Great job of demonstrating this software. I'm sold! I was a gcode programer for 25 years and used a CAD CAM software called Mastercam, it worked on the same principal. Good software is very important to the finished product.

I purchased this software and it works pefectly for what I need. I used to use Flashprint which was a software used for the Flashforge Dreamer. Its safe to say that Flashprint was so limited that it effected the quality of my prints. With Simpify 3D all my issues that I had before with Flashprint were solved. It's now easier for me to print with supports that can easily be broken off. Orginally, Flashprint supports would end up being to solid and hard and there were no settings to adjust this. Simplify 3D definately is a easy software to use and will make 3D printing life easier.

The videos are well done and I applaud that. However, they paint a much different picture of the product than was my experience. Before purchasing, I emailed the developer several times asking very specific questions about the ONE feature S3D purported to support that I was most interested in - "changing slicing configurations for different parts of the model" (this is a quote from the company from 3/14/2014 last year). It turns out - and they have actually changed their description - that this feature is actually BY LAYER. A very different capability and one that I explicitly asked and was given a less than honest answer. And, once I figured this out, I discovered that the feature requires knowing "the layer" by height, not the layer number. So if you want to do something special on layers 3 to 5 you need to know that layer 3 starts at 0.60mm (or wait, is it 0.75mm?) and 5 ends at 1.20mm. Very difficult to use effectively. Now, almost a year later, some fundamental issues with S3D still have not been addressed. One of the big ones (and a show stopper for me) is the primitive infill support. The S3D forum is filled with infill-related issues due to the unsophisticated way it creates a loose infill grid. Finished parts are frequently described as "mushy" and that was my experience. There are many other things that make you scratch your head and ask "have they actually ever used this program themselves to print parts?" I gave the product a thorough checkout after purchase and ended up requesting a refund. There was not one thing that it did particularly well (for me - I realize that others have different requirements). I do not use slicer-generated supports (I design support structures into my models if needed, this is much more efficient and gives much better results). The lack of any customer support was a big issue. My license key did not work and it took the company 3 days to respond! (and this was during the work week, not over a weekend). Questions emailed to support took an average of 48 hours for an incomplete reply to my question/s. Many times, I provided the explicit details on what I had tried, my configuration, etc and received a response to try something that I had already told support I had done. It was if they didn't even read my questions, seriously. I you go to their forums to post a question for help, you'll discover that your initial posts are moderated. It took 4 days - I kid you not - for my initial post to be approved. And to make matters worse, I had to make a second post and have it moderated before being allowed to make unmoderated posts. All of this just left a really bad impression about the company and the product. I would consider myself to be a sophisticated user with many years of 3D printing, CAD design, and slicing experience. Some of the glitzy visualization features may appeal to new users but "point cloud" and "normals" views? Seriously? Why waste development resources on "features" like this (and there are many others)? Caveat emptor - read their forum, release notes and make an informed decision. At some point, when I see some progress in the areas that were show stoppers for me, I'll try it again - as long as I can get a money back guarantee again. I understand that they only honor this one time, so that might be an issue.
@Voidward9 жыл бұрын
Michael Hackney It does do different profiles for different part of the model. You simply have to make multiple profiles, separate your model into different parts in your modelling software, then assign different profiles to each piece. They even have a tutorial on multi-part printing on the support section of their website and have had it for at least the past year which outlines that you can do this. In their example the models were separate objects and not overlapping - though there's nothing stopping you from doing that. I've printed probably thousands of models and none of them have ever been mushy, so I'm not sure what the issue is there. Perhaps you're printing with too few shells? Too few bottom/top layers? I mean if you're doing one shell then I can see how this would be true, maybe 2. Most stuff I print is 3, and no prints have even seen soft or mushy for me unless I was using soft filament. Never had problems with the forum, and don't particularly remember posts needing moderation. Maybe first few posts they check for spambots, but I'm certain I didn't have to wait for most of my posts to show up. They actually do listen to suggestions though, I've had things implemented that I've asked for, so they do read forums, they just rarely respond themselves and let the community help each other. Worth noting that the new version has many new infill options: www.simplify3d.com/simplify3d-announces-version-3-0-of-universal-3d-printing-software/ Might be worth it to give it a new try, also good dual extruder support. Slices ridiculously fast.

Looks nice, but having a visual rotation off the xy plane is very handy, especially with snaps like Cura (which also then "snaps" to the floor)... It seems like nice software, but the lack of ability to rotate visually vertically is odd. its like using windows but having to go to the command line for some of the normal daily operations. Combine the best of Cura's positioning functions and you'd have a winner.

