I've owned the EM10ii for just over a year. As a Nikon DSLR user mainly, the EM10 has literally been my go to for travel and street. It's such a fantastic camera far above competitors at this price point. To call this a "beginner's camera" is laughable, this camera would be considered a prosumer enthusiast camera in the Nikon and Canon world. Thanks to you Robin and Rob Trek, I've been able to understand its vast capabilities and deep menu system. And thanks again for giving the EM10 the praise it deserves!

It’s truly a fantastic camera and so comfortable and reliable too. A part from the R2 kit lens , I use two prime sigma lenses , one for portraits and the other for walkabout . In short , the 30mm 2.8 Mkii art lens is glued to my EM10 Mkii all the time . Anybody looking for a light and very affordable camera body can get this for very little money and still take great shots . Robin , where the inspiration that proved to me that this would be the right camera and Rob helped to show me how to get the most out of it like Peter . My thanks to all you guys for the skills and confidence you gave somebody who loved film but needed something smaller and lighter to carry around .

Agreed. The OM-D E-M10 Mk III is a bargain used. I had one for a bit and loved it. Used it on some photowalks with a camera club and people were curious but then seemed to lose interest when they realized it was a M43 camera. IBIS and a tilt screen plus the Olympus 17mm or 14mm Panasonic make a perfect street photography setup.

I bought the Mark IV year specifically for street photography and I love it! I’ve used Nikon systems for over ten years but it could be a bear to carry around. The Olympus camera and lenses are so light and portable, enabling me to get more quick reaction shots. I’m beginning to branch out and trying the Scene functions which are fun, and I’m finding that I really like the built in monochrome profile. Thanks for another great video, Robin!

I don't do street photography but I am a big fan of the E-M10. I bought a used mk1 in 2015 and it very quickly became my first choice camera, some of my favourite photos were taken with it. I replaced it in 2020 with a used E-M1 ii, but came to miss the smaller camera. So last year I also bought a used E-M10 iii as well and that is now my travel camera. 👍

Totally agree with you, I treated myself to an om10 mark II that was more pleasant than my EM5 mark III for street photography, in particular because of its compactness, its tilting screen and the possibility of assigning myset feature on the wheel. Very pleasant to practice in hyperfocal or not with a 17 1.8 and I'm probably going to treat myself to the Pana 14 2.8 to fit the whole thing in my pocket.

I totally agree with your points. One year ago I bought an Olympus E-M10 IV, with the14-150 kit lens. I added the 17mm F1.8, the 12-40 Pro, and finally the ultrawide Laowa 7.5mm. Previously I had the Canon 6DII, which I still use willingly, but I must admit that the small E-M10 IV is a thousand times more comfortable, portable and manageable, both during travel and during mountain trekkings, and after a year of co-presence it has now surpassed the 6DII in terms of shooted photos (and for this I'm a little sorry for the innocent Canon, and I still try to use it whenever possible!)

My E-PL8 has a tilt screen, and that is one of my favorite things about it, but I think the E-M10 is just a more versatile camera for street photography because you have the smaller and less intimidating size of the E-PL8, better image stabilization, better controls, and an EVF if you need it

Hi Robin, thank you for your videos. I am using two MFT-combinations for streetphotography, FIRST is an OMD EM1 with a 15mm F4,5 lens version II from Voigtländer built for Leica (connected to the MFT system over an Novoflex-adapter ring). It gives 30 mm equivalent and has a so called focus tab, which gives the possibility to shoot in rangefinder manner with zone focusing. SECOND is an OMD EM1 MarkIII with an 17mm F1,2 lens from Olympus, which I use as a combination of autofocus operations and zone focusing with the PreMF - function of this camera. PreMF works good/ repeatable with primer lenses and has to be adjusted with real live distances (on my lens for example 2 m in reality comes to a camera value of 3,4 m). With this combination you can shoot like with a Leica Q (automatic / zone focusing), but with better adjustments in the manual distance range from 1 m to infinity, where all the new lenses have a very steep function (small turns lead to big distances changes, which makes them not very handy for manual focusing and in fact useless for zone focusing.)
@robinwong
@robinwong Жыл бұрын
Awesome, gld to know these cameras and setting work for you! I never use Pre-MF or zone focusing because, as I have shown with my many shots, I never miss focus, the AF on Olympus OM-D cameras are just so reliable.

