just read cristine's thesis and her little bit for ben in the acknowledgements just warmed my heart ♡ Here it is for anyone who would want to read it! "Benjamin, you have seen me through this challenging time and never ceased to offer your support, be it listening to me ramble on about feminism (sorry), accepting my hours at a time of emotional absence while I was ravenously typing away, or even proof-reading most of my chapters. You have challenged me to be a more critical thinker, and even though neither of us enjoys being ‘wrong’, I believe our debates have served us both well and inevitably improved my understanding of critical theory." there's also a bit for jenny if you want to read it she linked her thesis in the description box!!

I was always so confused as a kid. We have drive thru convenience stores where I live, and they have neon don’t drink and drive signs. I was like, wtf why can’t you drink water while you drive? Mom is totally breaking the rules.
@lisawebb5841
@lisawebb5841 4 жыл бұрын
I remember as a kid and my teacher saying “it’s never to drink and drive” and asking the class why we think people choose to drink. And one kid was like “maybe they had a rough day” and then another kid was like “maybe they were peer pressured!” And I’m sitting there scoffing, like they’re just completely missing the most OBVIOUS answer. So I raise my hand and say “maybe they were just...thirsty???” And the teacher then explained that that’s not the kind of “drink” she was referring to. So that’s the day I learned that “drink” meant alcoholic beverages in that context lol.

Would you guys consider doing an education podcast? Some potential questions: What was it about your majors that drew you to them? Why did you attend Carleton University in particular? What was your favorite class in college? What are some favorite/funny school stories? (Doesn’t have to just be college/university!) What are your thoughts on student debt? Why did Ben leave graduate school? Was it a job opportunity or just not quite a good fit? And Cristine, why did you write your thesis on prisoner self injury?

I'm 27, had long hair my whole life and then 2014. I got liver cancer and 1 month predictions to live. When I started chemotherapy all off my hair fell off and I never got over it. I know that shouldn't be that way but my hair represents security. It seems stupid but I heard the same from many women who lost hair during chemo. Sorry for my bad English grammar, I'm from Croatia. For those in the United States: While some activism is going and protesting in the streets, if you are not able or you feel unequipped/unsafe doing so Organize and participate in coalitions to contact your representatives! Your City Mayor is the one in charge of Police budget You can call or email them, whatever you are most comfortable with! And as a citizen of your city you can DEMAND budget cuts/reallocation of budget and reform. Many cities have been standing in solidarity of a 25% cut -- that may sound like a lot but depending on your city their budget is HUNDREDS of millions to BILLIONS and upwards of ten times larger than housing, medical, or education budget. Mom and Dad are right, to made real change, take real action.
@mars5896

YES THANK YOU FOR THE EMPHASIS. A lot of people don't participate in that part and I always argue "You know why Republicans change their stances over the past few years and hardline side with Trump? Because Trump supporters bug the SHIT out of their reps with calls and emails and town halls" and it's true. The more prominent voices get heard and acted on.

In my language we say "Don't drive after alcohol" so there was no confusion over this one. But somehow when someone dies tragically we say that they "got lost". Literally same verb as when you want to say "my car keys got lost". So when I was a child my mom was telling me about a monument which was build in honour of world war 2 soldiers and she said that they "got lost". Of course I was too small to understand that it was like 50 years prior so I started to go around bushes visibly looking for something and when my mom asked what I was doing I replied that if they "got lost" we need to find them because their parents must be looking for them.
@enenenergp
@enenenergp 4 жыл бұрын
Awww that’s so sweet 🥺 in my language for smtn to ”get lost/to lose smtn” is in certain situations very similar to the word for drowning, weirdly enough. For dying here, if we want to say it politely like ”passed away” we basically say ”slept away” regardless of whether they died while sleeping or not. There’s also other sleep related death vocabulary like ”fell in to the eternal dream” and stuff like that. So I’ve heard of kids being afraid of going to sleep since they’ve been told their grandparent ”slept away” and they think they’re going to disappear / never wake up / be buried in a casket like nana if they go to sleep 😅 so it’s important to properly explain death to kids. Regardless of language really, all languages have euphemisms for dying.