I bought Simplify3D v2.2.2 and discovered that it lacks basic standard functionality: 1. No "Edit" menu. 2. No Undo-Redo commands. 3. No way to assign meaningful colors to objects on the platform (say black for your object and white for supports). 4. No way to align objects on the build platform in relation to one another. Necessary for two color dual-extrusion prints. 5. No way to easily place objects flat on the bed: a Z offset of "0" puts objects off in space. 6. No "group" command or other way to edit or change parameters for multiple objects at once; you have to select each one and change parameters sequentially. I've only been using it for a couple of days, but I'm disappointed. If it were free or shareware, that would be one matter, but for $140 I want finished software.

Hi Jeremy. I just purchased this software based 100% on your recommendation. I was having difficulty with replicator G heating my bed for an ABS build when I was actually using PLA. Might have been just a software setting I was missing , but I couldn't figure it out. So with Simplify 3d I've got total control over my temps and of course everything else. However, models sometimes will not load and I get the beach ball symbol. I'm on a Mac. When I go to the preview process screen, I have garbage on the screen and can't preview things there at all. I have a pretty fast Mac with 12gb of ram and I'm only printing small test files at the moment. Still new. First day with my Wanhao Duplicator 4X. Once I got the G code file and .x3g files onto an SD card things printed very nice, but I would still like to be able to use the previews such as you are showing in your demo. Especially given the price! Any ideas or help you could give would be awesome! Thanks for the video!

Hi, Pete. That sounds like it might be worth contacting the developer directly about (support@simplify3d.com). I haven't had issues loading model previews, and I'm also on a Mac. I run it on two Macs, actually - one is a Macbook Pro, and the other is a Mac Pro. It runs fine on both. So I would have to assume the issue is either with the models you're trying to load, or some kind of software issue the developer may be able to help troubleshoot. Try running your test models through this online repair tool and see if you're still having issues after that. modelrepair.azurewebsites.net

I finally bought this program but I'm having some difficulties with it. When it puts down it's anchor bead, it pulls from it leaving a tiny stringy line of filament that I have to reach in and pull out so it doesn't tangle with the extruder while it prints. Also, I had a cell phone case print on it over night (it was about a 3 hour print) and this morning the supports and raft were so hard to pull off that they chipped off parts of the finished piece. The raft even broke off a piece of the case from the edge, and the whole thing was hard as a rock. Have you come across any of these sort of issues?

Nicely done. This software has a great feature set. Just bought it and starting to play with it. My first printer was an UP! printer which works great with a minimum of hassle. Went to the Makerbot Replicator 2X for the dual extrusion and larger build volume, but Makerware is very frustrating and does some stupid things. Things I can build easily and with great quality on the UP! are very hard to do with the same quality using Makerware. I'm hoping this will make the Makerbot print experience more like the UP!.

@3duniverseOrgWelcomesYou10 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works very well with the FlashForge Creator Pro Dual. It has native support for that printer, so it's very easy to configure. For a good first layer, I set the first layer height to be about .3mm and the first layer speed to 50%. So if I'm printing at .2mm layer height, I would set the first layer height to 150%. If I'm printing at .1mm, I would set the first layer height to 300%. This ensures a thicker first layer which will give better adhesion.

Question for you. I just purchased Simplify 3D. I have a particular model with relatively thin walls.I don't know how thin they are exactly but I'm certain they are not too thin to print.When the model is imported it looks great. After the model is sliced, the visualization shows that the thin section is gone. I'm positive that it's not too thin. Is there an area that controls the quality of the slice? After slicing why does the visualization not look just like the model? Why are thin sections being deleted? Great video. Thanks for making it.

+DevenneyGroup Is it possible that those sections are thinner than your nozzle diameter? If you're using a 0.4mm nozzle, sections that are thinner than that wouldn't print.

This looks like absolutely fantastic software. It really seems to give you full access to the guts of the printer, and all the fiddly little variables, finally making it easy to treat it as what it really is; a CNC machine with an FDM extrusion head for a tool. I think you're right though that the price is going to put some people off. I mean, I just bought my first 3D printer for $550 (And then it dropped in price another 10%...*sigh*) and that was already quite a struggle with the sad condition of my finances. Maybe they could take a page from the CadSoft EAGLE playbook and make a Freeware version for non-commercial use that is fully functional but has certain limitations. Like say, no features that don't apply to inexpensive hobbyist printers. So, everything up to a MakerBot Replicator dual extruder and its clones. Because if you can afford to do more than cobble together a RepRap or buy a Chinese-bootleg MakerBot on eBay for $500, you can probably afford the software.