Only thing missing is the ability to set the camera to a minimum shutter speed. Using a fast lens it might not be an issue, but you always run the risk using a shutter speed slower than required to freeze the action, when doing street photography (not street portraits). The positives however outweigh the negatives, and I do appreciate all metal body on the EM 10 mark II. These are good looking cameras. My favorite on the street is the Lumix GX-9 which has a setting for minimum shutter speed, a good dial setup, the newer 20MP sensor and engine, along with a rangefinder look and advantages. For a really - really light carry, the PEN PL-8 is super to use, mated with the Lumix 14mm lens. In a slightly heavier, slightly larger camera, the Canon RP, with the Canon Grip added, is great in hand, and the FF does have a bit more crop area ability. If a person desires a DSLR which is low priced, the Nikon D3500 takes great photos and has a long battery life. The focusing, and so many other benefits of the mirrorless systems, really makes the DSLR a limited choice, especially on the street. You simply get more keepers with say the GX-9 or any MFT camera compared to the DSLR, when shooting in a hurray -- things happen fast on the street. And I agree 100% that using zone focusing has too many limitations. Sometimes you want separation, and other times the light is low, you want to bumper that shutter speed. It is true zone can work out perfect as well -- what happens when the subject is not in the zone, but the shot is beaconing to be taken at that moment? The modern auto-focus is fast and accurate --- and yes, I mean contrast detect. Never have issues with contrast detect on any decent / modern MFT camera. And no, I am not using Lumix 20mm, and no longer using the Lumix 25mm f1.7 -- it got shelved. Keep smiling and pet the cats along the way, Loren

The EM10 MK III is my favourite every day use camera. I also have an EM1 MK II for more pro stuff, When I want to look touristy and get away with filming in places where you can get odd looks an EPL10 is great (it also has many other uses because of the brilliant tilt screen which is more versatile than the EM10's, Also from a suggestion from one of your previous videos I got out my old EPL1 and did some street photography around Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Covent Garden in London using the Panasonic 12-32 lens. Very pleased with the results and truly a pocket street photography camera (but don't use it for night street scenes unless you want motion blur or serious noise).

It all comes down to what you look for in the cameras. The E-M10 Mark IV has newer 20MP image sensor, more powerful 5-Axis IS, better AF, and has 4K video capability, which the earlier versions lack. So if you don't need these features/upgrades, the older versions should be more than good enough

I have an original E-M10 that I picked up about a year ago for a really good price. Because of it I sold my Nikon D5300. While I could technically get better and higher resolution photos with the Nikon, I found it was far harder and required so much editing of the RAW images to even match the JPEG output of the EM10. I also shoot RAW with the EM10 but spend much less time in OM Workspace. All of my favorite digital portraits and pictures of my family have been with the EM10. It has also been my experience that the range of quality with Olympus lenses is much better than Nikon lenses. All of the Olympus lenses I have used have had at least good quality, with my favorite being the 45mm F1.8, while I have used some real stinkers of Nikon lenses, including a 35mm F1.8 that had atrocious CA. I recently ordered a used E-M1 body to use for some wildlife photography.
@robinwong
@robinwong Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is not just about the image sensor, but the overall combination of system - image processing (RAW) and also lens quality which you have already described that contributed to the final results.

I have to say that m4/3 is almost the perfect fit for street photography. The cameras are smaller, lighter, and generally less expensive than a FF or even some APSC cameras, which makes it perfect for street, and most people (ie. thieves on the street) don't perceive a m4/3 camera like the M10 or a Panasonic GX85 for example, as a huge profit item, although they might still try to snatch it up from you, but its not as appealing as say a FF camera worth thousands. I have to say because of this channel, I went out and bought a (used) m4/3 camera for this purpose and frankly, it's made the experience more enjoyable. (Since I paid very little for the camera, I can enjoy my street photography and not be as worried about who is going to try to steal my expensive camera. If it gets stolen, it sucks, but it's also not thousands of dollars lost -- maybe $200 or so, so I can be less worried about the camera and focus on shooting). Plus when it comes to modern m4/3 cameras (or we'll say ones made in the last 6-7+ years) they have competitive features and specs of their more expensive siblings, like good AF tracking, IBIS and good lens support from multiple mfrs (in fact, lens support for m4/3 is better than some of these newer mirrorless systems from Canon and NIkon, but that's partially because they started from scratch about 4 years ago whereas m4/3 has been around for much longer and is more or less an "open" mount with lots of third party support which makes the overall format and systems that much more beneficial). That being said, I picked up a used Pan GF1 really cheap but would ideally like to get an M10 III or IV at some point (probably used; I prefer the EVF to be honest).

Yeah that is true, having something smaller, less expensive works very well for street. A camera that does not look too serious, invites less trouble! Very good point there.

Great Video! The EM10 is a great little camera, and you can get them on the used market for such a good price! I recently got a Mark 3 model with M.Zuiko 14-42mm and M.Zuiko 40-150mm for $330USD!!! what a price! and then had some more budget so found a Lumix 25mm F1.7 Prime for $75 USD. Picked Up some Filters and other accessory and in total around $485 USD, have an awesome little street kit! I think its pretty easy to find these deals at the moment. love the feel of this camera. Loving my EM-10 iv. With the kit pancake zoom it fits in my 'fanny pack' around my waist and no other combo does. If I can take a small shoulder bag then the 17 and 25 /1.8s are there to suit my mood and the streetscape. They do make you think more about what you are shooting. Any of these combos are better than my photography :) Good video Robin!