For people with an image-driven memory, using colours and laying out notes in a certain way helps you recall what was on the sheet. You also end up spending more time making those notes and end up memorizing it that way, rather than just rushing or reading through the notes. IDK that how I remember things.
@AlexaFaie

That was the only way I managed my German and French GCSE speaking tests - I colour coded the past, present, and future sections so I'd get it in the right order and did the same for the prompt card we were allowed to take in (that was only allowed to have 5 lines on it of bullet point style notes) so the colour allowed me to just see the entire section of text in my head to read it out. For everything else I was fine with just remembering what I'd read or learned in class. I never managed to take revision notes because I didn't understand the point of writing out stuff that I already had written once before in class. I knew I knew it, didn't see why I needed to waste paper on notes. If it didn't go in the first time I was introduced to it, it wouldn't ever go in. So revision was the most pointless thing in the history of ever to me. So I just didn't bother. Still did fine in the end of year tests (that don't count towards anything other than making sure you're in the correct academic tier for the next year) and so when it came to the actual proper exams in GCSE, A Level, and then university, I didn't bother revising for those either and still got great grades. Only needed it for the speaking tests because it involved having to talk out loud to another person in a performance kind of way and it had to be a natural conversation - they'd ask questions and you had to answer from the speech you'd pre-written which they had a copy of. And I don't do well with having to talk to someone like that without being able to rehearse in my head what I'll be saying. Its hard enough answering in my own language let alone another. Its the whole social aspect of communicating with another person.

i am someone who doesn't feel comfortable going out to protests where the police would inevitably intervene and cause more issues, so a way that i've been showing my support for the movement is by putting signs on my car saying "BLACK LIVES MATTER" on my rear windows. it is heartwarming to see people liking my signs at drive thru's, and more importantly, black people. i was on my way to my therapy appointment and i was at a stoplight, and a black man was crossing the street. he noticed my signs and he mouthed "thank you" and that made me so happy. i think more people should do this!

Thank you. So much. I cried because for so long I felt like we were invisible or a nuisance. Nobody would stand for me when the "security worker" at target was clearly following me because of my skin and my hijab and not because I did something suspicious. My only fault was my skin and my religion. Nobody would stand for me at the airport, in the plane, at the doctor office. We need to feel the love, we need to see who are our allies, so thank you for this it means the world to be seen and heard. Search on YT you can also help financially by watching videos who give their adsens to BLM movement, NAACP etc. Just put the video on mute on your computer, let all the ads play (don't forget to disable ad block please), when the video is done watch a few minutes of another video so YT don't think you are a boot, and come back again, as many times as you can. Speak of it around you please, we need all the help we could get

I also don't want to go to protests (COVID cases are skyrocketing in my city), although I support them. In addition to donating money to organizations that help black people with legal services, and advocate for legal changes related to equal rights/police reforms, I ordered a black lives matter bumper sticker and wristband. I plan to wear that wristband every time I leave my house. I also post frequently on social media about injustices (although it's impossible to keep up with the police abuses of power). While I know that posting on social media alone is not a sufficient role to take toward social change, I do want to spread the word to as many people as will listen. I want to spread the word about white privilege, systemic racism, police brutality, and the role that white people play in the oppression of black people. Especially the white people who aren't racist, but also don't understand how they contribute to the problem. The minds of most racist people won't be changed, but I believe the so far silent majority can make the biggest impact. It is not enough to not be racist. We need to be actively anti-racist.

What is the difference between white pasta and just regular pasta? Is it bleached or something to get it whiter? Only pasta I know of which isn't already white-ish in its regular normal state would be the ones coloured with spinach or tomato or squid ink. Or that vile wholegrain pasta you sometimes find.

That howl is a call for others to come eat of the awesome prey the cat has hunted😸 Gift for the colony... some bring the prey directly to humans, others leave it in the feeding spot (Menchie =in water bowl) or some place where humans will stop frequently (=in shoes). Our old cat would bring mice, lizards and birds with that full-mouth howl, and we would praise and pet her. She would eat them after a bit when we (surprisingly😂) didn't partake, usually she showed us some hunting moves with them before that to teach us poor hunters how to do it😆

TECHNICALLY speaking, in American English they are spelled color, favorite, neighbor, etc... In European English the u is present; colour, favourite, neighbour, etc... Lots of people who live in America though, spell things the European way, it mostly depends on the region in which you were educated, the type of school you went to, and your teacher at the time. I was also taught to spell things with the u, but I had a heavy European influence in my education.

I agree with the fact that you don't have to be a bookworm to be smart, in research you read so many papers for work that for my free time I like to chill with something more visual and on the entertainment side, although I love reading mythology books... and that's it :) PS: I painted my nails rainbow with scatter holo and super glossy taco while listening/watching to this podcast. 🌈

Omg, my cat does that howling thing with her favourite "toy" (a ball of tin foil 🙄) and it gives me a heart attack every time she finds it again. 😂😂

Omg! The drinking and driving story! My parents tell me about when I was little... they had some friends over one night and they all had drinks... then a few days later one of those friends came back over and I was so upset that he had been drinking and driving! I guess I thought that once you drink, you can never drive again 🤣

I love and appreciate how all the screenshots, questions, photos or videos that are referenced are edited it. And all the links in the description! Lots of video podcasts don't do that and I think it's very underrated. Thank you for that effort!!!

I also took the “Don’t Drink and Drive” message very literally when I was little! And 100% embarrassed my dad by panic yelling at him about drinking (water) as he was driving the van. While my grandparents were visiting my family from across the country.