Is there an option for soluble support structures to use cheap pla to print most of the support structure but then for the last couple of mm inbetween the support structure and the 3d model to use soluble material? Of course you would need a printer that can handle 2 materials at once. Any idea ? Anyone?
@3duniverseOrgWelcomesYou7 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is. In the latest version of Simplify3D, you can edit your process settings and go to the Support tab. There, you will find options for Support Material and for Dense Support. Set the Support Material to print with extruder 1 and set the Dense Support Material to print with extruder 2. Then you can print most of the supports using PLA and print the last few layers of the supports using PVA or other soluble material.

I bought this software and I like it a great deal so far but I have one big complaint: for $140 you'd expect real documentation. They offer only a basic guide and some tutorials. For many of the advanced features (the only reason to consider this software) you have to go to the forum and ask how others did it. I expect that from open source programs but not from something you have to buy for $140. I do like editing supports and setting sparse infill (though I can do the same skeinforge with the skin plugin). I also like the ability to set different properties at different layer heights so I can make a thicker heavier base but a lighter top. Slicing speeds are also very good. If you are using ReplicatorG you'll like the performance and if you just use Makerbot's you will LOVE the performance. I've sliced things in a minute using Simplyfy3D that Makerbot never returned from. But again the biggest issue is the lack of real documentation for all the advanced settings.
@3duniverseOrgWelcomesYou10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Dennis. I shared your feedback with the Simplify3D team, and they acknowledged that documentation is an area they need to improve. They're actively working on it and will hopefully address that in their next version release.

3D Universe Actually I've stumbled across a problem changing filaments while printing one model.. If I want to change the filament in the middle of a printing an object (I only have one extruder on Makerbot 2) I tell it to stop printing at a certain height, then I change the filament and tell it to print the model starting at the height I left off at. When it moved the end of the extruder across the plate to continue printing however the extruder tip is too close to the plate and it slaps into the model. This works perfectly fine if I manually pause and change filaments with the Makerbot so it seems odd this is happening. I suppose I could edit the g-code to accomplish move the head up higher but one would think this "just works"
@3duniverseOrgWelcomesYou10 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dennis. I reached out to Simplify3D about this, and apparently, it's a common issue, so they prepared a 1-page PDF explaining how to do this. See if this helps... goo.gl/XZ6hEj Why is it that you're stopping the print to change filament. Isn't there a pause function? Or is that feature added with the Sailfish firmware? I can't recall. Whenever I need to change filament, I just choose pause, and then it resumes where it left off.
@Denbo6810 жыл бұрын
3D Universe The pause/restart function does exist with makerbot firmware and works fine. I wanted to use the software layer height feature so I did not need to monitor my prints. Say for example I want to print something 1/3 red, 1/3 white, 1/3 blue (we have kids competing in RoboCup Jr in Brazil and want their robots looking more 'patriotic'). If I use the pause button, I have to sit, watch the monitor ,and stop at 33% and 66% to change filaments. I tend to do work while things print and did not want to have to sit and watch my print. Instead it would be easier for me to tell the print to stop at a certain height and then have it restart at that height to continue. So if my print is 90 mm high I can tell it to stop at 30mm and 60mm to change filaments. I thought this was the main purpose of the starting and stopping a print at a certain height feature. Thanks for the PDF. As I suspected it required adding in gcode. I'll give it a try later today.
@3duniverseOrgWelcomesYou10 жыл бұрын
Dennis Mabrey I see... Well, if that doesn't work for you, perhaps you would consider the Sailfish firmware. One of the features that adds is a "Pause @ Z Pos" feature, accessible from the printer's LCD menu. It let's you specify a Z height in mm at which the printer will pause automatically. If you'd like to try that, check out my video tutorial for the Sailfish upgrade process here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJPGqneKadKoqdU That's for a FlashForge Creator, but that's a Makerbot clone, so it should be pretty much the same process for you. You can always revert to the Makerbot firmware if you prefer it.

Overall, I like the program too. Control over support material is it's strongest point. But for a commercial product it has more flaws and weaknesses than I find reasonable. It is buggy and will crash without a lot of provocation. The GUI is "eye candy", but not very refined. Patterned infill extrusion methodology badly flawed. Exporting of .fff (.xml) config files is flawed. There are free options that I find as good or better in many cases. My favorites are: 1) Repetier Host w/ bundled Slic3r and CuraEngine. Great visualization tools. 2) MatterControl - also w/ bundled slicers. Supports x3g files. Visualization slightly lacking, but good enough.