I recently "upgraded" my E-M10 Mk I with the E-M5 Mk III. The E-M10 was a bit too small for even my not particularly large hands, so both my E-M10 and E-M5 III have the ECG-1 and ECG-5 grips respectively. And I have the option of removing them if I need either to be smaller and lighter. I will say I prefer the simple tilting screen of the E-M10 to the more complex screen of the E-M5. I also find the built in flash of the E-M10 very convenient, as I almost never use flash except occasionally for fill. I would have bought the E-M10 Mk IV except Olympus does not make an accessory grip for it.

@parthgolhar I have no camera experience to tell you which one you should go for, but for me, the em10 series are perfect, compact, easy to use, and pictures are of good quality. Find a lens to match your style and go for it. I would suggest either kit lens the 14 to 42 or the pro version 12 to 40 f2.8 or f4, as this will give you diversity to experiment with what style you like. Rather than going straight for a telephoto lense or fixed.

Great Video as always Robin! I just want to add that the EM10 Mark 2 adds the electronic shutter which is so helpful in street photography for candit shots as well as portraits as you can use extremely high shutter speed. For me personally the EM10 M2 is the perfect of all the EM10 Series because the electronic shutter is accessible for all modes. unfortunately this was changed for the M3 and M4 where you can use electronic shutter just in P mode. Thanks for the amazing content Jens

I agree with you. For me Olympus has never done better than the 10markii in the omd e-m10 series: the quality of the materials, the functions assigned to the buttons and the tilting screen. With the arrival of the 10 markiii and 10markIV the menus have become restricted and the buttons less customizable, no more direct access to the choice of collimator (you must first click on the right)

They did release an e-m10iiis which enabled electronic shutter in all manual modes. It’s a shame they didn’t just do it as a firmware update for the M3 and I’m surprised it’s not on the M4. Although it’s a very quiet shutter anyway and barely noticeable in street, but admittedly it would be useful for other situations. I believe the M2 also allows for the use of shutter remote cables, but the M3 relies on WiFi. I have the M3 and would prefer the option of a remote cable release over WiFi, but I have other cameras. It’ll be interesting to see what OM Systems deliver to this lineup.

Totally agree. However I upgraded from the em10 ii to the iv. Big mistake. A lot less functions for more money. For example, user pre-sets no longer available, Now have to manually change set up for different type of images instead of one click button. The ability to attach remote control etc. Have to use inbuilt WIFI with phone App. The list goes on. I miss the Mk ii. Have gone through 3 14-42 mm lenses all with the same problem. Having said that I still love the OMD em10. Great results from a small and light Camera.

I have quite a few cameras, arguably "better" than E-M10, but the E-M10 is the one I keep taking out with me when I go walking or hiking. I know you're not supposed to use these in the rain, but I do, I have been for a while, and the camera still works fine. I agree entirely with all you had to say on this topic and it was for this reason I ditched my dslr for the em10 mii. I occasionally use the IiR kit lens , but I also use a 30 and 60 mm for my portraits and walkabout lenses . For wide angle I switch to my phone that has a good 28 mm 1.8 lens that works very well in good light . I travel light with one lens and my phone and carry my camera in a Billingham digital camera bag . The bag , the prime lenses were all gifts and my only outlay was purchase of the camera direct from Olympus , who sold it new at half the launch price . You see, I love a bargain ha ha . I have learned so much from you , Robin , over the years and I chose this camera primarily because it has a tilt screen . I no longer need a pro camera , but I need a camera capable of producing pro quality results and which is not going to break my neck or give me back ache . Thank you once again my friend . Keep up the good work and I hope that another aspiring photographer seeking a mirrorless system discovers your excellent videos .

Pre-MF focus mode makes the EM-5 MKIII a better street camera then the EM-10's or older EM5 models. Pre-MF allows zone focusing with any AF lens including my favorite street lenses: Lumix 14m F.25 and Zuiko 17mm F2.8. The EM5 MKIII also has great phase-detect autofocus whereas the EM10 has contrast-detect. To be fair, I am not sure if PDAF vs CDAF makes much difference in street photography. The weather sealing of the EM5 is comforting. With a non-weather sealed pancake lens, the camera can be used to shield the lens from rain in the few seconds the camera is out of pocket exposed to weather. BTW I enjoy your videos.

6/19/23 I own the OM 10 M2 and find I like using it more than my OM-D 1 or 5 M1. The only issue I have with it is the hand grip should be larger for holding it, I did purchase an after market grip which helps some but can be an issue when changing batteries or memory cards. The photos are top notch even with the kit lenses that meet my needs. The only other issues is that i wish it had like my Sony Bridge camera built in GPS to record where photos were taken so I can got to Google Maps ans pretty accurately determine the exact location od where the photo was taken. Even though my OM-D 10 M2 is an older model even in 2023 I would be hard pressed to echange it for a newer model, unless it were the new OM-1 with the duel cards and AI built in.
