forces would have been simply brushed off by the Red Army. In fact, if they tried booby-trapping Soviet bodies or leaving disfigured remains of Soviet prisoners in front of the Red Army, the Red Army would respond 10 fold with more brutal reprisals. American planners believed that complete destruction of Japan was the only way to win, and Russia would have no qualms with torching every foot Japan, even the sections that surrender.

I know I’m super late to this but to answer one of your questions. during ww2 Japan wanted to station troops in Thailand that way it would be easier to invade British Malaya and British Burma. So they sent a message to Thailand basically saying if Thailand didn’t allow Japan to station troops there then they would invade and do it themselves. When Thailand took too long to respond Japan invaded and Thailand agreed to allow troops to be stationed there and became an ally of Japan.

The Japanese hostility towards surrender initially surprised American Marines at Guadalcanal. I think it lead to an increasing use of flame based weapons and heavy naval bombardment that Americans would have been more reluctant to use against a less determined foe. Fun story, anyone heard of the piped piper of Tinian? He spoke Japanese and saved a lot of Japanese by convincing them to surrender.

There was a problem with the constitution of Japan at that time, and nobody had the right to make decisions. Tojo did not order a war, and each representative was deliberated and approved by the Emperor. The Prime Minister, the Army Minister, and the Navy Minister all wanted to avoid the war, but they didn't want to seem weak to the public, so they were waiting for someone to stop it first. However, nobody told to stop, so entered the war.The Army and the Navy competed, puppeting the Emperor and gaining consent, and started their respective wars. As in the Samurai era, the Emperor was a puppet and the more powerful army had the power to decide.

An open letter to those who think we don't need teachers to teach: True educators (teachers, parents and the like) understand how to properly use education video shorts like this one. I am sure that the person or people for "Simple History" understand the importance of research, editing and analysis used in creating these well-made shorts. They can do that, because those are all skills that are meant to be taught and practiced in school. To those who think it's easy to learn through videos alone: Please don't confuse "interesting and short information" as the only factors in how people learn. If there is no follow-up, or extensions as context as these videos do, then these videos are simply just that; informative, but "one-way" animations. The job of a teacher is to give meaning to context and tools to give students for honing skills related to understanding what is being presented to them. In essence, a Teacher should care about kids as they care about their craft and profession. Believe me: I've had seemingly boring teachers as a child as well. But for every boring teacher, there are always educators that make learning fun and meaningful. Trust the process... from a teacher who was also a student like you. Peace. :)
