What are your thoughts on how the Olympus E-M10 Mark III feels to use? Do you have a favorite portable camera?

Literally just put a fully charged battery into my E-M10 MKIII and got my 17mm F1.8 packed for a work trip tomorrow when your video popped up. Great small camera, excellent ergonomics and pretty much pocket sized. I have 4 Olympus bodies and this is probably my favourite. If I need all the bells and whistles I bring out the EM1 MK II. For casual shooting the E M10 MKIII does the job.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your E-M10 Mark III - it's a really nice camera. I tried the OM-5, but I didn't like its bulky body. For everyday photography, the E-M10 Mark III is just perfect! Have a great trip with plenty of interesting moments to capture!

I have the MarkII version of this camera. A nice feature of the MarkII that the MarkIII does not have is the "Myset" feature. I don't do video and this little camera is rather underrated. Like you I have very large hands and I invested in a aftermarket grip / baseplate by Oben and it makes a world of difference in the handling.

The Mark II is nice too, it has the same shape. Indeed, the Mark III doesn't have the 'Myset' feature (unfortunately). I was thinking about getting an aftermarket grip, but I prefer to keep the camera as small and light as possible. I quickly noticed how well the thumb and front grip work together, so I decided to leave the camera as it is. An extra grip can make a big difference, I agree - I might try one in the near future, but I'm glad Olympus designed this camera well enough for most hands. Thanks for your input! I appreciate it!

Excellent review! Finally, someone addresses handling .with smaller hands in mind. Much appreciated by this 73 year old petite person who finds most DSLRs not ergonomically designed for small hands like mine that find many DSLRs cumbersome because of weight and design. I have subscribed and look forward to more such reviews.😊

Nice video straight to the point. I had the mark i version of this camera and it was my bread and butter. I feel like the cons you listed for the mark iii are not deal breakers but you did a good job highlighting relevant issues for certain users. Another potential area to discuss is how she balances with heavier vintage lenses and where are the tiny weather sealed primes? 😢

The Mark I, a classic. When it came out, I was saying goodbye, after 5 years, to the Olympus E-410 (my first ever dslr) - I had many great experiences with it. After this, I used Canon cameras, but now, even if I still use Canon, I'm back to Olympus. It's not just nostalgia, their cameras are truly special. Lens balancing is, indeed, another important factor to consider, and I don't want to get started on weather sealing 🙂 - It would've been great if the Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 (+ others) and the Mark IV had weather protection. Thanks for your encouraging comment! 😀

Great video... another minor con in my opinion is the location of the ON/OFF switch (same on the E-M5III... it prevents one handed operation at startup... I'm eyeing this camera as an affordable travel cam option, so if there's a workaround, let me know! ;)
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! It is a good travel cam option. Regarding the ON/OFF switch, there's no workaround, unfortunately. However, it helps if you grab the camera as if you wanted to take a vertical portrait, holding the grip with your thumb and middle finger and stretching your index finger over the EVF. It takes some practice, but it works. :)

I bought an earlier version of this camera - the first Olympus E-M10 - from MPB and loved it. That is, until one of the 2 little magnets came loose that are behind the LCD screen, and blocked the screen from going back in position. I am not too sure of the functionality. Maybe to hold the screen to the body when folded in. Never could find anyone to tell me the best way to glue them back in. Wonder if on the Mark lll series, they have magnets. Other than that the camera is great to use
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 6 ай бұрын
Glad to hear that you like the Olympus E-M10. I don't know how to fix the magnets issue, how to glue them back. What I do know is that the Mark III version also uses a magnet (only one), which is positioned behind the left side of the screen.

Hi, thanks for the nice video. I've recently bought a Canon R10 to compansate some cons of my Olympus E-M10 m3, but still, I use my Olympus more frequent than my new Canon R10, I don't know why 😊But I guess it's related with a kind of photographic instinct, Olympus looks to me more initutiative with nice little 45 mm f/1.8 zuiko lens on it
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 9 ай бұрын
The E-M10 M3 is magnetic. They designed it very well and, being highly portable, of course it is our preferred choice when we go outside. The R10 is also nice; recent technology, great performance - I also want one for my videos, but I already have 4 cameras, so it'll wait. 😅

Is OM Systems going to upgrade this camera and give it the OM1 and OM5 treatment or phase it out?
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 5 ай бұрын
OM System has the answer to that, probably. The E-M10 Mark IV has some upgrades, when compared to the Mark III, but we must remember that all camera manufacturers implement "intentional limitations" on their lower-end models - a practice known as market segmentation. Nonetheless, even entry-level models are becoming quite potent over time. For example, look at Canon with their R50, which is a significant step up from the M50. Most likely, OM System will release a great E-M10 Mark V, but "intentional limitations" due to market segmentation will always be present across all camera brands.

Yes, you can use a tripod with this camera, but you won't be able to change the battery while the camera is on the tripod - the tripod mount will block the battery door.

If this is the camera you consider to be the best ergonomically, then how is it better than the mk iv? I'm not too familiar with either so it would be interesting to know.
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 9 ай бұрын
The mark IV is better, thanks to the 180 Degrees rotating screen. On top of that, its grip is even a bit better, but I don't have a mark IV, so the III is the best for me so far.

em 10 mark3 and 4 have some very ridiculous limitations deliberately set by Olympus. First, bracketing/keystone compensation/live composite are only available in AP mode. It is a P mode without giving you too many choices. Second, the functions that can be assigned to customisable buttons are very limited. Mostly they are magnification, teleconverter, and manual focusing, rather than some useful functions.
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 9 ай бұрын
For me, having more options for customizable buttons isn't a big issue. I also don't use bracketing, keystone compensation, or live composite. While I understand some people rely on these features, I believe most don't. However, these limitations, which could easily be fixed with a firmware update, are indeed frustrating. It's surprising they haven't addressed them yet. Despite these issues, this camera remains my go-to choice. Hopefully, future models will have fewer flaws. Thank you for mentioning this!

@@cameraexplorations Olympus just deliberately limited this low end model to avoid eroding their higher end models. However, they lose the opportunity to compete with Fuji system because of this mindset.
@cameraexplorations
@cameraexplorations 9 ай бұрын
@@bigtiger567 Yes, it was a deliberate limitation. Other camera brands also do this. I don't know about Fuji - from my observations, their deliberate limitations are not that harsh - they are, indeed, highly competitive lately.

Yes, but there are cameras, like the Panasonic Lumix G9/G90/G80 or Canon M6 Mark II that can shoot in 4k, with a simple press of the record button, even if the camera is in Manual Mode/Aperture/Shutter speed priority - with no need to turn the mode dial to the Video icon.

This video focuses on the ergonomics/handling of the E-M10 Mark III, but I understand the importance of having a microphone port. I was also a bit disappointed to see that it was missing. For videos, I use a different camera. This Olympus is primarily for everyday photography.