So, this is 3D printing slicer for dummies @ $140? What can this do that Slic3r cant do for free? ...not to mention the over welling support from the community that comes with Slic3r .
@Voidward9 жыл бұрын
Brian Link It actually has considerably more features than any other slicer I've used. You can separate your model into different parts and use different settings for each part. This lets you do some very advanced stuff and manually fix a lot of the limitations your 3D printer by forcing it to print parts that might have very thin walls or by making higher quality external features. It's also extremely fast. I'm doing a comparison right now just for curiosity's sake with the newest version of slic3r - a half million poly zbrush sculpt, about 4 inches cubed 66 micron layers, 4 shells. Slic3r is still working away at over 15 minutes, not sure how long it'll take... S3D slice was 20 seconds. It absolutely crushes every other slicer in speed. If all you care a bout is cost, then there's no convincing you, but if you want a professional tool that's going to do it better and faster and that's worth something to you, I suggest you give S3D a try.
@brianlink3919 жыл бұрын
Stan Velijev Nice! From slicing point of view they can take some time. Although I don't print at small layers mainly just at .32 millimeters height my times are usually about 1 minute for slicing. Although I have heard of extremely long slicing times on complicated models I personally have not experienced that. In the application that you're using it for it sounds like it's working well for you. If I was in the market for that need, it sounds like something I would definitely look at. I would suggest to include that in your video as a primary advantage along with the advanced editing. I create my model in the modeling software itself, while keeping in mind of the results I'm looking for. This slicer software can be a great tool for manipulating models that your self did not design specifically for your printing needs.

Doesn't Cura and Slicer3 do all this for free! I would sooner use them and donate some money to Open Source developers...

Ant Scranney I've donated to the people who work on sailfish opensource firmware for makerbots. I've also purchased this software. Both were good investments. Those slicers don't have all the same features, aren't as fast, and based on some year old experiences with slic3r, are far more buggy. Can't say much for Cura since I only tried a few slices with it, but slic3r in particular really mangled my models a lot of the time and did some really wonky shit with the toolpath. Doesn't happen at all with S3D. I'm doing a test slice with slic3r right now just out of curiosity about how development has progressed. It took 20 minutes 17 sec. S3D did the same slice in (i shit you not) 20 seconds. I mean if you don't value your time, then maybe it's all the same to you, but there's a lot of value to me in saving 95% on slice times. What if I did the slice, checked over the preview and realized I missed a feature or want to change some speeds? Another 20 minute slice. Plus I didn't even have supports on the slic3r model because automatic supports would be overkill and unfair, so it should have taken longer. Looking over the gcode preview it's still doing a lot of wonky shit with a lot of solid infill inside the model where it doesn't make any sense, and some of it randomly at slower speeds than other even though it isn't doing topfill. So this print would no doubt also take longer because of all this unnecessary solid infill, wasting more time.

Why would I want S3D over Cura which of course is free?

Cura has come a long way since this video was made. It's a very solid program. The main benefit of S3D is the ability to customize placement of supports. With Cura, supports can be off, touching build plate, or everywhere. With S3D, you can control which specific parts of the geometry have supports. Whether or not this is important depends on the kinds of objects you want to print.

osamabinsmokin Not infill. You can customize the placement of support structures - the ones that go outside of the printed object to support overhangs. To customize I fill, you would have to divide your object into multiple STL files. Then you could assign different print profiles to each object, some with infill and some without.

3D Universe Uhhh yes you can? Didn't you at any point wonder what the "Processes" window is? You set a layer height for each process and you can change every setting separetely, including infill. That is a very neat feature as you can set easy or straight sections print fast with bigger layer heights and more detailed areas slower with smaller layer height

Right, but a process can only be assigned to an individual object. The question was whether you can switch off infill for specific points in a model. As I said before, you would need to divide the model into multiple STL files using something like Netfabb. Then you could create a separate process for each model and control infill and other settings for each process.

I guess you can read it that way too. That would be a welcome feature though, or maybe manually adding infill to where you need it.

I have the xyz da Vinci printer, its software cannot do 100th of what Simplify3D can do, so for me it would be worth getting if it will work with my printer. Does anyone know if Simplify 3D is compatible with the Da Vinci XYZ printer?
