4 REASONS FOR MONOCHROME
1- SIMPLICITY
The reason I like monochromatic palettes is because they are simple. It is easy to develop skills while maintaining a great sense of liveliness. At the same time you’re learning the fundamentals that can be applied to a wider variety of colors - particularly with the Apelles palette.
2- FUNDAMENTALS ARE PRIMARY
In my opinion the best paintings are not great because they were “creative” with color choices but rather show mastery of the fundamentals. They also tend to lack color or at least disparity between colors and instead focus on overall harmony, atmosphere, and most importantly the story!!
3- COMPLEXITY IS UNNECESSARY
The fact is, you don’t need a wide variety of color to make a compelling painting. I would argue that wider variety is actually a disadvantage. It’s more about what you’re doing with the color.
4- ETHEREAL BEAUTY
There’s a certain ethereal beauty in the great reduced color works that actually can’t be achieved with more colors.

Hey Nic, I will be at Odd’s school in a couple of weeks for a couple of months. I’m at an advanced level and usually use 18 colors on my pallet and usually do not use black. I did start limited with 8 colors snd ivory black was the color we used. I’m going back to limited Notice it does simplify the thinking process for me. The colors I was given to bring is titanium white, yellow ochre, mars yellow, vermillion, mars black. Not loving mars black as its warm brown when mixed. I have never used mars yellow in flesh, i gets you can get more orange. What I’m having a problem with is trying to get the Vermillion to be more cool for the insides of the eyes, especially the Plica. even when I mix a little black into it, it becomes a rust color as opposed to using a Liz in. Any recommendations your videos are excellent I follow you on Instagram.😊

Amazing video! Definitely helped me jump into using limited palettes instead of every color I had! Question: what kind of palette knife do you use/size? I seem to have issues with what I find.

In it's simplest form, the Apelles/Zorn palette is a huge tuning of orange.

Ivory black. Lead-based white preferable over titanium, safety and legality permitting!

Can you be specific on the red and yellow you are using? Looks like yellow ochre, but the read looks like a cad red medium? Do tell.

Sennelier: Chinese vermillion. The most powerful red you will ever use. The tiniest drop of the stuff can turn all your colors on your palette to red.. it’s a bully color lol but it last forever also Edit: spelling

I’d go with cad red light, yellow ochre and ivory black, plus a lead-based white if available (and comfortable using it).

If in fact Apelles ever even existed, and he could go into a contemporary art supply store, he would come out with cadmium red light, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, viridian, Prussian blue, quinacridone red, titanium white, and half a dozen other colors. Again, if he even existed, this so called Apelles palette was used, as nothing else was available. Using it, is akin to trading your BMW in for a 1940s era Willys Overland automobile.

Other colours were readily available in Apelles' days, except of the ones you've listed.
