Anyone know why they did the blj to bowser there instead of the spiral staircase beforehand like they do in the any%? There's no way its faster there in any scenario, and its been a strategy used for like at least 6 years or so.

@@NovaTheDark I actually just did a rough timing, and in the any% tas they got from the key door to the bits loading zone in 10 second, and in this one it was about 14 seconds. I don't think there's a world that exists where this could possibly be faster specifically because its a 16 star tas.

Simply, as a none runner, why not BLJ through the lobby door instead of going to get bowser key after getting 16th star? Do you have to have a key to get through that door even if you were going super fast during a BLJ?

If you're referring to the door that takes you upstairs then you can't. There's no loading zone behind that door, you need the key to access it. If you try to open the key door from behind it displays the same message if you attempted to open it with no key from the front.

In theory could it be faster to do another star rather than the sub and then do the same skip you use in 0 star to bypass the sub level and enter bowser 2? Is there a rule against that?

Yeah that skip (SBLJ) is banned in the 16 star category. As Simply says in the beginning, 16 star is defined as Any% without SBLJ

@@imswiredm9546 It stands for Side BLJ (and just in case you don't know, BLJ is Backwards Long Jump, the TAS does that quite a lot). It's called Side BLJ because it's done on the stairs opposite the Bowser 2 door. It's the only rule that defines 16 star because it forces people to actually collect 16 stars. Bowser 1 cannot currently be skipped by a human. As Simply says, the technique requires you to travel to Parallel Universes just so Mario can hit the door at the right angle and speed. There's no way a human could pull that off.

I've been told that BLJs aren't about mashing faster, but the way simply explains pausing during them seems to counter that thought process. Can anyone elaborate or is the advice I've received just wrong?

When the TAS is pause-buffering BLJs, it's in a place (like on the drawbridge in LLL or the platforms in VCUtM) where there is a limited amount of time or space (or both) to get the speed it needs. In that instance, being able to press A on every single frame where physics are calculated is very helpful. In those instances, it really is about mashing faster. But for humans, where usually you'll be BLJing up the 50 and 70-star door stairs and maybe SBLJing if you're doing 0 or 1 star, Mario's position is MUCH more important than how fast you're mashing because you have a buffer of several frames before you would lose the speed from a backwards long jump. You might be able to save like half a second with perfect mashing versus much slower mashing. It's just not where the time loss will come from in a run.

@DarkCoreX No. If you press A on the first frame you're counting and include the 15th frame, you can press A 8 times in 15 frames without pause-buffering. The limit is 8 because you need to have a frame where A is released between A presses, else the game thinks that you're just holding down the A button. This takes 15 frames where physics are calculated (I'll call it a "physics frame"), 7 of them without an A press. What pause-buffering gets you is a way to press A on every single physics frame. So you'd press A on frame 1, Start on frame 2, nothing on frame 3, Start on frame 4, and A again on frame 5 to complete the pause buffer. Using this method you can only achieve 3 A presses (a bit more if you average it out) in the same 15 frames. But also, now every single physics frame now has an A press. This can be used to very quickly build up speed when doing BLJs in tight spaces, where those physics frames with A released could cause Mario to move too far and be unable to continue building speed.
