Great exercise to loosen up and not overthink it. It really encouraging for me as a viewer when you note your mistakes and say, oh well, moving on, can’t worry about it. The end result is still fine. Very useful to quickly paint in three values too. Will try this. Thx Teoh.

I always need to lay down some markings first and can't just draw like this with hard ink. I have a water brushpen with literally a few drops of ink that I make marks with and you don't see it when the drawing is done. It's so fun using real ink, I started in digital and never used pens and ink before a year ago. I dont know why but there is something really fun about real pens/brushpens and ink that digital doesn't capture the same way.

I loved seeing you do these sketches. Even though you weren’t able to add details and you were drawing so quickly, all the sketches successfully conveyed the proper perspective and feel of the buildings. I think you are a terrific sketch artist!

I used to enjoy urban sketching before I got busy with my work again and before winter happened. Was never without my sketchbook. I really long to draw again, but you just reminded me how I don't need to spend an hour just to do a sketch when I've got a ton of photos I took from my old trips. I can always just stick some gray ink in one of my empty brush pens for shading. Thanks for this video. You reminded me how much I enjoy urban sketching again and I'll go make a few sketches again tomorrow. 🤗

Hi Teoh thank you very much for posting this video (and all your videos actually). This one was especially helpful to me. In fact I had a breakthrough. I always try to draw too perfect with too many details but my skill doesn't allow this because I have errors, especially perspective. So my sketches look "off" because I tried to do too much. Watching you draw these scenes in 1 minute was very inspriring. So after watching the first time, I got out the sketchbook and followed along for the 2nd viewing. In many of the scenes I thought "This is too complicated, I'll skip this one" but I decided to give it a shot and after doing the first 6 I realized I can draw with less precision and less details and it works better for me because my errors are not as noticeable. I hope that makes sense. I probably took around 10 minutes on each and they don't look as good as your 1 minute sketch but for me I thought they looked good and it's very encouraging. I now feel like I can sketch anything. It probably won't be great, but at least I can follow your steps and simplify and get a likeness that is recognizeable. This and your other video on simplifying details have been most helpful. Thanks!

Amazing challenge, Teoh. Congratulations! A very good way to start 're-thinking' how to simplify complex buildings in such short time. Just as information: The building with round façade and black dome named Metropolis, that you sketched twice (starting minutes 04:30 and 09:00 of the video) is in Madrid, Spain.

Very helpful sketching video, it seems like I would probably not do a good job myself having to work quickly but this is a great place to start, I did see the person in the background even afterward, using the dark color black can add so much definition, and abstractness I like a lot, detail is good, thanks for bringing this to us,

Fascinating. Love watching your process and how you simplify things for speed. This would help us traveling sketchers! Do you fill your gray brush pens yourself? What kind of ratio do you use in the ink mixtures -- ink:water (for the light gray and dark gray). Or do you just buy pre-loaded brush pens?
@teohyc
@teohyc 3 жыл бұрын
For the mid gray, it's just Lexington Gray from the bottle. The lighter gray is diluted Lexington Gray. Knowing how much water and ink to add is through trial and error. I fill the brush pens myself.

Barcelona is a pretty nice place with lots of interesting places, altho it is too big for me. I prefer small cities as they have the convenience of cities while maintaining some sort of familiar town feel. Btw you chose La Sagrada Familia? I think it's one of the most difficult things to draw 😂. Great video Teoh ✨

I would set my timer to a ring tone that freaks me out and watch my pen shoot across the page. I have an exagerated startle response. Very fun when playing games with a timer like "Perfection"!
