I love this song, and can relate to it on a personal level. I had an ex who broke my heart, then came back as if nothing had happened to try to rekindle the relationship. This song came out right about when my daughter's first marriage ended. Her first husband was cheating on her with his freaking cousin who was married to my son (he's remarried now to a wonderful girl). They had to get a DNA test to make sure my son's daughter wasn't his brother-in-law's baby. On top of that...he was doing heroin. She divorced him and he overdosed, died and was in a coma for 1 month, in and out of prison since. My daughter can't even listen to this song anymore. Poor girl, she's definitely NOT the same person. She was 12 when they first met. Had their first of 3 kids when they were only 16...divorced by the age of 19. He broke her...but 7 years ago, she met her prince charming and married him. She and her kids are all amazingly happy. God is good.

I feel like we've all been with that one person who is so bad for us and toxic and destroys us and when we finally get the strength to walk away.. that's when THEY decide they'll apologize and promise to change and so many of us take them back again and again. I remember when this song came out my bf at the time was definitely cheating. At the very least emotionally cheating. He was telling another girl he loved her and I just couldn't leave. I was so comfortable and scared to be without him.

This was one of the songs that helped wake me up to the emotional abuse in my marriage. I slowly lost piece by piece of myself and didn’t realize it for years. It wasn’t till I was an empty shell before I woke up to what was happening. He would literally build me up only to kick me down over and over.
