We're thrilled to be growing our own food again and just in time for the summer weather. We plant potatoes, cabbage, onions, greens and celery transplants. There's still so much more building and planting to be done but for now we relax with a fireweed shoot and caribou steak dinner.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

About 5 weeks and counting till our fam of 4, and pets, makes the 4,200 mile journey moving from northern NY to Fairbanks! Our house here is under contract and our new house outside FAI is also under contract. The excitement and anticipation of our new adventure is overshadowed by the immense logistics and stress just to get there. You two, and this awesome channel, are a big inspiration for my wife and I. Watching your episodes helps us unwind and keep our 'eye on the prize" navigating all this chaos. Thank you so very much and we wish you much success.

@@JosephTMeiroseIV Aloha. Drove up the first time in ‘92 after graduating from UF. Yellowstone, and Olympic national park in Washington were some of my favorite stops. The Alkan wasn’t fully paved back then, it is now. Check your jack and spares. Don’t let your tank get less than half, and stay far back from big rigs, unless you want a new windshield. Bring a decent camera and lens, you’ll see critters. Double check your vehicle for drug paraphernalia or stray ammo, and make sure your passports are up to date. No felons or DUIs. This is just stuff that I went through on my two trips to Alaska. And I’d do it again. Enjoy the trip, you might not ever get the chance to do it again.

Hey guys, I've managed a large community garden for a while and we tracked what was planted by numbering the raised gardens, similar to a street address, using spray paint, numbering and lettering intervals on each bed. Then, we kept a simple spreadsheet with what was planted and when it's expected harvest date is. You may find that's a much better way to manage and track what's been planted and what beds require rotation.

My first memory with gardening was slicing potatoes and planting them with my father. As I child, I thought it was rather amazing you could slice them up and they would grow, plus you could take something that looked like a russet and some slices produced red potatoes, and some purple, and some the golden... I had never seen red or purple potatoes before that.

I love what you said about the potatoes, "...don't know WHO'S going to make the cut", and not 'WHICH' ones are going to make the cut, as if those potatoes are your friends. lol Look at all those food babies! ...ending with a good-looking dinner! Yum.

Very professional job with your gate. I hope a moose or other animal doesn’t accidentally hit it and get, devastating 😢. Your garden is going to be so beneficial for you now and winter. Love the idea of planting flowers. 😊

We absolutely love your channel!! My husband and I are veterans and are into the homestead lifestyle for ourselves and our children. We felt your loss of Beau (not sure of spelling), but have had a litter of 4th generation Grand night champion bluetick coonhound pups we would like you to have one of. We recently visited Alaska and understand the need for protection of animals or firearms and have a growing love of our animals and homestead. The challenges it brings are learning experiences we can only grow from.

I have been so bummed you haven't had a garden in so long. I love your gardening talks! Potatoes and cabbage ...yes! My grandmother used to raise collards in her hotbeds in the winter. The greens would not be as green as in summer but they were still delicious. Lemon balm is a good mosquito repellant but I don't know if you can grow it up there. We used marigolds as well as citronella. I look forward to more gardening and preserving videos!

When you laid out all the plants it looks like a garden center. Those onions! Wow! That is quite a tedious job. Never say Eric does all the hard work. Oh! And that dinner at the end! I would love to be your dinner guest.

So glad you are gardening again! Awesome fence, guessing it will last a lifetime. Based on my experience, raised beds are the only way to go. Keeps everything neat and tidy, contains the soil, reduces water usage, helps to maintain soil temperatures, and gives you a small seat for sitting when planting or harvesting. Plus, the easiest way to water with a hose. I first used raised beds, (3 feet wide X 12 feet long X 1 foot high / deep), in a backyard garden in Menlo Park, CA, in the 1970s ... using the French Intensive method. The 3 foot width gave me more room to plant the crops, close together, and include companion crops, herbs, and flowers. Your soil amendments are spot on for the first year: native soil, manure, compost, and amendments. Next year, test your soil and rotate crops. Keep a diary to keep track of successes and failures. My guess is that you are going to have a massive harvest this year! Best wishes!!!

Good to see you guys are planting different vegetables in your organic homestead 😊 Paying attention, gardening with joy, feeding the soil with nutrients, sharing your abundance with others, and showing thanks for harvest through acknowledgement. Keep gardening, working, cooking, eating, hunting, fishing, camping, canning and smiling.

Another note put a cover crop over the empty beds to add soil protection and nitrogen fixer. Also transplant your favourite herbs and bring into the cabin for fresh herbs in the winter.
